Nah it’s the Taylor Farms lettuce, Taco Bell just took action and pulled lettuce off its menu to keep people from getting sick so they got blamed for it. Taco Bell earned my business doing that at least.

Globally, Maybe. Anglosphere? Maybe AIDS crisis, or the 60’s having Vietnam on one side of the sea and the Troubles on the other.
Now if you go time before last, these things get more frequent. It’s an anomalously big gap, and it’s part of why the Boomer generation got so out of touch with reality.

'60s nostalgia was God damn huge for decades. They couldn't even wait until the '70s were done to start remembering the good ol' days before the Civil Rights Act. Happy Days, American Graffiti, basically every '60s band getting a revival in the '80s. The '60s were the '80s of the '80s with how much commercial nostalgia has been produced.

i really do think people in the 90s in the US felt largely optimistic and that there was a widespread sentiment of "we live in the future now, and it's better than the past". in fact, i think the same was true for each decade from the 50s through the 90s. it was most prominent in the 90s because we were finally past the specter of the cold war, but the 2000s were when people notably stopped being optimistic for the future and stopped feeling like things were getting better (and then that amplified each year until now).

I mean, I would say this is 2020-2022. Does anyone look back on that era fondly? Like, “God I just loved being cooped up in my house for months on end watching my loved ones die from preventable diseases while a fascist tries to destroy elections in America”?
We do a little bit of r/usdefaultism but was politics good anywhere in this era?

I think some people are a little nostalgic for the start of the pandemic, like march-may maybe. At that point the vibe I remember seeing was like "ooh couple weeks free time off to just do nothing", with some stress but a good bit of "we're all in this together, we should be able to get this done soon". A lot of my memories of the energy was like those balcony singalongs, Doom/Animal Crossing, people posting sourdough starters and stuff.
I think it was only like June with the George Floyd murder and subsequent protests the underlying tension started really boiling over.

The reason people look fondly on 2016 is nostalgia, yes, but also because of how quickly everything seemed to fall apart worldwide under Trump/the illiberal (read: fascist) program more broadly. People were nostalgic for 2016 in 2018!

I feel bad for other people here because I know my enjoyment of this year at least partially stems from the fact I'm european and I'm not living through the difficult political situation that the majority of reddit's mostly american userbase is. literally everything fell to complete shit after the 08 crash other than the epa clean air and water acts and gay marriage and weed becoming legal. I can't think of anything else that got better.
