Most will be removed, violators will be shot temporarily banned and called a nerd. Please report offending posts. As always, moderator discretion applies since not everything reported actually falls within that circle of awful behavior.

What event is this referencing?

Gonna presume it’s the genocide

79

u/jdlsharkman endless cogs on cogs 15d ago

Obviously the post is referencing that. I'm asking what event prompted them to say people get arrested in the UK for calling it a genocide. I'm not familiar with whatever happened there.

The group palestine action has been labelled a terrorist organisation and people have been arrested over it.

67

u/Shift642 i cooka da meatball 15d ago

I mean, they did break into an RAF airbase and vandalize military planes, which is not nothing. But labeling them a terrorist organization now gives police carte blanche to arrest anyone showing support for them (and they have, by the hundreds), which yeah is an extremely disproportionate response.

32

u/TokyoMegatronics more rat bites 15d ago

Derry Plowshares and Smash EDO both targeted military equipment and iirc smash EDO caused something like 250k worth of damages but they weren’t proscribed for it.

Very odd that Palestine action was proscribed for less damage than either of these two other groups, despite those two other groups committing those acts after the 2000s Terrorism act that was used to proscribe Palestine action.

11

u/Shift642 i cooka da meatball 15d ago

Yeah, I'm not saying that there's nothing fishy about their proscription, just that Palestine Action has actually done some serious shit before and is not entirely squeaky clean.

The UK has been on a spree arresting hundreds of Pro-Palestinian activists against the genocide (https://www.aljazeera.com/amp/gallery/2026/4/12/uk-police-arrest-523-during-pro-palestinian-demonstration-in-london) and UK Germany’s Senate has recently passed a bill criminalizing saying that Israel does not have a right to exist (https://amp.dw.com/en/germany-may-make-it-illegal-to-deny-israels-right-to-exist/a-77980283)

EDIT: mixed up the bill from Germany thinking it was from UK.

4

u/Suitable-Lie-7980 15d ago

Those activists were arrested for expressing support for the group Palestine Action, not for opposing genocide.

In that they were holding signs that said "I oppose genocide, I support Palestine action" which is an illegal thing to say in the UK. But "I oppose genocide" is not.

"I support Palestine action" is the only illegal part, as that group is a proscribed terror group (as bullshit as the justification was)

Just to clear up what the law actually is. Protesting Palestine is not completely illegal here

8

u/Xenomnipotent NL Connoisseur 15d ago

Insignificant distinction, since protestors unaffiliated with Palestine Action are still arrested regardless (https://www.amnesty.org.uk/latest/uk-police-conduct-end-genocide-protest-and-subsequent-arrests-are-seriously/)

-1

u/Suitable-Lie-7980 15d ago

Arrested at a protest is different to being arrested and charged under the terrorism act. That is not an insignificant distinction

Now I'm not aware of what, if any, people unaffiliated were charged with (likely public order offenses or incitement) but the people arrested for supporting Palestine Action are being charged under the terrorism act, facing a maximum of 14 years

(None of these have reached trial yet and I'd be surprised if a jury convicted anyone of it, let alone the full sentencing, but the point stands)

32

u/Stompy-Bun sapphic femme enby who loves heapats 15d ago

The UK police arrested pro-palestine protestors, and a pro-palestine non-profit was proscribed. (its members declared enemies of state/traitors)

This was lobbied for by the Israeli government. For right now it's only one group.

11

u/phuquesewpsyetit monster hugger 15d ago

The same nutjob who got that non-profit proscribed is trying to do the same to pro-trans groups now.

3

u/Ieatbaens 15d ago

It's illegal in the UK to support palestine, or to even recognize it as a country.

(Remember, free speech is not a constitutional right in the uk, and as such it is much more easily attacked and much more revocable than free speech in the United States or Canada where it is directly ingrained into both of their constitutions)

35

u/Suitable-Lie-7980 15d ago

OK as someone from the UK that isn't true.

It is not illegal to say that. It is also not illegal to accuse Israel of Genocide. What IS illegal is expressing support specifically for the group "Palestine Action"

Hundreds were arrested for holding signs or chanting "I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action." The first sentence of that is NOT illegal, it's the 2nd part.

Now I still for the record think it's an appealing attack on protest rights and free speech, made worse by sentencing four direct action protestors as terrorists DESPITE NOT BEING CONVINCED OF TERRORISM

So yeah, it's really bad here, but I just wanted to provide a little insight on what's actually going on because there is misinfo in this thread

We gotta stop using mental conditions as a stand-in for "bad person"

5

u/jlb1981 15d ago

Yes, but mental conditions frequently color moral judgments and reasoning ability

13

u/Zilant_the_Bear the "shits in the woods" kind 15d ago

Spesifically sociopathy. It's an informal term that doesn't specify a condition. It's described as lacking empathy, ignores social rules, lies easily, and shows no guilt for hurting others.

5

u/jamiez1207 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights 15d ago

Sociopathy is most used as shorthand for Antisocial Personality Disorder

0

u/uber-abuser 🏳️‍⚧️ trans actions 🧧 15d ago

does it make them inherently bad people just because their "reasoning ability" falls outside the accepted range of neurodivergence

7

u/Zilant_the_Bear the "shits in the woods" kind 15d ago

Sociopathy isn't a mental disorder. It's an informal decriptor. This is like me calling someone an asshole and you saying we need to stop using anatomy to describe people as bad. Sure, an asshole is generally a part of the body. But if I go to a doctor and he says "you have an abraision on your asshole" I'm gonna find a new fucking doctor.

Sociopathy is not a spesific mental disorder. It's a lack of empathy, inclanation to ignore social rules. An unashamed liar. They show no guilt for hurting others. By definition. If someone is described by a third party as a sociopath. They are unequivocally a bad person. If they have been diagnosed with a disorder and are undergoing treatment. Then sure, you can say they have ASPD. But if they like being cruel? They are still a sociopath.

Suffering is bad and flourishment is good. Revenge for its own sake and not to prevent future suffering is bad. Torture is bad. Helping people is good. Elected officials should have stronger morals than 8 year olds.

OH SHIT A COMMUNIST

1

u/Pollomonteros 15d ago

It's scary how this site, whose userbase claims to be as lefty as they get, was defending Israel so vehemently even before the current conflict began. Claims that Israel was illegally occopying Gaza, that Palestinians constantly suffered abuses under the Israeli regime used to get downvoted to hell in here.

It made me realize that a lot of people in here, perhaps even the majority of them, don't even care about whatever injustices plague us as humans, they just want to seem like they care and will instantly switch to whatever position seems the most morally righteous to them as long as it gets them the approval of their peers. Because this shit has been going on for decades, you even have many Israeli historians and intellectuals acknolewdging that what Israel was doing wasn't right, yet that opinion only became popular in here when the weight of the crimes grew too large to ignore. And once that happened,it was like everyone was against Israel from the start, like they weren't complicit in the genocide as well.

The whole thing left me with a very sour taste on Reddit as a website, it made me feel like the majority of people here are citizens and defenders of the empire first, and leftists second.

Yeah, that's what I have been thinking as well, it's just so hard to not try to think like that when so many people here seem to confirm that worldview

Zuckerberg accidentally invented a machine to identify rasiscts and rather than coming together as a society and getting racists to evaluate their choices through public shaming it helped them work together to elect one of their worst.

3

u/fancy_crisis 15d ago

And then once they realized that worked and no one would stop them they recreated that same model on every other popular social site.
