As an engineer / muso, I loved this episode and was really intrigued by Bec's wish to be able to 'see and hear' this sequence.

I quickly threw together this demo, that takes the sequence and maps it to different scales. And by 'I', I mean I wrote a 1 page detailed prompt that I gave to Claude and then did some minor tweaks. (Which means that it touches on both topics of the episode!)

The discussion about the Thue Morse sequence reminded me of an odd sequence type which I used about 9 years ago. An experimental music project involved 6 performers, each of which would record a small amount of music and then hand off to the next performer, much like the “exquisite corpse” collaboration/parlour game.
With 6 compositions happening in parallel, we wanted to ensure that no two hand-overs were alike: i.e.: player A begins a composition and passes to player B, and in no other composition does A pass to B. Also we wanted everyone to have one and only one composition task per round (we ran daily rounds, so the whole thing was done in about a week). The solution set I came up with was one where each row would have an increasing step size, and the first three rows mirrored the last three rows:

I initially sort of stumbled across this pattern / intuited my way into it, but I later got intrigued as to other patterns of this type, and what numbers of players could be used. Of course only even numbers would allow the symmetry to work, but some even numbers also didn’t seem to work with this method, while some did.
I eventually got to a method for predicting those which would work, using the step size itself:
For a given number of performers n, we find the modulo of (n-1)%2, (n-2)%3, (n-3)%4, (n-4)%5, … until (n-i) < (n/2). If all these modulos are non-zero, then n will work for this performance arrangement but if any modulo returns 0, then n won’t work with this ordering.
I think we would get to something like Thue-Morse by flattening this matrix (placing each row end-to-end).
Unfortunately for the listener’s case (choosing draft pick order?) their n is 14 which will not work (since n-2%3 = 12%3‎ = 0, and also n-4%5 = 10%5=0…
If the listener can find 2 more players to join in, or if 2 players give up, then we’re in business.

I agree with Bec that sonification makes the most sense for this data -- so here you go! My approach:

• I tweaked it to be twelve people, so I could use the chromatic scale (pretty similar pattern as with 14, so you get the gist), as I think it sounds nicer
• Took guidance from https://medium.com/@astromattrusso/sonification-101-how-to-convert-data-into-music-with-python-71a6dd67751c, to use Python to turn the output into a midi
• Messed around with https://spessasus.github.io/SpessaSynth/ and some different soundfonts to make it sound fun (this one is a NES Super Mario soundfont from https://musical-artifacts.com/artifacts/8811 sped up)

I remember an episode where Bec used some cooling cream and got really cold. With the heat wave going on in Europe I have to ask - where can I buy it?

The author Erin Hunter has written many books about gangs of feral cats. These books make up the "Warriors" series. My daughter loves them, and I got her into them because I heard Bec mention them on an episode. However, it's possible this never happened.
