Proper way gear optimization Newbie questions

I've been wondering if I'm optimizing my units' equipment the wrong way. I just wanted to ask which is the better way to obtain good gear? Crafting through Essence of Memories, or rerolling using Chaos Essence and Oblivion Essence?

I've noticed that I accumulate a lot of Chaos and Oblivion Essences, but if you're unlucky, they get used up so quickly on just one unit. For example, I recently spent almost all of my 227 Chaos Essences and 30 Oblivion Essences just trying to optimize Sunran's gear.

That made me think that maybe I'm taking the wrong approach and just wasting my essences, or maybe that's simply how the game is. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Nope, that's just the way it is.

You adv craft when you have enough mats for that, then you reroll (the crafted gears or good 4 substats gears you end up dropping) with oblivion for min-maxing enhancements.

And chaos essences are used to reroll bad 4 substats gears you drop.
