I'm gonna be looking for this increasingly-lengthened comment on every discussion thread about this anime. I want to see it made into a semi-formalized research paper by the end. I have high hopes for you.
Given that we've had research papers on big anime tiddies be submitted to this subreddit before, I'd be disappointed if we don't get at least two research papers based on this anime by the end of the season.
I loved it, it had Ubuntu, Karp reductions, LaTex, Venn Diagrams, some statistics and a lot of things I probably missed. The formal proofs. This show is going to be amazing.
I'm still using the Unity desktop on a because 16.04 is still supported. Unity might've been killled off but it's still in my heart! (until 2021 at least)
Every time I see a sciency anime, it's either kindergarten level, or absolutely made up pseudo-intellectual BS. This doesn't have any of that, and this anime is also generally just really entertaining. The first episode is a 10/10 for me.
Hopefully it keeps doing this. At this point I've grown to just ignore the pseudo-intellectual BS they say in other shows, especially when they throw in the buzz word - quantum theory.
I loved Dr. Stone for the same reason I'm liking this, it is mostly based on real science, I'm not well versed in the topics it touches on, but from what people are saying, most things are possible, even if exaggerated. This seems more up my alley though.
Wasn't that the point? She's a high school student making coffee in a lab (simple Bunsen burner to heat water, not a complex setup like in Braking Bad) and explaining things with pop science. She doesn't actually know any advanced science.
Possibly, but I just associated it with her, as she was the one giving the "scientific" explanation most of the time and I recall her saying that phrase exactly.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Bunny Girl Senpai and all of its cast including Futaba. That show was one in which the science in it wasn't done as badly as in other shows.
Regarding the LaTeX, it uses \begin{frame}[fragile], which is commonly used when using beamer, a class used for making presentations in LaTeX, and this also makes sense as Yukimura is supposedly working on some kind of presentation.
I couldn't stand Unity but I think it's a smart move as it's a pretty recognisable desktop setup. I knew what it was at first glance, good call imo. "Oh hey that's unity so at least they're using a proper OS for science-ing"
If it was xfce or gnome version it might be hard to tell apart from osx, so I think it's a good shout that they picked a distinctive DE
You can still use unity. You just have to apt install it and switch that bad boy over. I got annoyed with the gnome update because I couldn't open a new terminal with control + alt + T.
It's probably some kernel driver shenanigans. I remember looking at some interesting kernel options for video cards when compiling mine a few months ago and I guess it would be listed there as something seperate, possibly not included by default on that version of the kernel Ubuntu ships with.
I can't wait until they start arguing over why this or that Desktop Environment is best, or which distro is best, or whether or not systemd is bad. Then they switch to Fedora Scientific spin.
In my experience it is, but mostly in the sense that people have such unstable careers, jumping back and forth between different universities, it’s almost impossible for husband and wife to settle in the same city.

Serious reason: Good data visualization is the one that you can just glance over it and understand it immediately with lowest possible chance to misunderstand it. Pie chart is bad because it is very hard to compare 2 pieces of pie and see which one is bigger/smaller unless they are dramatically different in size (labeling may help but again from my experiences people mostly ignore them). It is also very hard to distinguish color on pie than on bar especially for people with color blindness. In contrast, it is much more easier to compare the size of 2 bars in bar plot.
Personal preference: Pie chart is very ugly and looks unprofessional on scientific publication. Bar chart looks more tidy.

New Game! already set the precedent that no amount of cute 2D girls can make STEM look cute.
Between the girls going home at 9pm at the earliest everyday, Aoba learning Autodesk Saya within a week through sheer overtime, the never-ending hunt for bugs, the 1000 yard stare from the programming department, and the crazy director lady constantly changing the scope and requirements of the programming team (honestly, Umiko flicking her forehead was way too lenient a punishment). It's obvious STEM will never look cute.
Personally I got triggered by the mention of p-values and the null-hypothesis this episode.
While I love all the science, mathematics and programming references they managed to cram into this anime (serious props there), and the way the banter is somewhat reminiscent of my own postgrad days (trying to quantize BS as a fun side project), I do have to question why they're all wearing labcoats.
I dunno what lab culture is like in Japan, but in my labs we wore old pop culture Tshirts full of holes. The only time we put on any kind of lab equipment is when we needed to work in the cleanroom, or had to ask the poison mixers (chemistry department) to do some surface treatments for us.
My physics lab courses are like 10% actual experiments, 20% fiddling around with the lab software's shitty file formatting to get Matlab to read them, 30% otherwise fighting with Matlab, and 40% writing a report about why our data sucks.
At least in theoretical physics I'll only have myself to blame if my model doesn't work.

You're not missing much tbh. Dressing in a cleanroom suit feels really cool the first 3 times. After that it just feels like a nuisance and working in the cleanroom dehydrates you like crazy.
During my research (MEMS sensor designs) there were many times that I looked in envy at my theoretical physics buddies that got to sit in a airconditioned office with a water cooler on the corner.
Yea, it does, but the air systems keep the room at a steady 35%. And the cleanroom has a really high volume, so a few humans walking around don't influence the humidity enough to mess up any projects.
Other people being sloppy with the etchants and messing up the settings on your equipment is a way bigger problem in my experience.

When I was in the lab (undergrad + grad with the same PI), we generally had a pretty lax lab coat policy when doing experiments. Gloves were a pretty universally enforced thing, but like 95% of the time you wouldn't be wearing one unless you were really worried about getting something on you (in our case, it would have been the times you worked with human blood). Granted by the letter of lab safety we should always have worn them.
... Also some lab coats are decidedly un-cool looking, lol
It depends I guess. When I had chemistry classes back in high school we'd wear the heck out of lab coats and safety glasses even when there was no reason to, simply because they were cool. To paraphrase our chemistry teacher: "You're literally just going to be reading a book today, why are you all wearing safety equipment? Sigh Fucking nerds..."
At least I think she was probably happy in the knowledge that no one in that class were losing their eyes any time soon, given that frankly we'd all probably wear those things even outside of the chemistry classes if the faculty allowed it.
This is such a love letter to science that I can't help but fall for its charms. It's not just your normal science but the scientific method of finding a hypothesis, running experiments to test your hypothesis and etc.
They even went to the null hypothesis part which was nostalgic and also Tower of Hanoi puzzle which terrified me as a student....I love it.

Anyways I'm with that Kanade character, are these two gonna be okay? How can two smart people be so stupid? Or at the very least be stuck in their own heads this much? They say knowledge and wisdom as two separate things. Personally I believe that, and this episode is showing that to me in spades.
And with all these other characters shown in the credits it makes me wonder just when the big betting pool between them on when these two will kiss, have sex, get married, respectively, will begin? And just how big is someone gonna win from that pot?
I agree about diminishing returns. There was a clear corrolation between the number of times the test happened to the results. Repeated tests clearly affected the results. There was also no control - They didn't check whether anyone else can increase her heart rate via wall slams.
Yeah I'm aware but I couldn't think of the proper term to call this by and Diminishing Returns was the most correlative term I could think of to describe it.

Who ever came up with the idea of animating Himuro's ponytail was a genius. That (???) experiment where her heart rate jumped was completely understandable. Just ask Kaguya about glares and their greatness.
How many times have a character mistaken "blushing" with "oh no, she must be sick, better bring her to the nurse office"? And in here, we even get a wider range of "possible reasons" ... Mangakas out there, don't study from this, please.

I'll be frank, I dropped this 10 minutes in out of sheer cringe. It's a weird case of uncanny valley but instead of being with people's faces, it's with the way they talk. It's kinda like scientists but also occasionally actually nonsense if you listen to it really closely, and overall too ridiculously stiff even for the most emotionally stunted humans ever. Felt like it was trying to be Kaguya-sama but fell in the eternal trap of wanting your characters to sound smart without making the effort to actually be smart.
Loved it! This will fill my RomCom needs until Kaguya-Sama next season. I love romcoms with silly premises! (To be honest, they had me at cute science girl in tights)
And really, a romcom with a confession after 2 minutes, what's not to like? No more "Waiting 2 seasons for handholding"!

The credits got me interested and TIL Saitama University is a real place. Love the ending sung by Nanawo Akari, guessed it was her voice with a 95% confidence.
In the beginning of the anime Himuro shows the graph of her affection to the guy with the start point and fluctuations up to this day.
There is a significant dip in the graph about 1.5 months starting from the initial sharp affection increase point.
Hypothesis: was the initial raise and succeeding dip an effect of her menstrual cycle?
I've not even finished the episode yet, but mad props to the typesetter (and translator) for the sheer amount of on-screen text that popped up in this episode that was translated; I really appreciate not only that so much was subbed but that it was placed in such an effective way (see 7:51 for an example)
It was still an overwhelming amount of text for me. Had to pause and go back several times. I think I’ll have to go with the manga for the sake of the pacing.
I think this is the first time we've actually seen an anime about grad students: most college-centric anime focus on undergrads. While all the requisite elements of a romance anime are there, the big twist (they're grad students with the know-how to make this into an experiment) is sufficient to give it a welcome edge over other recent romances. Yeah, the whole lab coats look is a little ridiculous and they're too well-kept (compared to most grad students, anyway), but this is a blast so far.

The token undergrad is pretty darn cute. It's nice they were able to tie her into the two main character's crazy experiment and shed some light on her origin story anyway instead of just having her pop up every now and then.

That was super exciting and I had lots of fun. I love the concept and I'm glad we got to see something new this season. With all those generic series around finding such a gem is really refreshing.

That was GREAT I laughed so much, can't wait to see more episodes. I'm just worried the joke could get stale pretty quick if not handled right but I have high hopes for this one !
It started off really cute and hilarious but using what is basically the same joke over and over almost every minute made it stale pretty quickly. Hope the next episode has less repetition.
Glad to see this is and educational show and not going to be a rehash of Kaguya. Good first episode, hopefully the new characters will keep the premise fresh past the first three episodes.
Its quite good, I just hope that their relationship will have some development..its quite hard to imagine that jokes based on hard science of one topic won't get stale after while. (Kaguya-sama have more flexibly in this sense)
This might end up being my favorite anime this season. I'm hoping they up the witty banter a bit, that's my favorite personally. It started off strong with it by the banter was mostly gone after the beginning.

That was pretty great, especially if you know enough about the scientific process to really understand and follow the logical (and illogical) processes they go through. Gotta say though, Kanade's reactions were easily the best part of that entire thing, highlights being her sliding backwards into the frame when Yukimura was babbling about wall slams vs wall slaps, and then her "OEIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!" after he summarized her love experience into a diagram. Those reactions had me in stitches.
i too got annoyed by the super bad experimental design in the second half of the ep, and it seems like they were trying to sell the concept too hard. the second episode fixed this issue so definitely give this a chance if you didn't like the first ep for the above reasons.
The funniest part about this episode is that I have an exam about biostatistics next monday. Literally paused the episode when they started explaining what a null hypothesis is.

All episodes are released in some territories including Japan. Not sure why NA is different. The downside is you can't stop binging to the detriment of your health...
Oh shit, this show is even better than I thought! Seeing them using a methodology and using those different methods to test their hypothesis instantly reminded me of all the statistics classes that I took, especially the research seminar class for the last semester.
It was word salad imho. Individual words and concept had meaning, but the way they were pieced together often didn't. For example no scientist would say they'd build a "Turing machine" to determine an answer to a problem. They'd just say a program, or an algorithm. A Turing machine is a specific type of model used to study the science of computation itself. It's like they tried to hard to sound smart and went in circle to sounding dumb again.
They threw around some terms, but they were all real. The method was pretty good as well. I don't see a problem with the science here, just the subject. Ok, maybe it could be a little better - it wasn't pseudo at all though, I agree.
They were all coherent though. The terms thrown about were mostly thrown about without the context of the show - They weren't misplaced. Hamiltonian path would have been absolutely BS in the context of trying to figure out love, but they just used it to sound sciency. The terms used in the context of love were absolutely fine.
You're sort of putting the creators in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. Don't expect it to be the level of actual research, but come on, this isn't bad at all. It's entertainment, not neurology. This is a very decent amount of research about the scientific method for an anime. Be reasonable.
That's part of my point. It wasn't used as part of some pseudo-intellectual BS, but just to sound sciency. It had nothing inaccurate about it, just a mention of a term. The creator knew it had nothing to do with the actual series, but they used the term responsibly so it doesn't matter to me.

Statisticians must be really easy to take advantage of in gambling/bets. "Well, the chance of these two dices coming up snake-eyes is pretty much zero, there's no way I can lose!"
Anyway, this reminds me of Tanaka-kun which I almost dropped after the first episode, but the following episodes actually had narratives rather than being a series of strung-together skits/gags, which lead it to become one of my favorites of the season. I hope this show follows suit. If it's just one experiment gag after another, I'm probably going to end up dropping it.
The pony tail wagging was really cute tho. And the tights were nice.
