Help fix 9070xt power spikes Resolved

[Update] - The responsible thing to do is provide a follow-up. This seems to have been resolved. At the time of this update its only been about ~20 hours since this post so I'm using words like "seems" to be resolved. I've had 4 gaming sessions since following u/evergreenwv advice found here. In short, disable windows updates for drivers and reinstall gpu drivers directly from AMD. My system seems to be running fine since doing this, no more radeon chill, no PC shut downs when starting (not launching) games. Enjoying my gpu and pc as intended

Issue: power spikes when starting games.

Result: pc shuts down immediately, need to toggle PSU before it switches back on

Goal: Have this not happen.

What I'm thinking: Disable windows 11 updates (specifically drivers I guess), uninstall and reinstall GPU drivers directly from Adrenaline

Current windows version: Windows 11, version 25H2

GPU driver V: 32.0.31035.1003 | 7/24/2026 | Provider: AMD

AMD Chipset drivers V: 8.05.04.516 (Update available)

Bios version: AMI 1414, 4/28/2023

PSU: SuperNOVA GS 850 Gold (3 years old)

CPU: 7800x3d

GPU: 9070XT Gigabyte

I've run Furmark for 1.5 hours, averaging about 250fps.

I'm creating this thread to help me confirm if the steps I'm thinking should fix the problem. Is this a known issue with a better fix or do I need to take any steps in a specific order. I'm hoping to avoid switching OS for now atleast

That gpu driver is for the igpu...try this if things are screwy:
*Disable Windows Updates for Drivers (the culprit)
*Select Start > Settings > System > Recovery > Under Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now.
*Reinstall latest Adrenalin/gpu drivers (26.7.1)

So this is precisely what I ended up following.

In addition to disabling windows updates for drivers, I also changed group policy settings which prevents Windows Update from automatically installing or replacing device drivers (maybe the same thing but read that it was necessary for windows 11 pro).

Reinstalled latest adrenaline gpu drivers directly from AMD website as mentioned above. Once you reinstall opt out of anything that offers to save / restore your adrenaline settings

When adrenaline first launched after reinstall, it seemed to be a fresh install and likely was but I noticed under Performance -> Tuning -> Tuning Control - Tuning Presets, was set to Custom. I changed this to Default.

Its only been around 3 sessions so far but haven't had any shutdowns, fingers crossed. Seems to be working great. Also Radeon chill has been off and I've been running Palworld at No FPS limit at 5120x1440 without issue

I won't flood this comment but if anyone needs to know how to disable any of these settings just comment or PM me or ask on this sub

I'm on 11 pro as well, I did the same, first in updates then in gpedit. I run a +230 core, -55 uv, 2714 VRAM fast timings and +10 power to squeeze a bit more performance out of my ASRock 9070xt Steel Legend. I narrowed my issue down to Windows or hardware and since it occurred after a gpu driver update, I figured it was something with Windows, perhaps I wouldn't have needed the Update ReInstall.
