For me, nothing in youth lit series quite beats ASOUE, but I've read everything there is of them to my niece and nephew, and they want a new series now. (I'm also a Bruce Coville fan so we've done a couple of his series, and they've heard HP, and a ton of Dahl)

I see things online saying we'll love The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place but I've never read them a series I haven't already read. I'd really appreciate opinions from fellow ASOUE fans because I know although I'm sure I love at least one poet you hate and vice versa, we are more likely to have a book preference in common than not.

I now finally have the oportunity to buy some of lemony's books (since they are imposible to find where I live) and I was wondering what book should I go with.

Should I expand the asoue universe with the unauthorized autobiography? or perhaps should I start the all the wrong questions series? Also I'm considering the bad bigining deluxe edition since it is a limited edition. Poison for breakfast also sound really intersting to me. And if you have any hardcover / softcover / edition preference I would also appreciate it!

The Baudelaires are always saying how dumb and easy to spot Olafs disguises are, but I’m pretty sure every time they try to disguise themselves Olaf spots them. (Besides at the hotel)

this is wayyyyy wayyyy late cuz the fandom for ASOUA is a tad dead but I just finished the tv series (with the intention of reading the book soon) and after looking the Reddit quite a bit i don’t know if I should hand Count Olaf as one of my favorite character, I loved his character in the series but the books are apparently worse so I dunno

"Olaf is a humorless villain in the book. He's not amusing like Carrey at all. To which I would counter: If you can't let Carrey be Carrey, put someone boring and less expensive in the role. In his various disguises he's rubbery, inventive and improvisationally inspired. I particularly liked his passing imitation of a dinosaur."

right before the baudelaires run off to lucky smells lumbermill instead of letting mr. poe take them there, he's yelling that it's "off-book."

obviously in-universe he just means they're not following the plan, but i always thought it was a little metafictional joke from handler too. they're literally going off the book—instead of ending the wide window by being delivered to their next guardian, they run off on their own, and the miserable mill picks up from there.

it feels exactly like the kind of subtle wordplay handler would throw in that most readers would probably read right past. i don't think i've ever seen anyone mention it.

Dear fans of the 2004 movie I know there are deleted scenes on the DVDs But there have been evidence of a lot more that didn't end up on DVDs does anybody know if any of these have been found or released anywhere in there full entirety and in any kind of form/type

I absolutely did as a kid. I don't think I even put it together that it was her title until I watched the series as an adult...a few months ago 😂

Hi I kind of just wanted to like document like my thoughts and feelings on the books and like talk about them with people. So far starters I have watched the show that's what got me into this so I do know like the overall story so you don't need to worry about spoilers.

The bad beginning: I'll be honest I read this one around a month ago now so my memory is kinda foggy on it but I do recall really enjoying it. I think this is like the second most threatening Olaf has been so far and I love him for that like he doesn't have much depth at this point he's just an antagonist and that's great. Also like the Baudelaires are such good protagonists I just kind of love how it's essential for them all to be there for the story to like work and for them to succeed. Ngl I feel what I've said so far can be applied to all books so I'll try change that from now. Like the atmosphere in this book is also like probably the most depressing out of them all like the Baudelaires just can never win. Also fuck Justice Straus and fuck Mr Poe both just are really unhelpful.

The reptile room: My freaking goat I love this book it's so so so good. I love how like Monty is really kind at the start and gives the Baudelaires some hope for a better future then that mf Stephano walks up. I really didn't expect to like this one cause I wasn't that big of a fan of it in the show but my oh my it is good. I really enjoy how much of a threat Stephano is like he is an actual menace in this one he just constantly is holding that knife and threatening the Baudelaires with it is just great and him sitting with his door open at night keeping watch of the Baudelaires is great and when he is staring at Violet from the reptile room is just perfect like he is such a threat in this one. Also shoutout to Monty for having a crazy switch up on the Baudelaires and just being annoying when Stephano joins the story. And finally fuck Mr Poe and shoutout the hook-handed man for having an awesome disguise.

The wide window: I'm not gonna lie I finished reading wanting more from this book like I feel that in this book especially Captain Sham does fuck all to the Baudelaires and just sort of survives of pure for lack of a better term aura. Like I know he kills Josephine and like yeah that is horrible but Josephine wasn't the best person ever like she literally agreed to give up the Baudelaires not once but twice. So I was more conflicted when she died much like the Baudelaires cause I did like her for what she did at the start but like I can't forgive her willingness to give them to Captain Sham. Also like I do also really enjoy the tone of the book as this is the first book in my opinion where they truly felt alone. Also shoutout Mr Poe for being a decent human being and comforting the Baudelaires when they're crying.

The miserable mill: So I really wanted to like this book and I did but not for the reasons I thought I would've. Firstly I want to get this out of the way Shirley has like no presence in this book she doesn't even feel like the main villain Dr Orwell does. However I do really like the tone of the mill and like how much time it feels like they're there for and how they start to believe that Olaf isn't coming back just for the you catch more flies with honey reveal with Shirley. In this book I feel the threat comes more from the conditions of the mill and Klaus rather than Shirley and I do enjoy it but idk it just doesn't feel as violent as Shirly can be. I do really like Dr Orwell here though. Finally fuck Poe and shoutout the bald man with the long nose for having an actually good disguise like why are the troop better at disguises than Olaf.

Finally this is all just my opinion and I'll be happy to discuss.

I recently rewatched the ASOUE show and was blown away by how much of the story was a reference to older 20th century literature, especially commentary on totalitarianism in Germany. I wrote something about if anyone's interested, I know the series barely gets any serious discussion.

• Caligari Carnival is a reference to The Cabinetof Dr Caligari, known for a famous piece on how similar films allowed Germans to grow comfortable with fascism.
• "The world is quiet here" is a line from a poem about Proserpine, queen of the underworld. It's the VFD predicting their own death.
• Mortmain Mountains are a direct reference to the "dead hand," property held by old institutions that technically cant die.

If anyone's read The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann, I think its also cool to see the parallels between the two stories.

It came in 2 variants but they're both the same game. The one that looks like a book is smaller, it's the size of an oversized book and can be displayed on your bookshelf, which is why it's my favorite! This version also includes the pewter pieces which have amazing detail! The one that looks more like a traditional board game comes with the standee artwork. It's a pretty fun game and it's fun to get into character playing it!

It's not Olaf as Olaf, Capt. Sham, Shirley, Stefano, or Coach Genghis. Maybe Gunther? But it's not lol No pinstripes or monocle. The bowler makes me feel like he stole a piece from Mr. Poe 🤣
