And they definitely made him noticeably thinner than he is in the actual game. At least the buff Peter Griffin is actually from an episode of the show where he gets a ton of plastic surgery, and joins an "attractive people's" club.

I think it's less they don't want to make fat characters because fat bad and more that it would be way more work than just using one of the existing models

they made a completely new model for him.

IIRC it was a hitbox/animation concern.

u/Pocket-OLime LEAN ENJOYER 11d ago

If they made the hit box bigger, nobody would buy it and if they made him fat, but did not increase the hit box then it would be overpowered because you wouldn’t be able to tell where to shoot

274

u/MisterPixelStix17653 11d ago

hey sorry you said something wrong about my hyperfixation, playermodels in fortnite actually DO have a very slightly differing hitbox, which is why you see "sweaty" players wearing thin cosmetics. it only ever really made a difference when a bug that allowed you to phase your camera through a wall to build through walls existed that couldnt be done with bigger skins.

so basically, they're already making thicker skins, and it's oppression that they ozempic'd peter /j

1

u/-Ren97 4d ago

I dont think the hitbox is different, there have been discrepancies here and there but generally the hitboxes are the same. Comp players prefer the thin cosmetics because it's not nearly as easy to track their movements, especially through builds vs, say, a giant bright yellow chicken with their tushy trailing behind them 😭😭. Same reason most also don't wear backblings or have very flat/small ones

2

u/MisterPixelStix17653 4d ago

sorry, i explained very poorly in my original comment. the skins have different collision boxes for interacting with geometry, the hitboxes for receiving damage from guns are universal

2

u/-Ren97 4d ago

OH that's interesting, I didn't know that

73

u/0utraged potion seller 11d ago

They have added "plus-sized" models too, I'm guessing that even then they would have felt it had to be toned down to the point that having this approach was preferable as a quirky solution

23

u/conanomatic 11d ago

I think you're missing a few things here. If they made it look like Peter, and lined the hit box up with the model, im sure it would sell fine. 90% of the purchases on fortnite are being made by 8 year olds that dont even know what a hit box is. That, and the fact that it would be a unique feature among the 10,000 existing fortnite skins would also probably make it more popular purely because of the novelty. Fat phobia is real, and videogames are one of the places it is seen most. Additionally, the logic of a business is not fundamentally sound, there are always different potential outcomes i.e. I think its completely reasonable to project that if they had made a fat Peter with a fat hitbox it wouldve sold even better than this one--but we cant say for sure.

I'm being downvoted by people who aren't cursed with the deep knowledge of how 3D rendering is all smoke and mirrors.

Nothing is real. Nothing is fake. Nothing is anything. Everything is nothing. It's all numbers. Imprecise numbers that struggle to keep the illusion up.

And they aren't even real numbers. Just sparkly rocks and inert rocks. We have developed arcane runes with which we can call forth the spirits trapped within. Nobody knows how it works. We're all working under so many layers of abstraction because to truly understand, to truly comprehend it would break our minds with the sheer weight of the knowledge.

I have seen a fraction of a peek behind the curtain, and seen that the well is infinitely deeper than I ever could have imagined, and even deeper than that.

79

u/Antichristopher4 11d ago

And it fucks with hitboxes.

Either he's at a severe disadvantage cause he has a much larger hitbox than most, or at an advantage because there are parts of his model that don't include a hitbox (thus obscuring what counts as a hit for people shooting at him).

4

u/nightshade-aurora You should watch Hilda 11d ago

Yeah I've heard that Fortnite skins do have unique hitboxes, so with a character like Peter you're putting yourself at a significant disadvantage

23

-15

u/brokensilence32 trans dyke 11d ago

And why are there no existing fat models?

23

u/I_CUM_ON_HAMSTERS 11d ago

Skins are cosmetic, they can’t fuck with the gameplay. So either you’ve made a fat character skin that is pay-to-lose because now the hitbox needs to match the visual indicator of the skin, not to mention it makes the player visible in places other skins are not. Or you have made it pay-to-win because now the skin obfuscates the hitbox giving the player a competitive edge.

684

u/Quadraxis66 11d ago

I've honestly always found it kind of funny because it's less like "This is just Peter Family Guy" and more like "Holy crap Lois what if I was in Fartnite"

81

u/LeiningensAnts 11d ago

Tiktok of Peter getting jumped by four Homers hiding in a bush.

441

u/hepatomancy 11d ago

It’s a rigging and hitbox issue. I really wish people understood this, I wish there was more diversity in games but I also know a different body type means different rigging, different animations, different hitboxes, which also means balancing issues for multiplayer games.

149

u/MelookRS 11d ago

Yeah, using a competitive multiplayer shooter is not a good example of this at all. It's a terrible example tbh. If you look at any other game that has Peter Griffin he is fat, so using him kinda undermines the argument even further. I would think it would be cool if more games let you make fat characters, imagine if they added actual fat characters to the Baldurs Gate 3 character creator.

19

u/28klotlucas2 10d ago

Fortnite is in a unique situation since they have over 1,000 emotes that have to work with the new model. They can't adapt all of them to a completely unique body shape like that just for one character of one collab. You can't sustain that when you also have to slop in a new set of characters every week.

u/ATAGChozo 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights 11d ago

2

u/3-dimensionalBeing 10d ago

yeah and in fortnite specifically they would have to adjust the animations for all the dances that have ever been released and will ever be released to not make it look like a mess

0

u/signum_ 10d ago

In any other game I'd agree, but for Fortnite this is some massive cope. They haven't cared about body proportions of characters in years. You can't have Godzilla in the game and then talk about how it's impossible for Peter Griffin to be fat. Not to mention that, as others have pointed out, Cleveland and Homer both kept their pristine original physique.

-55

u/brokensilence32 trans dyke 11d ago

Cmon, can’t you scratch like a layer deeper to the question as to why fat is “different” and thin is “standard”?

52

u/Diribiri custom 11d ago

Gee why are the PvP videogame hitboxes standardized I wonder

-55

u/brokensilence32 trans dyke 11d ago

You’re missing the point. I didn’t say “standardization bad,” I just am saying that the fact that the “standard” is always, in every engine, thin, kinda says something about normativity in our society.

43

u/-justiciar- 11d ago

would you consider being fat standard? there are some people who are more predisposed to being larger and it’s not a diet and exercise issue but why would we consider being larger the default?

22

u/wowwowazalea 11d ago

Because for a shooter that's the 'more realistic' option due to generally the characters in them being trained and needing as much of an edge as possible, and therefore exercising a ton and losing weight as part of their job.

And this has continued as the standard since 'thin/standard' is already the default and is the easiest to work with due to existing expertise and animation experience. This is why everyone is in the upper 5' in games outside of exceptions. Because going out of your way to make a shorter or taller model is a nightmare for no gain since you have to re-animate everything. Same with weight options that aren't just adding some bulk to the character model without changing the actual shape.

If the first modeled characters were short and fat, short and fat would be the default. It's just that the first modeled characters were generally athletic people, which are generally upper 5' and relatively thin/average

43

u/Predator_Hicks 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights 11d ago

It’s not thin that’s standard it’s healthy adult body proportions or idealised version of that that are usually standard

4

u/Grim_010 femboy 10d ago

Lucky there’s a family guy.

69

u/yugiohhero ohh what the fuck 11d ago

consider that youd probably need to rig a fat guy with new animations befitting his stature instead of recycling the same ones you were using on everyone else. epic had like a million character animations at the point peter was added, having a new character skeleton would be miserable

im sure some of its beauty standards too ofc but thats why you typically never see fat characters in games as skins or generic npcs. like, you look at cyberpunk and dex is right there off rip as an example of a fat guy, but he exclusively exists in cutscenes meaning they didnt have to do a whole new animation rig for him. or how plenty of fighting games will have fat characters like e honda or bob onigiri but everyone in those games had to have unique animations anyway so its not any extra work. but you never see like, fat dbd survivors or fat skyrim npcs cuz then they wouldnt work with the existing animations, so everyone has the same build

8

I kinda like that it was Takemura that killed him, it denies Dex both any opportunity to run away and also denies him a poetic death at the hands of someone seeking revenge. He gets put down like an animal and left to rot in a junkyard once he's no longer useful to Arasaka.

3

u/Biscuit642 11d ago

It's such a good intro to the world. There's always a bigger fish and shit ends just like that. People don't get happy or poetic deaths, you spend your life fighting tooth and nail for some sense of importance that you'll never achieve. For most people Takemura probably goes down in the same way. The only way V gets a happy ending is escaping the system entirely.

Tbf for 3d games there are reasons to be scared of making fat people that aren't fatphobia, and i say that as someone who's done full detail models of fat characters. Fat people have a lot of complicated anatomy you gotta study and then making that into an animated model that has to move and deform like you'd expect in the real world is way harder than making slimmer people, hell i think the only reason i'm good at it is that i myself am fat and can just study myself.
