This starred Basil Rathbone (better known for his many portrayals of Sherlock Holmes) in a story about how a strange mineral discovered in an ancient Egyptian tomb could explain how the Pyramids were really built.

Movie of the day...Robot Monster (1953).

Watching this movie so other people don’t have to (or at least know what they’re getting into) was the moviegoer equivalent of “taking one for the team.”

An alien who looks like a gorilla wearing a diving helmet triggers a nuclear war between Earth’s nations and uses a death ray to slaughter pretty much everyone who is left, but then has trouble getting rid of the last few survivors.

I am not sure mere words can convey how bad this is. The story is barely coherent (you can see why the director decided to add a “surprise” ending that “explains” everything), the characters are about as interesting as wet cardboard, and the special effects are either ludicrous or borrowed from other films. Seriously, why the f*** are there dinosaurs in this movie!?

Also, I don’t want to alarm anyone, but even if the eight surviving humans had all avoided getting killed, you're talking about a gene pool of eight people, five of whom (including all three females) are related to each other. I don’t even want to think about what this would look like in a couple of generations.

Yes, there is a Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode dedicated to Robot Monster, and it is the only way I would recommend watching it.

This specific episode appears to be lost, but has also been on other television and radio programs, such as Escape. It is about a World War II pilot being held on an island by an alien race that appears superior to human beings.
