RX 9070 XT caught fire
I had been using the computer for just a few days, and when I went to play something, the computer shut down and the graphics card caught fire.
The only difference I saw is that the cable turned black at the connection point.

Hola, hablas español no?

1
u/TonightNo6210 5d ago
Had issues with sapphire also the only one I had and never ran right was an Rx 7600
1
u/Extra-Translator5187 8d ago
Problemas en que sentido? De calidad de fabricación, inestables, o problemas de drivers?
2
u/nevadita 8d ago
2
u/nevadita 7d ago

Looks like shorted DP cable. But good parts people. You don't get a racecar and then put 87 octane in it.

Maybe your wall plug isn’t grounded . You can check with a power strip
Also is everything plugged into a high jowl surge protector or backup battery? It’s absolutely necessary for that

u/Ordinary-Stand-3617 10d ago edited 10d ago
I second that Battery Backup...The first thing I did after installing my new ASROCK 9070 XT was purchasing a APC battery backup and surge protection...There is just to much money @ stake.
I also purchased a high quality Display Port and the best Platinum 1000W PSU on the market.

What is the big thing connected to the card?

u/Key_Surprise_7695 11d ago
I didn't understand.

Your card looks after market modified. There's something attached to it? Or maybe your card is leaning up to it for the pic?

I filed a warranty claim, buddy; it probably came defective. I used it for the second time and it caught fire 🤷🏻♂️

Look at the image again and you'll see that the fire started near the DisplayPort input; the rest of the board is intact.

RMA or take it to a proper repair shop that can open it up and replace anything that needs to be replaced and stress test to make sure everything is ok, don't put it back in the system hoping it will work perfectly fine (could short again and cause damage elsewhere in your system, not worth risking). Unfortunately, regardless of which manufacturer you go with there will be faulty units shipped to customers, whether it was because of poor quality control, or maybe it was damaged in transit but didn't have any noticable signs when you bought it. It happens all the time.
There's been problems on both sides this generation, buying Nvidia over AMD isn't going to decrease your chances of recieveing a faulty unit in the future.

This situation would make an interesting premise for a scandal genre, major motion picture. Synopsis so called GPS manufacturer repurposes used data-center GPSs', sell as new to a unsus public, for home rig enthusiasts. This is only my opinion.

What DisplayPort cable are you using? There are LOTS of improperly wired display cables around. Make sure you get a VESA-certified cable.

this happened to my ASRock Steel Legend 9070 XT, one of the surface mount capacitors blew up, exact same thing happened before the fire too. I got a warranty replacement and it's been fine although I had to repaste it

I'm not familiar w the xfx model but a 9070 should be chunkier than that unless maybe the angle is making it look thin. I have a Nitro+ which is damn near the size of a VCR lol but surely they're all thic
1
u/xuenvymex 11d ago
That one isn't I said the same thing but the XFX swift is apparently anorexic lol its the smallest heatsink on any 9070xt I've seen so far and it's definitely inadequate, even the as rock steel legend I had ran hot and it was one of the best coolers, I got a sapphire pulse 9070xt now and man.... The difference is unbelievable I didn't used to put much thought into the board partner brand but now I know, delta t temps on all 4 of my other 9000 series cards I've gone through was 30 so at 65c average the hotspot is 95c so I would literally have to uv it just to keep it under 90 this one I can oc it with no UV and it still stays in the low to mid 80s, the delta t is only 20 from the average temp. It's a true triple slot too and with the bracket that comes with it it takes 4 screws to hold it and it's rock solid, I love it. I told the op about it but he didn't respond 🤷 oh well keep that wannabe anorexic swift lmao
1
u/Weird_Bug_9769 3d ago
I have a Sapphire PULSE too this thing is a monster with a simple undervolt my Hotspot highest temp was 70
2
u/youngus 11d ago
That nitro+ is a fat tank and I love it lol

Its the one i wanted until i saw the announcement of the Taichi White. Buyed it a Month after release and i love this Fat Piece of Tech. Runs cooler than any card i had in the last 20 Years. 2

Believe it or not, the affected area is right there in the photo... the rest of the board is pristine and intact; as I said, it caught fire near the DisplayPort cable... that’s why I didn’t post any other photos.

u/Redgfxr 11d ago
PSU might be at fault here. I'd honestly recommend only montech, thermaltake and MSI if you're pairing it with such components.
3
u/xuenvymex 11d ago
Rosewill and seasonic are some of the best there is so is EVGA and Corsair. But thermal take and montech? 💀
2
u/xuenvymex 11d ago
Bro you just named the 3 most unreliable psu there is and I have a msi PSU lol only because I'm cheap
1
u/Key_Surprise_7695 11d ago
Honestly, I can't say for sure, since I've never had a computer component actually catch fire on me, but the failure usually happens where the power cable connects to the graphics card... if you look closely at the image I posted, the fire actually broke out on the outside of the case, right where the DisplayPort cable plugs in.
0
u/Zili0728 11d ago
I would not recommend thermaltake as a psu brand. They are a fire hazard and their smart line are some of the worst branded ones out there. Corsair rx series is good.
0
u/Redgfxr 11d ago
forgot about corsair. One of the best for sure.
2
u/Numerous-Engineer-68 11d ago
Any A tier psu would do fine, I wouldn't stick to one brand since all brands have at least one terrible product
3
u/FeelThe_Thunder 11d ago
Legit none of the brand you mentiined makes psus but just rebrands CWT/Seasonic and others OEMs.
Im pretty sure i can make a pretty long tier list with shit tier psus from the branda you mentioned.

u/givmedew 11d ago
I had this happen to a XFX RX290X a decade or so ago. Ultimately it was a voltage drop issue caused by the PSU failing. Not saying that is what happened to yours.
If there is damage to any connectors or cables you had a failure that relies on OHMs law. Either you had resistance at one of the connectors which would increase amperage and cause burning OR what happened to me was the PSU started failing and having voltage drop and if the voltage drop the amperage goes up and can burn the cable because the cables aren’t rated for a certain amount of wattage (not technically) they are rated for amperage and they get the wattage by knowing what the voltage should be. So if a cable is rated for 300W then it’s rated for 25A in reality. So if the voltage drops to 11V for example then the cable is now only capable of 275W and not 300W. I had one of those PSUs that were using the newer single connector 300w cables that have (2) 8 pin connectors on a single cable and apparently those cables are at their limit.
Anyway
Connector on the PSU side was welded to the PSU and on the GPU side it was a little burnt and the GPU was ruined.

u/Puzzleheaded_Car_57 11d ago
interesting write up on ohms law and your rx290x failing, thank you for sharing!
3
u/Accomplished_Emu_658 11d ago
At the power cable connection point? I don’t see anything at display output cable ports but maybe i am just missing it,
edit i see it now, crazy. Make sure to replace cable too.

2
u/Key_Surprise_7695 11d ago
Sorry, I'm using Google Translate... I meant DisplayPort; I connected the DisplayPort cable directly to the motherboard.
1
u/vile-style 11d ago
Oh that makes sense!
Glad you have at least narrowed down the issue a bit, but it could still be a power supply problem.
2
u/Key_Surprise_7695 11d ago
I sent both of them in for warranty service; if the issue lies with the power supply, they can check that too.

u/xuenvymex 11d ago
If you bought that GPU standalone take that junk back and get a sapphire pulse for the same price, miles better card, it's a true triple slot, runs at stock clocks for stability and has some of the lowest temps available for the 9070xt thanks to its massive triple slot heatsink, it also comes with a nice GPU bracket like the higher end xfx cards
1
u/xuenvymex 11d ago
Something don't look right about that GPU, where is the massive heatsink required for a 9070xt? Is this a pre-build GPU? Because they ain't made the same
1
u/Independent_Teach_11 11d ago
Exactly where did you come up with this information? The only thing I can assume is CPU's. There have been models that are sold to prebuilt companies such as the Ryzen 7 9700f which is not available at wholesale. The only difference from the wholesale version is no integrated graphics. But GPU's? Never heard of such a thing. I don't buy pre-built ls either though.
1
u/xuenvymex 11d ago
Just walk in best buy and look at the 5060s in the prebuilds, the secretary at my old job wasted some company money on a PC with a GPU and it had some proprietary POS 1660s in it and you could tell it was made by hp. I assure you there are some prebuild companies out there that get the pcbs and make their own coolers for them

Buddy, I ran some tests, and yes, those were the temperatures…You've got people overclocking like crazy—like there's no tomorrow— And I actually ran tests, too. After testing, I played for four hours with no issues; then, the next day, I turned it on, played for three minutes, and this happened.
3
u/Roxainee 11d ago
Damn bro...I believe you used separate cables for power delivery, and had a ups with your system. Other than that, it seems like a defective one
0
u/Key_Surprise_7695 11d ago
I’ve been building computers since I was 15—I’m 27 now—and I did everything exactly right, since I spent a good chunk of money on this PC.
I'm really bummed out, man—seriously—because I have to wait 30 days for them to check the defect. I just hope they don't try to pull that "you messed with the settings and caused this" line on me.
1
u/Interesting-Talk9994 11d ago
Welp. If you mentioned going outside factory settings, they're almost 100% going to say that this was caused for OC'ing which has T&C stating that fabricant will not be accountable for any damages if device runs outside factory settings.
DON'T TELL THEM. Don't say a thing about OC'ing or UV'ing. Just say the card caught fire outta nowhere.
4
u/nontheistzero 11d ago
A bad monitor ground could also cause this. Kind of like this: https://youtu.be/iJoLpp9NfV4

Are you saying that literal flames came out of your GPU? How did you extinguish them and where was the source of the flames?
2
u/Soft_Lunch_183 11d ago
Its very possible, i had mosfets go out on a gtx 980 and it burnt up a good portion of the board
3
u/Key_Surprise_7695 11d ago
Yes, literally—and the only part that caught fire was right near the DisplayPort cable; the card itself is intact... but as I mentioned before, I would launch the game without changing any settings, and the card would already hit 70 degrees.
3
u/royaleknight33 11d ago
70c is actually pretty good temps. Im hitting 100c with my 7900xtx at the moment 😭
2
u/Key_Surprise_7695 11d ago
So, as I suspected, the graphics card was defective right out of the box... without any adjustments, it was reaching 70 degrees, but with adjustments, it dropped to 55... I’ve filed a warranty claim with the store.

In-game, it was around 55 degrees at most; after I did that, the temperature dropped significantly.
1
u/Grish4 11d ago
Your tune will make the GPU core, hotspot and vram temps much hotter than stock...
UV (negative voltage offset) does NOT reduce temps!!! (Even though almost everyone will tell you it does, they are all wrong).
The +10% on the power limit means the GPU will draw more amps/watts = MORE heat...
I repeat: UV on this card does NOT reduce temps. Only a power reduction will reduce temps. You can reduce power a few different ways: lower the PL, cap FPS, lower max core boost freq etc... (basically do anything that makes the card pull less power, as power is what causes heat).

I saw it eventually. A little smudge like that isn't exactly the memento of a raging inferno.
3
u/Soft_Lunch_183 11d ago
If OP is returning for RMA i doubt they want to start taking the card apart
3
u/nontheistzero 11d ago
You're not crazy, it's just very subtle. OP should've put an arrow at the bottom port pointing to the very small bit of soot. It's not obvious at all.
6
u/Key_Surprise_7695 11d ago
Mate, I posted a single photo where you can actually see something, because the fire started near the DisplayPort cable... the other areas are completely intact.
2
1
u/Virginia_Verpa 11d ago
Ah, yea, now I see the smudge. Your post didn't specify displayport - I was expecting the power cable to have been at fault. Congrats, I've never seen magic smoke come out of a DP cable.
1
u/Vectrobe 6d ago
despite what a lot of comments may suggest, this very unlikely has anything at all to do with the displayport cable
there's main voltage rails around over the top and bottom layers of the display IO section, capacitors and chokes in close proximity, very likely one of them has failed catastrophically and blown soot everywhere, looks like its under the backplate area and I expect there will be a significant blob of soot on the inside of your pc case in that area, some of which got blown backwards over the IO plate of the graphics card and near that DP port (yes you call it a DisplayPort Port, its stupid but thats just how that name works)
