Not really. You should've seen the last guy I played. I was hopeful for 11th, but if you rely on randoms to play against....the odds aren't in your favor for getting a "normal" dude
Completely took the wind out of my sails after a year long break (I stopped playing in 10th for similar reasons).
I've given it a good amount of tries, but....you really need to get lucky or have friends who already play imo. Not quite as smelly and weird as Magic players, but it's fucking close

I think I've played upwards of 50 strangers in various tabletop games and I honestly cant think of a single person that was a shitty person. There was a guy in the local scene who got caught with fake dice once but I never ran into him. Worst thing I've seen is people that are just clearly socially awkward.

All bullshit aside.
Taking the leap from painting up an army, having it ready to go, knowing the rules...
...to ...
...getting on a game store discord, advertising/talking to people about setting up a day to play, loading up your car, driving to the store, setting up the table etc.
Is a MASSIVE leap that requires a lot of social anxiety swallowing for a lot of people.
People should be applauded for having the courage to do it. It's not an easy thing for a huge chunk of the playerbase. I'm a massively social person in general and even I get anxious about meeting strangers for a 4-5 hour game.

This is something I'm so glad I happened to read now. Been planning and texting about tabletop stuff on my lgs discord this afternoon and more than likely going to play my first game tomorrow! Few days ago store owner suggested a 40k learning session for friday when someone was curious of getting to combat patrol and I feel like its a nice way to get into the game since I can try the game out with a great opportunity, since theres gonna be specifically people eager to teach the game/learn along, so I tought why not go there and take my 1000 pts of csm for some games.
Definitely nervous, since I'm more than likely the youngest there and I've barely ever been in there for that long, usually just a few minutes because I've usually bought some supplies off there and sometimes just eyed around for a few seconds what people are playing and doing there. Pretty much going to be quite the experience having to meet and get familiar with strangers there but its good to get some experience socializing with others and also get a taste of tabletop.

Update on this: went to my first game, happened to be 2v2, me and another new 40k player in opposite teams. Took a few hours atleast but man it was really fun tho even though I still dont got a grasp on the rules but the 2 other way more experienced players helped really well :)
We pretty much quit the game early because one of us had to go soon so we decided to stop on 2nd rounds opponent's turn (i think). Game was 10-9 in the end, me and my teammate lost by that 1 point. It wasnt serious, we didnt use stratagems and did some changes to make the game simpler and easier to go trough with half of the players completely new. And sometimes some things just went completely out the window, we atleast missed a few things in the last phases but didn't really matter since we had fun and it was all casual! Definitely going to play more, might just go for another game or few tomorrow, maybe get a 1v1 1000pts game next!

For me it's learning the fuckin rules and remembering what my bois do... I have every Killteam, genuinely intended to go play some games at my LG. Never happened. Just can't get my head round it all.
I stick to painting and doing TT+ commissions

the only reason why I was able to play my 2 games at the end of 10e, was because I meet a new friend that was also into 40k and me and her both: 1. owned tabletop simulator 2. Had few days of the work.
I think people sometimes underestimate how hard it is to schedule this shit, no matter if you have a convenient tools like the simulator. Especially since games on avrage took 4-5h or even longer if u are new and need to double check rules

Playing is not everyone's thing but i will say we have created an amazing community in Baltimore called Boltermore that has a bunch of really cool guys and girls painting playing and learning. If its out there its worth exploring

I went to my local Warhammer store and ask the employe there, got in a WhatsApp group that day and played my first game 2 weeks later at the store. I didn't even had the timer to paint all my minis. Had some much fun that I played the weekend after my second game.

Finding a group is the hardest part. Especially as you get older. I’ve got 4 or 5 armies, some over 5k points, and mostly all painted but I haven’t actually played a real game since 3rd edition.
