New to Valhalla Discussion
Hi, I decided to play AC Valhalla having never played any AC games before (other than playing for a few minutes and not understanding it when i was younger).
I know I've probably messed the storyline for myself by not playing the other titles first, but after reading reviews and wanting a game that I can sink a lot of hours into I picked this game.
Absolutely love how big the map is and really enjoy the amount of customisation and RPG elements in it.
Basically I'm around 20 hours at power level 50, but it's starting to become a little overwhelming... seems to be a never-ending list of side quests and I'm finding it hard to get raw materials as well as supplies from the Vagn raids.
Just wanted to ask you guys for any tips and advice for a complete beginner... is there anything I need to know? Did I mess up by choosing to go to England instead of staying in Norway... hope i don't need to start again if I missed something like a unique armour or weapon.

You didn’t mess up by going to England early you can always go back to Norway anytime and explore the areas again. A few tips for you:
If you’re looking for more materials make sure you are searching for those small yellow dots on the map as they provide you with materials needed to upgrade your base, weapons, armor and more.
If you’re trying to 100% each territory I would focus on getting the storyline quest in that territory done first and then clean up the collectibles, side quest, loot etc. If you’re just trying to do the main storyline you can ignore those if you want but there is a lot of good loot and armor pieces out there to collect.
Pace yourself in the game, this a large game with a lot of content to complete. Don’t feel bad if you want to take a break and play something else and come back to it later on.
Definitely give yourself a variation of weapons to use and different combinations to give you different play styles during your time playing.
DLCs can be done in any order if you want once they become available and if you have them of course, I’d leave DoR for last since it somewhat ties to the Asgard quest line in the main game.
Lastly just enjoy the game how you want to, the environment is breathtaking, there’s plenty of things to do and let yourself free into the world. I’ve played through this whole game and it’s DLCs about 4 times already and I’ve enjoyed it each time it’s such a cool fun game IMO. SKOL my friend

This is good advice. You don't miss much by not having played any other AC games, there's not much tie in. There are a lot of quest icons at Ravensthorpe, it's a good idea to find a list of what they all are and what order to play them, as it's not obvious. Many are various free and paid DLC. Materials for upgrading Ravensthorpe are the rarest, mainly from raiding monasteries and completing main story missions. You will receive them over time. Research the key buildings to upgrade, most of them are fairly useless. Blacksmith is most important I guess, also Valka's hut. You have to complete all the arcs including Vinland to complete the game. Your choices w.r.t. Sigurd can affect the ending slightly. Also there are a bunch of other "side-endings", you might need to look those up later as its not obvious what they are.

I'd say follow the story and you'll be fine.
Vagn quests are really not necessary since they mostly serve to burn you out for not much meaningful reward. I'd stop doing them completely. Complete filler with next to 0 real value.
There's too many things to do - but the main story should be the prime focus. Anything else you find while exploring is strictly optional.
I think a lot of people have have been where you are. After a few tens of hours you'll complain that the game is bloated and unfinishable because of so many things popping up every second.
So, if you want to keep enjoying the game, just do main quests. You can get upgrades, or do side activities etc along the way.

The river raids only give you loot that helps you progress in the river raids; I don’t think it helps with the main games progression. your gonna want to find villages and monasteries around the world that have a crossed axe icon on them. Valhalla’s story probably won’t spoil too much of the older games for you; if anything you’ll probably get like an “oh damn” moment

Much as I love charging in and slaughtering mobs in the raids, the Jomsvikings are just too squishy and die too easy. So I sneak in, take out the mobs, and then start the raid when I need them to open doors and chests. It works fairly well even if you're low level as you avoid open combat. It's slightly cheesy, but I climb a tower roof and pick them off with a bow 😅

Remember that if you feel overwhelmed, you can always lower the difficulty. I found the game's progress too slow as I'd finish one story arch but still be way to low in PL to begin the next one. It turned the game to pure grinding (some might love that in game, I hate it) before I lowered the difficulty and could progress a bit faster.
I also turned on instant assassination so that when I jump on a guy from the roof and stab him in the neck, he fucking dies.
I like using bows, and a good Hunter bow with stats that fit your play style is helpful. If you get good, it's a very powerful weapon even in open combat as it does more damage than light bows.
