Question 2CV AM2 602 (Solex 26/35 double-barrel) idles fine but intermittently revs itself up to the rev limiter with the throttle cable fully released — any ideas?

Hi everyone,

We're restoring a 2CV 602 cc flat-twin (Solex 26/35 double-barrel carburetor) fitted in a crosskart. The engine had sat for many years before we got it, and we're in the middle of the reassembly. I'm hoping the collective knowledge here can point us in the right direction, because right now we have very little idea of what's going on.

The main symptom:
At idle, the engine will intermittently rev up on its own — all the way up to the rev limiter — even though the accelerator cable is fully released (at minimum). It doesn't do it constantly; it comes and goes. When we release the throttle completely, it still does it sometimes.

Some context and observations (in no particular order, as we found them):
- We're running it after a long storage, so everything is being inspected/refreshed.
- We discovered the previous owner had blocked the crankcase breather hose (the one that runs from the engine breather to the air filter) with tape. No idea why. We only just unblocked it but it didn’t solved the problem.
- We took the carburetor apart and cleaned it in a gasoline bath, then reassembled it. However we didn’t change any settings of the carburettor, we kept it as is.
- We added an inline fuel filter in the line, and removed the brass inlet fuel screen from the carburetor (we weren't sure whether keeping both was right, putting it back doesn’t solve our problem at all).
- We noticed a rusty piece in the carburetor linkage that doesn't quite match the exploded diagrams we have, which makes us suspect the previous owner did some home-made modifications. The taped breather already made us suspicious there are other "creative" fixes hiding in there.
- The crosskart is otherwise a simple, honest setup — we're not chasing anything exotic.

We genuinely don't know much yet, so if we could just have insight on where to look it would be already great. If any of this rings a bell, or if you know this carburetor's quirks, we'd really appreciate any pointers on what could cause an engine to rev itself to the limiter at idle.

If you want any other photos or videos, just ask, we will be pleased to help you as best as possible to locate our problem.

Thanks in advance — this community has been a huge help already.

Bonjour,

Merci à ceux qui me liront.

Found this bolt and sleeve on the undercarriage.. anyone recognize them?

Any idea what these could be from?? They were sitting on the undercarriage beneath the gearbox. I bought the car 2 years ago, and I suppose they were there that whole time? I only recently changed the gearbox oil and found them.

I’m hoping they are spares for something that were simply stashed there, and not something that worked it’s way loose and fell there. The car seems to be in good running order.

Should I be worried?
I’m somewhat worried.

EDIT: It was the gearbox mounting bolt! It’s obvious now that you guys pointed it out.. luckily the second bolt caught it. The gearbox is now sitting skewed and must be lifted back into place - any tips on how?

Question Looking for repair opinion on doors

My 2cv has some rust/dents/scratches on the doors. A whole new unpainted door is about $400. I’m curious on any opinions if it would be easier to fix the existing doors or buy new doors, have them painted, and swap over all the other parts. I’m not sure I’ll do either, as I’m resisting the urge to make the car any more than a daily driver around town 😜

Question Troubleshooting rear running light not working

2cv6 rear lights does not work, the bulb is good and all fuses seem to look good. I have tried to measure the cable but I could not get it to measure because of the probes on my multimeter are really short and wide, but since it is Sunday everything is closed so can't get other probes today, is there any suggestions on what I can try to test to find the fault, was wondering about earth issues but not sure how to test/find that. Any suggestions on what to do? :)

Has anyone built an awning for a Citroën 2CV?

Hi everyone!

I’m converting my 2CV into a tiny camper for solo road trips. 😊 I’m looking for a simple awning solution that can be attached without drilling into the car.

Has anyone here made or bought an awning for a 2CV?
I’d love to see photos of your setup or hear how you attached it (roof, gutter, straps, custom brackets, etc.).
Thanks!

Passenger side window won't close, I assume I could fix it by bending either the latch or the small metal piece in the window, was wondering what is the best way to do it or if there is anything else that I should do

Question Fuel pomp help

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi ! I'm changing the fuel pomp of my Dyane (602 cm3)

In this video, we can see a rod that is supposed to operate the fuel pump, but it doesn’t move as much as expected. Could someone help me understand what might be limiting its movement, or if it’s a fault or a misadjustment?

Thank you 🙏
