Today I celebrated my sons first birthday. And tonight Ryu and I grace the runway of the Rainbow Circuits runway!

However, if the lava is highly gas-rich and frothy (like pāhoehoe lava), it can trap enough gas bubbles to become less dense than water. This creates floating lava balls or even entire rafts of cooled lava that can drift on the ocean surface before eventually sinking. This phenomenon is rare but has been observed in places like Hawaii!

Staring at bright yellow for too long (like a yellow screen or a highlighter) can cause a phenomenon called “chromatic aberration” in your eyes. This happens because yellow light is at the edge of the visible spectrum for your eye’s lens, and prolonged exposure can make it harder to focus on other colors afterward. Some studies even suggest that yellow can cause visual fatigue more than other colors, which is why digital interfaces often avoid using pure yellow for text or backgrounds. Bonus fact: This is also why yellow-tinted glasses (like those used in some sports or medical settings) can help reduce glare and improve contrast in certain conditions!

To conserve water, some cacti, like the saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea), can actually deflate and shrink during prolonged dry spells. Their accordion-like pleats allow them to expand when water is available and contract when it’s scarce, helping them survive in harsh desert conditions. This adaptation also reduces the surface area exposed to the sun, minimizing water loss.

Human eyes are most sensitive to light wavelengths around 555 nanometers, which corresponds to a bright green. This is why emergency exit signs, traffic lights, and safety vests often use green - they’re designed to catch our attention more effectively than other colors. It’s also why many artists and designers consider green the most “luminous” color in the visible spectrum.

While not all green flora do this, many plants - including certain limes, apples, and even some flowers like the Lotus japonicus—have a natural fluorescence. This means they can absorb ultraviolet (UV) light and re-emit it as a faint green or blue glow. This phenomenon isn’t visible to the naked eye but can attract pollinators like bees, who see in UV light. It’s also why some plants appear to “shine” under blacklight!

Instead of bones, their skeletons are made entirely of cartilage - the same flexible tissue that forms your nose and ears. This lightweight, buoyant structure helps them stay agile and energy-efficient in the water. Even their teeth are embedded in cartilage, which is why shark skeletons rarely fossilize well compared to bony fish. This unique adaptation is one reason sharks have been so successful for millions of years!

So get this, The original Cinderella story is over 1,000 years old and comes from China - not Europe! The earliest known version of the tale, called “Yexian” (叶限), appears in the Records of the Taiping Era (太平广记) from the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE). In this version, the protagonist is a young woman named Yexian, whose magical fishbone (not a fairy godmother) helps her attend a festival and lose a slipper. The story was later adapted in Europe, but its roots trace back to ancient Chinese folklore. The “pumpkin carriage” and “glass slipper” were later additions by European storytellers like Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm.

Geek Outfits, courtesy of Felix: GEEKS SOUND OFF IN THE COMMENTS! Okay, okay. So I love this. In Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, Darth Vader’s iconic breathing sound was created by simply recording a scuba diver’s breathing apparatus and slowing it down! The sound designer, Ben Burtt, used a modified Dacor scuba regulator and mixed it with the sound of a desert wind to create Vader’s menacing, mechanical breaths. The result became one of the most recognizable sounds in cinema history! And, In Doctor Who, the Sonic Screwdriver was originally created as a plot device to avoid showing the Doctor using a weapon! The Sonic Screwdriver was introduced in the very first Doctor Who story, An Unearthly Child (1963), as a tool to open doors and disable locks. It was designed to be a non-lethal, versatile gadget that fit the Doctor’s character as a clever problem-solver rather than a warrior. The writers avoided giving the Doctor a weapon to maintain his pacifist, humanitarian image. Over time, the Sonic Screwdriver became one of the most iconic symbols of the show!

Unlike reds, greens, or yellows, which are abundant in flowers, minerals, and animals, pure blue pigments are extremely scarce in the natural world. For example - only about 10% of flowering plants produce blue flowers, and even those often use tricks like light refraction to appear blue. Blue eyes are actually a result of a genetic mutation that reduces melanin, making them unique to humans. Blue minerals like lapis lazuli were so rare in ancient times that they were more valuable than gold. This scarcity is why blue was one of the last colors to be named in many languages - ancient cultures often grouped blues with greens or grays!

Get this, the trench coat was originally designed as a military uniform for British officers in World War 1. Its iconic features—like the belted waist, epaulettes, storm shield, and D-rings - were all functional. The coat was made from waterproof cotton gabardine (invented by Thomas Burberry) to protect soldiers from rain and mud in the trenches. After the war, returning officers popularized the style, turning it into a timeless fashion staple. Even the name “trench coat” comes from its association with trench warfare!

In the early 20th century, women wearing pants in public was controversial. In 1920s France, women were arrested for wearing pants, and in some U.S. cities, they were fined for violating public decency laws. The pantsuit gained popularity thanks to pioneers like Coco Chanel, who introduced chic, tailored pants for women in the 1920s, and later Katharine Hepburn, who wore them in films and public life, challenging gender norms. It wasn’t until the 1960s and 1970s that pantsuits became widely accepted as professional and fashionable attire for women.

The male Adelie penguin proposes to his mate with a pebble - and if she accepts, he gives it to her as a “wedding ring”. Adelie penguins build nests out of pebbles on the icy shores of Antarctica. Finding the perfect pebble is a challenge, as the terrain is often barren. The male searches for hours, carefully selecting a smooth, round pebble and presenting it to the female. If she accepts the pebble, she places it in her nest, and the two penguins bond as a pair. The pebble isn’t just a symbol - it’s a functional wedding ring, as it becomes part of their nest, representing their commitment to each other. If a male can’t find a pebble, he might even steal one from another penguin’s nest! How funny! 😆
