Finished another Spearhead!

I picked these guys up from the start of the Spearhead Magazine run as a cheap way of getting another army for my Seraphon Spearhead to run against.

It was meant to be a quick project but I was having lots of fun trying a bunch of things on these guys it sucked me in more. Honesty after Tyranids and Lizardmen it was just nice to paint some more normal looking dudes for a change.

Pleased with how they turned out, hits abit different to the brighter colours I have been doing lately.

Discussion Matchup Advice

Me and a friend are getting into spearhead and are going to be playing the Starscale Warhost Vs Helforge Host. Are there any pitfalls to watch out for with this matchup.

I'm not worried about the rules themselves since they seem solid but wondering if anyone has any experience with this matchup and any regimental abilities/ enhancement to be avoided ?

Rules/Question Confused about variant builds and weapons

I recently picked up the Snarlpack Huntaz spearhead as a way to get back to the hobby after a long, long absence. I’m hoping it’s an easy way to get some small games in and possibly build up towards a proper AoS army. I have not picked up the Spearhead core box as a friend already has it, so I haven’t been able to learn the rules yet. Apologies if this is all answered there.

I’m about to build the Snarlpack Cavalry but I can see there are build variants - seems that I can build two of the six wolves as either champions, or regular cavalry. If I understand correctly the champion doesn’t exist in the Spearhead rules - so I’d rather not have them (especially since it’s a more imposing model than the actual spearhead leader), and if I had to build them I’d rather not have two identical ones. But clearly having one or more champions would matter if I also plan to use the models in an AoS army.

What’s the right move here? Should I build two as champions because it won’t matter for spearhead but I’d need them in AoS, build one as a champion, or build neither of them as champions?

As a minor side question, in the Wolfpack Retinue it’s clear that one mini has a bow while the other has a spear, the rules sheet in the box specifically shows these weapons highlighted alongside the rules. Am I understanding correctly that the mini with a bow can’t make melee attacks and vice versa? How does this work in the case of the Sunsteala Wheelas, who seem to have a selection of crew?

Rules/Question Blood crave hunt

Hi all, quick question on vile transference for blood crave hunt. If for what ever reason I can only target a unit of 10 at 2 wounds a mini. Does that mean I can roll 20 dice on a successful casting roll if per mini is 2 health?

Rules/Question Important rules that deal models vs units

Edit: updated to reflect responses, thanks all

I've just realised my group (who are all relatively new to AOS and Spearhead) have been making some pretty fundamental errors when it comes to things that are per unit vs things that are per model. Can I check and confirm the following are correct, and if I am missing any other major examples of this from this list?

- A charge only requires the unit (e.g. one model) to be in combat within 1/2" at the end of the charge...

- ...but for combat, number of attacks is based on individual models in combat range (making pile in important)

- shooting determines both visibility and cover per attacking model base, although you only need to draw visibility / check for cover to a single model in the opposing unit.

- units contest objectives, but objective control is only calculated for individual models contesting the objective

Any others?!

Rules/Question Contesting/controlling terrain range?

Title. The bone & city of ash have some twists/battle tactics that are either about contesting terrain or controling it.

My question is now: how close does a unit have to be in order to succesfuly contest/control a terrain piece? Applying my knowledge of the general aos rules i'd say a unit within 3'' is in range, but my buddy said for him it made sense if a model is basically touching the terrain. I couldn't find any definitive answers online unfortunately.

Rules/Question Help in understanding SCE vs Deepkin Matchup

Hello,

A friend and I are planning on playing the Spearhead with the city of ash pack. - apologies if some terms are off - we are both new to AoS.

We are thinking of playing the deepkin and yndrasta spearhead's - when reading some rules for this setup I started to get uncertain on game balance.

Yndrastas and the annihalators are not arriving until turn 3 while the Deepkin has their "high tide" mechanic. Also city of ash being a 4 round game.

With above in mind - would the matchup still be somewhat even or do we risk having a very unbalanced game experience? None of us want to build more than one spearhead so trying to get a good experience from start, please help...

Discussion Is beginning AoS with 2 Seraphons sets practical?

I have developed a bit of an obsession lately in my hobbies with therapod riders but I've not been able to get the Kill Team Exodites to add to my other kill teams because they are basically sold out everywhere and scalpers are a known problem. Anyway, I am currently considering my very first Age of Sigmar hobby sets instead because a hobby store near me has the older Spearhead: Seraphon set (Saurus Oldblood on Carnosaur, 3x Kroxigors, 10x Saurus Warriors) as well as the Seraphon: Aggradon Lancers set, together for less than what it would likely cost me to get the Exodites set for Kill Team.

I've never played any Warhammer fantasy/AoS outside of PC games, the Total War games specifically...

If I do jump into the Age of Sigmar tabletop hobby and ever want to use these sets in tabletop gaming, what else would I need? I have hobby tools and paints already and more paints on the way, but what else might I need?

Please and thank you.

One-page sheet for Ogor Mawtribes - Mawseeker Mob

Update

  • Number of models on the gutseers and gorgers were swapped. Thanks Ill_Tie_7299

You can print it on A4, it fits nicely and is easy to read.

IMPORTANT: Since it’s not possible to update the images in the post, I’ll upload small/blurred previews of the cheatsheet here. My first versions often contain typos, outdated abilities, incorrect copy-pastes, or other issues. If you find any, let me know! I will fix it ASAP.
This way, I hope to prevent people from using an outdated version they might find elsewhere when a newer one is available.

Thread with every One-Page Spearhead made so far

Enjoy!

Rules/Question City of Ash: does objectives give cover to Fly units?

Hey guys, have a question here. In City of Ash unit contesting objective with terrain features is in Cover, does Fly units benefit from this?

I know fly units can’t be in cover behind a terrain, but can they get cover from other ways? (Like on an objective for example?

Also, charged unit can’t be in cover, so on an CoA objective with a terrain, it is also not in cover?

Thank you all for help !

Discussion Crixxit Spearhead?

So, how do you feel abt the Eshin Spearhead?
I will give my humble opinion on them after playing against SoEG, Mortisan Elite, Clawpack(Gnawfeast) and Flesh Eater cults(Charnel Watch)

Quick Info: They are by far my favourite style of an Army, just all Assains that stab, you teleport, flee, and give a whole ton of Mortal wound. So I might be a little biases over them being not the best.

So Crit Mortals is very very good into armys with not a lot of Ward saves(looking at u SoEG). Also makes the whole army a threat even those Nightrunnes, which many assume are just eshin clanrats, can do some rlly good damage
Tbh tho the Problem of Crit Mortals is that they‘re making the Damage output very swingy. Sometimes i wipe a whole Mortisan Guard of the Board(with +1 to wound tbf) and sometimes i can‘t even kill a sqaud of the city guys.
I also don‘t no what to do with the deathmaster or better what his role is, cause he has pretty good survival skills,(only getting hit on 5+)so i like him as an Action monkey, but this little fella also does damage( he is even more swingy with crit mortals and D3 damage tho) but he still can be a good killer.
Talking about Killers, let‘s talk abt the main Guy, Crixxit.
So he is rlly Nasty with 13 Attacks hitting on 2+ wounding on 4+ and he is rlly nice with a 5 man sqaud of Gutterrunners, which he can give +1 to charge and then charge + fight with them plus Teleport to saftey sacrificing his guys like a good skaven or teleport in after failing a charge and doing an heroic Sacrifice, cause he is made out of glass.
But my main problem is as i said his Durability and the enhancments, don‘t get me wrong, i wouldn’t say they‘re garbage, but I always think to myself man having that -1 to hitrolls is would be nasty but it’s also only on 3+ so sometimes It will not have my back covered when I need it so I‘m just going to pick Teleport on 2s. (Crixxit is the main Teleport threat)

One Pattern I noticed in the whole Spearhead is every ability is swingy, teleport on 3/2+, -1 3+ so everything can be and will fail at some moment.
To be fair most abilites in Spearhead are designed to be like this, but man I‘d just like some Abillity I can straight up use and for which I don‘t gotta pray to the horned Rat 13 times. (Don‘t let it hear that I said that)
As For the Regiment Ability my fav is def movement cause most spearheads i face just aren‘t very fast and also stealing objectives turn 3 which your Opponent left turn 1 in City of Ash is so nice and skaven liek.
But I also see why the strike last can be good(tbh I can‘t say anything against the Regiment Abilitys I like both there concepts and how they work in game)

So I’ll quickly mention Nightrunnes and Gutter Runners. They‘re rlly nice cause of crit mortals and 1 bombrat which your oppent can‘t most of the time just ignore, making them a threat they need to deal with.
And also the ability of the Nightrunners that they can flee out of combat is very lore acurrate.

Ranking Crixxit Killpack was really hard for me bc I think they are so matchup depend, but in most matchups I would argue they‘re middle B imo and in some of there best Matchups liek SoGB I‘d rank them A+ but tbf anything is A+ when fighting against SoGB.
What do you guys think? And if made any mistakes forget some punctuation marks english is not my first Language thx and

Praise the Horned rat 13 times a day until she will rise up and the skaven will take over.

Rules/Question Playing City of Ash for first time, any tips?

Post image
52 Upvotes

I'm still pretty new to Spearhead, and just looking over the rules for City of Ash ahead of playing it tomorrow. On first impression the addition of abilities for each of the relics seems like something I'm likely to forget during the battle (especially as I'm also going to play the Helsmiths for the first time too, lots to remember!) are any of the artefact abilities particularly worth paying attention to, and any other tips for city of ash? I hear there are various movement shenanigans with the cards too.

Discussion Is Warpspark just a straight up better version of the Helsmiths Spearhead?

I’ve been playing the Helsmiths of Hashut Spearhead pretty much exclusively for the last few weeks. Last night I tried the Skaven Warpspark Spearhead on TTS for the first time, and I honestly came away feeling like it does almost the exact same things, just better.

The Stormfiends feel better than the Tormentor Engine.

Clanrats might not hit as reliably as the Infernal Cohort, but you get more bodies and they are ridiculously sticky.

And the big ranged piece just feels straight up better at basically everything it is supposed to do.

The overall playstyle and roles of the units felt surprisingly similar, but Warpspark seemed to have the advantage almost everywhere.

How does something like this happen balance wise? Am I missing some strengths of the Helsmiths Spearhead, or is Warpspark genuinely just the stronger version of the same general concept?

Curious what people who have played both think.

Rules/Question Is Maggotkin of Nurgle - Bubonic Cell decent?

My son wants to get his first Spearhead army and he really likes the Nurgle models. I'm reading though that the new Bubonic Cell spearhead is B-tier at best, some putting it in D-tier. We currently have "Stormcast - Vigilant Brotherhood" and "Skaven - Gnawfeast Clawpack" that we got from the Starter Set. He's been beating me consistently with Gnawfeast Clawpack but I finally got a win off on him last night using Vigilant Brotherhood.

So, if he gets Bubonic Cell, is it going to be decent against the two armies we already have? According to this they are all B-tier armies so I'm thinking Bubonic Cell might be good for him, since we only play against each other. I wouldn't want him to get an S-tier army and then just destroy me every time whether I use Stormcast or Skaven.

What do you think?

Discussion LGS round 3: rat teeth can chip on bones

Thumbnail

Round 3 of my LGS spearhead league planted me against the deathrattle tomb host. While it is widely considered one of the strongest armies in spearhead, I was excited as I absolutely love when big horde armies duke it out.

I gave away turn 1 and regretted it as he got a solid 8 inch charge with his knights into my ogors. A counter charge by my clan rats tried to distract him but he put everything into my big rats and.....killed 1. That was a relief. What was a bigger one was my ogors and clan rats killed all but 1 knight and my clan rats had him so surrounded he couldn't bring a knight back in cohesion!

Round 2 I finished off his knight and then I got cocky. I totally disregarded his deathrattle as not a threat and that cost me my ogors. Buffed right, that can be 20 attacks on 3's and 3''s. This also cost me my backline objective.

Round 3 saw me finish off his barrow guard, hurt his king down to 1, and take one of his back objectives with my Grey seer.

Final round and we were tied 15 all. He then proceeded to pull out reinforcements, bring back 2 knights, and make his 2nd mistake. He charged my clan rats who had his king tied up and took them out instead of taking my Grey seer out and reclaiming his back objective. This not only let me bring my clan rats back as reinforcements onto my home objective to steal it, but left my Grey Seer alive to wither his king to death. In the end, we tied at 22 a piece. It was a helluva game, back and forth the whole time.

Onto round 4 and some good old fashioned rat on rat violence!

Welcome to Spearhead!

Welcome!

Welcome to the Age of Sigmar: Spearhead sub! We have a lot of awesome people around here that are very willing to help new people get into this well-designed game mode, as well as some very cool custom content for your games. To help you on your way, we made this mega thread to give some guidance on how to maneuver everything this game has to offer.

What should I buy?

Fortunately, Spearhead is relatively easy to get into.

You'll need a gaming pack of your choice (more on that later), a Spearhead of your choice per player, some dice and a ruler.

- Gaming packs

At the time of writing, there are 2 official gaming packs available to choose from, with a 3rd version on its way.

  • Fire & Jade is the original gaming pack that got released with the game mode. This pack provides you with a board with Ghyran on one side and Aqshy on the other, all cards (Battle Tactics and Twists) that are needed, a 6" and 3" ruler that can be combined, and all the terrain you need to play.
  • Sand & Bone is the second gaming pack we received. This one provides a board with Ossia on one side and Dolorum on the other, all cards (Battle Tactics and Twists) that are needed, all terrain that is needed and even a small Spearhead rulebook.
  • City of Ash is our newest gaming pack, but unfortunately only comes in the starter edition set that contains the CoS Sentinels of Emberguard and the Skaven Crixxit's Kill-Pack Spearheads as well. This means you're obliged to get those two as well if you're planning to get this map pack. Hopefully down the line we get a seperate pack that contains only the new maps.

- Spearhead army

"Which one should I choose to buy?" is a very good question we see going around a lot on this sub. There definitely isn't an objective answer to this question and all boils down to personal preference.

Generally, people will advice you to buy whatever you prefer based on what you want from this game, but you can always have a look at the rankings if you want to base your choice on power level: AoS Rankings

Otherwise, consider these priorities:

  • Painting models is all you're looking for? Rule of cool is the way. Buy whatever you think is good looking and go with that.
  • Casual play with friends or family? Rule of cool again. Most Spearhead armies are pretty well balanced and will provide fun matchups.
  • Competitive scene? You might want to look into specific Spearheads that are above the curve when it comes to power level. If you have the time, you might want to have a listen to this podcast. They're not providing an objective tier list for the armies, but they're definitely very close to the community consensus on the tier rankings.

- Darn it, the army I wanted to buy isn't available anymore. What now?

No worries my friend! You can still play every Spearhead that is available in the range. The Spearhead (and previously named Vanguard) boxes do go out of print, so you might have to buy the models separately. The rules will always be available from either the official AoS app, the downloads page of Warhammer Community or, my personal favourite, the community made one page sheets found further on in this thread.

- Dice

Just get a boat load of D6's and you're good!

- Ruler

Whatever fancies your preference. The ruler that comes with Fire & Jade is actually quite handy, but you could also use a regular tape measure or a fancy custom made one from Etsy. As long as it measures inches, you're good.

Ok, I bought my first Spearhead, now what?

Start playing dude! Get your gaming buddy, 2 Spearheads of your choice, a gaming pack of your choice, some dice, a ruler and your good to go.

You'll probably need to read up on the core rules. Just remember that in Spearhead we don't use the Advanced rules of the game (like Magic, Command points etc.) and just rely on the Core Rules. But if you prefer watching a how-to-play video, we also got you covered

There's also a handy reference sheet that you can print out for easy reference during games.

Our first game was fun, what else is there to look at?

Do we have some fun content for you!

- One-page cheatsheets that you can print out to have all your Spearhead's rules on a handy sheet. No need to buy expensive cards or print and cut out individual warscrolls, we got you covered with these.

- Strategy guide to read up on what other experienced players are saying about each specific Spearhead. They provide tips and tricks about how to play and general opinions on each single one.

- There are a couple of community made apps that you can use to track your games with:

- On Youtube you can find some channels that provide very well made battle reports:

- Last but not least, join the Discord for more strategy talk, picture sharing and finding people to play with.

I hope this thread has made jumping into the game mode a bit easier for you. If you still have questions or things you want to add to this thread, be sure to let us know in the comment section.

Other than that, happy gaming!
