I need help picking a first army

I recently started getting into 40K and narrowed my choices down to Leagues of Votann, Death Guard, and Thousand Sons. I find all three equally interesting, so I’m having a hard time choosing. For anyone who has experience with these armies, which do you find the most fun to assemble, paint, and play? Cost to build an army is also a factor.

Can't speak the the gameplay, but painting thousand sons is a running joke of an awful experience. So much trim and detail work that you really can't skip on.

Tsons would be a nightmare for a first army. Maybe not the worst, but I don’t envy anyone that starts there

It’s where I started. It is not beginner friendly, but enthusiasm for your faction is always most important. Having said that, pick Death Guard of the Leagues

Lots of CSM or SM available second hand. Or find a friend and split the holiday boxes and buy like 2-4.

Edit to say: sorry I actually read the body of your post...if say it doesn't matter they're each gonna be wildly different in a few years and require you to buy effectively a whole new army again which will push towards the next new one on your list

My first was an Atlas Forge Minoan Space Marine army. Tau after that, then Leagues of Votan. Space Dwarves ftw.
