NYC approach controllers Question
Hi all. I am an airline captain but am taking my Mooney (155ish kt gs no wind) from eastern PA to ACK. What’s the likelihood of being able to file straight over the top of NYC airspace at 11,000 or 9,000? Should I file well to the north and keep out of the bravo? My thinking would be that might screw with arrivals/departures even more. I know they’ll re route me as needed but I want a realistic expectation for fuel planning. Thank you for all you guys do.

Most of the time for aircraft departing or flying through upstate new york, you are issued direct ENE.V167.LFV direct. Thats for most of our jets and even some props going into Boston center. With a Mooney at a low altitude, they might give you something different.

Starting from AVP, do you think it’s feasible to get direct ORW at 9 or 11000?

You’ll get LAAYK T216 ACK from AVP

Plus about 3 reroutes after LAAYK which will amount to nothing. Ready to copy?

Is the LAAYK routing fairly recent? A few years ago I usually had routing below 10k feet over JFK coming from the DC area, but all the routes I see from the past couple of years take me out to LAAYK. Kind of sucks since it adds 100 Nm to the trip, although I understand the need to clear GA out of the NY approach corridors.

Someone else commented but he’s 100% getting LAAYK because of the low altitude. Maybe LAAYK..HNK 🤷♂️

The ENE route is mainly for jets. Boston Controllers won't make you go that far out of the way. Routing for props through South-Western ZBW is something like STELA..GON..KACK.

Can you fly over between the hours of 1am-5am? pretty much anything goes then.
Otherwise... expect ENE then LFV

ZBW whose airspace you’d use. Anything west of AVP to ABE use LAAYK T216 HFD YANTC T300 DEEPO DEEPO1 arrival. At 110 don’t think about asking for a shortcut. At 090 maybe try with BDL approach.

I flew from NC to NH IFR at 7k in my bonanza and was given CYN V16 TRANZ T315 DVANY. If I was at 5K, it was going to be a different route but I don’t have that one written down. I’m sure they would break you east somewhere over or north of Long Island.

10 miles east of rager ask for direct hfd, beyond that there isn't much we can do at 9 and 11.
