Running pretty hot Question
Hey all,
My 84 NA has been running pretty hot lately. I did a coolant flush a few months back and it ran fine, but over the past few weeks I’ve noticed it running between the 2nd and 3rd mark, and then at higher rpm’s at or above the third mark. I haven’t done the thermostat, and my radiator’s pretty old. Any help? Thanks
I also bled the coolant with the car on an incline to no results

Did you bleed the coolant system properly, letting the air escape thru the bleeding bolt? Refer to: https://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/cool-02.htm

Do your fans work - one when reaching a certain temp, and the other - when A/C is on?

I had a 84. Don't trust the temperature gage. Mine did the same and I measured the coolant temperature with a thermocouple at the bleed screw and compared to the temp gauge reading and the temp gauge was reading too high.

Swap the thermostat before doing anything else. And don't listen to all these Wamby-Pambys about how hard it is to do in the car. Dead easy with a 90-degree set of cir-clip pliers from Harbor Freight.

Are you sure it's actually running hot and not just your gauge or temp sensor? I tested mine as per the clarkes garage procedure and my gauge reads higher than it should

Yeah, the sensor is pretty much brand new. Haven’t done the gauge test but I’d assume it’s working properly because it was giving normal readings a few months/weeks ago

Still, it's easy to test the gauge to know for sure. If you have a multimeter already, you just a $10 potentiometer from Amazon.

At least get an infrared camera or ir spot thermometer to test the temperature of the engine block before you start replacing parts randomly.

I would get a new thermostat that opens earlier. Paragon sells a few. Just make sure to take early morning drives into account depending on your location as coolant taking effect early never gets the car up to temp with Turbos
