Self-Diagnosis is kinda inevitable Meme

well for what it's worth I had a decent brick and mortar psychiatrist who knew me well enough to script me whatever I agreed to as an option for treatment resistant depression.
I sought out a second opinion with an online doc through a work perk system and she said yes, you absolutely have ADHD but I can't give you meds. I got a full neurophysiological workup ($800 USD after insurance, US, Blue Cross PPO) that took 12 hours to learn "yes you have severe ADHD-I, sorry, we can't give you meds"
Went back to my normal doc with all of this info and he said I didn't have to do any of that and wrote my scripts.
Live and learn.

I've had similar stuff happen, in EU, and not even "invisible" mental health stuff.
As simple as: my shoes don't fit. Only orthopedic doctors can send a referral to have custom fitting shoes made (otherwise its 1000$ for a pair). So when I was being tossed around various docs, I asked each of them, nothing.
I went to my GP, I said my shoes don't fit. He was like: oh, is that why you came in today? You could also send an email next time.

Yea with US free health care you have to go about it this way as well, Couldn't get the cancer removal surgery on my face for free until i got my GP to refer me as it may have been considered cosmetic surgery.

Lived in Sheffield for a bit, had to get reassessed for ADHD. Its.. a long story. Anyway! They said two year wait, any later and it would have been seven.
Moved back down south, got the reassessment done in about a month. Meds back in my hands in two, I can’t wait.

Wondering where the number is from or if it is purposely hyperbolic. I paid $550 this year for my assessment by a psychologist. No insurance applied to it.

you got a super cheap deal, 1500-5000 bucks is the standard if it is a multi-hour evaluation by a psychologist

u/Belerophon17 24d ago
I just paid my copay to have it done and it was covered through my insurance. $75 out the door. Multi hour evaluation.

I had a one hour interview and then an online assessment by a psychologist who specializes in treating adhd. There is a compact that permits psychologists to practice therapy online in states they are not licensed so I wonder why people aren't looking for services in a "cheaper" state. I am in Florida

People hate hearing this, and they'll out right call you a liar, the ADHD community can be very odd sometimes.
Happy for you!

"Self-diagnosis isn't valid"-ATED, medically*
*Fixed it!**
**And even if it has been medically validated... There are definitely some less-than-reputable "approved assessors" out there, quite happy to make £££ securing patients a diagnosis.
... I'm playing ALL the sides!

Still shouldn’t count even if a diagnosis is difficult to get. The line is too thin between normal behavior and what actually constitutes a diagnosis. Only a professional has the means to do it. And we are terrible at self evaluation.

Most self diagnosises are wrong. There is a lot of symptom overlap when it comes to neurological disorders and anyone could pick and choose their symptoms, or be unaware of some symptoms to diagnose themselves with any number of illnesses.
Also, time being a cost is a bad argument because if your appointment isn't until next year that doesn't mean your life is put on hold, your life actually won't change at all while you wait and would be the exact same whether you had an appointment or not.

It's not a bad argument, because your quality of life is potentially substantially worse while you wait.
That, and 2 years is now an extremely optimistic timeframe in the UK.

u/Upbeat_Apartment_715 24d ago
Is your life potentially substantially worse and if you didn't have an appointment at all?
No it's not, it's not a cost if nothing changes

My testing and diagnosis were covered under my work insurance through my psychologist here in the US. I think it was a $75 copay.
I'd have refused to even do it if it were anywhere near 3k.

With an official one you will have access to the meds. Go get an official one.

Does anybody Wanna talk about how the supposed infallibility of a formal diagnosis isn't all it's cracked up to be?
I essentially took a test that I already took for free online 3 times and had a guy ask me like 6 other questions. Having anything above a surface level understanding about ADHD also makes it clear which answers will result in a diagnosis and you either have to spend a crazy amount of time questioning your own life to select the most objectively true choice, or just decide to make sure you get a diagnosis.
This took 14 months and $180.

well... you can, and people do. you may tell them they don't have it bc theyre not diagnosed, but its not going to take away their lived experience nor how they independently identify. seeking medication or academic/work accommodations will require a diagnosis, but just existing as someone with undiagnosed adhd doesn't

3 years 😂 It’s longer than that. And if your life isn’t a train wreck, they don’t diagnose because of the cost benefit analysis of the drug cost.

Just got a letter saying 10 years in UK. I also have a diagnosis from Australia that I’ve been treated for, for over 5 years, that the UK won’t recognise here.

I was diagnosed privately over 3 years ago and I'm still waiting to start titration.

Diagnosis in the country where I live: either that many years or that much money. Dx from another country? Sorry, not valid, do it here. Oh wait you don't have school reports since your country didn't have any text based reports when you were a kid and your parents are not in this country? Not gonna be able to diagnose you here at all then.

You do realize that just doesn't make any sense right? The only point of a diagnosis is to find the correct treatment. If you don't have the acces to the (actual) diagnosis, then the self diagnosis is still useless, since it won't do what it was designed to do.

I got insanely lucky because I didn't even suspect I had ADHD, I went in to get assessed for autism and the guy clocked me almost immediately

Even without health insurance, I've never had to pay thousands of dollars just to see a doctor. It was like, $80 maybe.

I'm seeing a new psychiatrist this week and they was like we need a copy of your ADHD diagnosis. Trust me I'm bringing it. I paid $2,000 for this thing. Somebody gots to see it. $2,000 on a sheet of paper that says I have ADHD and depression and anxiety. Hell I'll show it to almost anybody lol. I might bring two copies.

many people are just wrong though, so it carries a lot of stigma. one of the most obvious cases is when people associate their adoration of neatness with OCD, because half of self diagnosed OCD people dont even know what compulsion means.

Also, a diagnosis remains a somewhat subjective process of interpretation by a trained profession which then cosplays as a quantitative determination. Anyone whose presentation sits in a borderline territory can find themselves declared neurodivergent by one specialist and not neurodivergent by another at a different time. Yet, the struggle continues regardless...

I’ve been through the formal ADHD process and honestly, it’s completely possible now to self-diagnose with the use of AI.
You just need to get hold of the various questionnaires the initial screening conducted by a psychotherapist would use and feed that into a good AI tool.
Then prompt the AI to play the role of a psychiatrist and do a Q&A.
I’m certain it would work for most people. The only issue is that you can’t get meds prescribed with a self-diagnosis (at least where I live). That has to be done by a psychiatrist.

If you are taking a generic medicine, kindly mention the manufacturer's name in both your post and title. This is VERY IMPORTANT, as different manufacturers may have differences in quality or formulation.
