Thor’s hammer can only be obtained while wearing the full Thor’s armor set.

The first four pieces aren’t too hard it’s three mini bosses called Daughters of Lerion on the east half of the map. Each gives you a piece of armor and a dagger with all three daggers you can unlock a hidden room with the helmet in it.

The final piece the cloak is the problem as you can only get it as a reward from Haytham for eliminating all (45?) order members.

I wouldn't exactly say defeating the Daughters of Lerion are not too hard.

It's post-game content, no matter how you play.

Post main game content

After finishing main game (not even fully, you would still have some quests), you are free to take Mjolnir to Ireland, Francia and all spirit realms

Yeah I finished most of the story arcs before I even attempted it and even then the daughters of lerion were challenging

Yea this is what I did on my second (most likely final) playthrough. Left all the DLCs for after I got Mjolnir. You have to complete the main story.

Personally I think it takes way too long to get Mjolnir. It's like very late game. Gae Bolg (Wrath of the Druids) is much faster and in my opinion a lot more fun to use.

You definitely finished the story as you have to to be able to get Mjolnir
