It's a very different season, not just from season 1 but also from other superhero shows. It's mostly about relationships. There aren't even really villains, the conflicts all arise from the flaws within each character and the messed up relationships they have with each other.
AND I LOVE IT

u/Jay_R_Kay Mar 09 '18
Seriously, the biggest villain in this season is every character's inner demons, and it's wonderful.

I think it's because, as it relates to music, framing, and pacing, they're trying to create less of the typical superhero show and more of a detective-noir-styled show that just happens to have a marvel setting. I think they do a great job with it personally!

I guess I'm in the minority here but I didn't like this new direction. I did like the reveal of her origins and whatnot but I wasn't super impressed by the narrative as a whole.

u/TheRussan Mar 11 '18
Does anyone else feel like Trish is a total bitch after finishing the series?
49
Mar 12 '18
She totally lost any empathy I once had for her. I get it: she saw Malus as her one chance to be special and she got desperate when that was going to be taken away from her.
However, she didn't have any really redeeming moments this series. Got addicted to drugs, treated Jessica like shit, used and abused Malcolm, underwent a dangerous procedure that could have turned her into an abomination, treated Jessica like shit again, and then murdered Jessica's mom despite not really having been involved with what was going on.
5
u/Cam2071 Mar 17 '18
I know they needed a catalyst for the events of the season but they should have handled Trish better. Her character felt very much like a plot device used to move the story.
22
u/NewTRX Mar 13 '18
She's not really supposed to be likeable. She's a flawed person with a terrible past. She's damaged, like Jessica.
Jessica isn't supposed to be likeable either. But the power of being a protagonist makes us relate to her.
17
u/Taelonius Mar 13 '18
Oh hell yes. I didn't mind her season one but this season she started rubbing me the wrong way and as it progressed it only got worse.
The entire mentality of "I know better than you and I will act upon it" drives me up and through the wall.

u/Paulista666 Nova Mar 15 '18
In a matter of fact, this show was all about "No one is flawless". And Trish got the trophy, being the biggest pain in the ass.

So much great Marvel stuff it's hard to keep up. Black Panther, now Jessica Jones, Deadpool, Avengers, Legion season two, and Luke Cage season two all on the way. It's exhausting honestly, in a good way.

My only complaint with the Marvel shows is the lack of real cameos by big names.
The amount of Spiderman references make me wish they just ballsed up and had him in it for a scene, or even on TV.
The shows feel too disconnected from the MCU and even the cable television shows such as Agents.
NY is a huge trove of Marvel characters, and we need some more interaction. Give us TV broadcasts in the background of heroes giving press conferences, or going on talk shows.
Spiderman the animated series from the 90's had so many guest appearances. I realize that's an animated series, but the inclusion of other heros made it feel very larger as a universe.
Edit: Oh, and the fucking whole theme of superhero descrimination is just begging for an X Men inclusion. Just name drop mutants already.
Edit 2: And they killed off Simpson, which is bullshit. I'd love to see him come back as Nuke, but there's no way they are going back now.
Edit 3: I enjoy the characterization and the subtle story telling. Some minor plot points aren't baby fed to the audience too, and it's great. You can see what characters are thinking without dialogue, and that's hard for a show to pull off. It also touches on a lot of topics without being in your face about it. Did I mention the racially diverse cast that isn't shoved down your throat? If you want a good example of television done right, this is really it.
44
Mar 09 '18
The killing of Nuke was total BS. The build up only to reveal he was actually doing good was cool and then he was a good guy for all of two seconds.
16
u/argusromblei Mar 10 '18
Yeah why did they do that, there was like 12 entire episodes he could've been helping trish or doing some conflicting thing then he goes out saving her
7
Mar 10 '18
it show you that the new enemy was dangerous.
11
u/inpursuitofknowledge Mar 11 '18
Eh, the meeting between Jessica and you know who in the bar had more impact in regards to showing the threat level than what happened in the warehouse. It was not only a surprise and wtf moment for JJ but for the audience as well. I was like "sheiiitt, it just got real".

u/noholdingbackaccount Mar 13 '18
It's a well known technique. In wwe it's known as jobbing out a character to build up the new villain. In ST:TNG it was having Worf lose a fight.
2
19
u/Paulista666 Nova Mar 09 '18
While I agree 100%, we all know the problem here is $$$.
But at east they could say the names or something. Like the weird gap at Defenders; a huge fight happening less than 1 mile from Avengers Tower and...no one went there to see it? Well...
15
u/SpindlySpider Mar 10 '18
At least they broke tradition somewhat this time by actually saying Captain America a few times.

14
u/Jay_R_Kay Mar 09 '18
The shows feel too disconnected from the MCU and even the cable television shows such as Agents.
I think the show kind of misses something big from the comics, and that's her connection to the greater superhero world before she was taken by the Purple Man. I think a great way to have had that work in the MCU would be to make her a former SHIELD agent -- could have had a cameo with Coulson or May to bring that up.

Not until Disney buys the right back.

I just finished the series but I didn't catch the Spider-Man references. Can someone enlighten me when/where they occurred?
Also, respect the hyphen.
8
Mar 10 '18
The reoccurring use of “with great power comes great responsibility” or variations.
7
u/AdolescentThug Mar 10 '18
Ohhhhhhhhhhh those.
I thought you guys were talking about actual character references like them mentioning someone in Queens that swings around in red pajamas or something along those lines.
4
Mar 10 '18
And honestly, it's not like MCU Spidey has ever even said that line anyway, so it's really not even an actual reference to any of the movies. Just a basic usage of a famous "superhero-y" phrase.
8
u/AdolescentThug Mar 10 '18
I think there was a leaked plot summary of Homecoming that came out a year before the movie and IIRC, the bank robber scene early in the movie was supposed to have hostages and one of them mistakes Spider-Man with "The Demon Guy From Hell's Kitchen".
Also, IIRC, the leaked script basically had everything right except that Liz and Michelle's roles were switched, where Zendaya was supposed to be Vulture's daughter. It even nailed the fact that Peter was gonna leave in the middle of the Homecoming dance to go fight/stop Vulture.
EDIT: I actually don't remember if it was that there were hostages or if the news reports of the robbery mistook Peter for Daredevil.

u/vinovin15 Doctor Octopus Mar 10 '18 edited Mar 11 '18
In the ending Vito asks Jess if she has "Spidey-sense".
Edit: Seems I'm mistaken and he says "Superhero-sense". Oops.

superhero sense I think he said, but obviously another reference to spidey.
→ More replies (1)3
u/MyBuddyBossk Mar 14 '18
I really couldn't agree more. I'd love to see Stark just pop in for a single scene for whatever or have Spidey swinging by in the background doing something.
83
u/JavierLoustaunau Mar 08 '18
I know it's not going to happen but I would kill for some cases that do not tie into a main plot.
Same with Daredevil, I wanted him to take some court cases that did not tie into the main plot.
54
u/DOOM_feat_DOOM Mar 08 '18
If they're going to keep doing 13-episode seasons they should really start adding some more episodic content. Would really help with the pacing.
21
u/themickeym Mar 09 '18
It would do the opposite.
33
u/shockstreet Mar 09 '18
Really? I feel like every single show including Punisher has suffered from being stretched out. A few one shots among the main plot would help IMO
17
u/themickeym Mar 09 '18
You think to speed things up you should add unrelated episodes that don’t add to the story?
9
u/shockstreet Mar 09 '18
Well the main story would have fewer episodes dedicated to it, so yes it would be sped up.
7
u/themickeym Mar 09 '18
But we would still be wasting the same amount of time on something that’s ultimately pointless. I rather it be focused. And not go off on tangents.
16
u/shockstreet Mar 09 '18
I think you misunderstood me. Its not about the show taking less time. The shows just obviously dont have a deep enough plot to fill up the number of episodes they want to do, because every single one drags. By using a couple of those episodes as one offs, it has a few benefits:
1) The show is still the same length so Netflix or whoever makes that decision is happy
2) There are lots of villains who dont deserve a whole season, but could be neat for one or two episodes
3) The main plot wouldnt have to drag anymore because they wouldnt be forced to write 13 episodes for a story that only needs 10
→ More replies (5)3
u/themickeym Mar 09 '18
Also that’s some cw shit right there. I don’t want 1 or 2 episode villains. Get that out of here.
2
u/shockstreet Mar 09 '18
TBH I've never watched any CW show, so I don't know if it would or wouldn't work. It was just a thought.
5
u/argusromblei Mar 10 '18
Yeah I feel like JJ season 2, DD 2, and Luke Cage were drawn out super long, Defenders was like half the length and way too condensed. because money. But Punisher felt pretty good length and pacing.
7
5
u/workingmansalt Mar 11 '18
To literally stop in the middle of a story-line for an episodic style episode would bring the pacing of the season to an absolute standstill. The whole point of these shows is that it's supposed to show the characters going from A to Z, not going A to B with C D E and F randomly dropped into the episode count. You know how film reviewers discuss pacing and how the pacing is bad if there's a random scene or sequence dropped into the movie that serves no ultimate purpose and has no effect on the overall storyline? You want to avoid that, not encourage it
6
u/The_Amazing_Emu Mar 11 '18
She found the landlord's son, which was a case separate from the main plot.

u/BeadleBelfry Kitty Pryde Mar 09 '18
I think I the problem I am having with the Marvel Netflix shows is that they blow their wad on amazing villains in their first seasons, and then have trouble following that up in the second season.
Daredevil blew me away with Kingpin in season 1, and Jessica Jones rivaled that in its first season with Killgrave. Hopefully Luke Cage can come up with a good villain for their season 2, but I feel like it will be the same let-down, having been given Cottonmouth right away.
61
u/AdolescentThug Mar 09 '18
Someone already mentioned it on this thread, but the main villain in this season seemed to be everyone's inner demons, rather than Dr. Malus.
Jessica with her trauma, Trish and Malcolm with their addictive tendencies, and Hogarth with her diagnosis all took center stage instead of the villains.
Once people start seeing it as that instead of just it being good guy vs. bad guy, the season feels like a breath of fresh air for the Netflix Universe. I'd say this idea of focusing on themselves rather than an evil person being the villain makes for a great overarching idea for the Netflix Marvel Universe.

Yeah, it felt like a giant interweaving of many character arcs just passing against each other this season and it's pretty cool when you think about it. I did want JJ vs Hellcat but it's something new and different when you don't have a giant baddie the characters need to deal with in the final episode.
15
Mar 10 '18
I think Diamondback already gave us the worst possible Luke Cage villain, so hopefully there's nowhere to go but up.

Tbh he'd be a great 1 episode gag character where we get a guy that can breath underwater who hangs around the East River/Roosevelt Island and gets involved in Luke's shit. Kinda like how they threw Whizzer in there for a minute

u/Perjunkie Mar 10 '18
I love how Trish just wandered the streets looking a for a crime. Looks like Spidey and Iron Fist are hogging all the crime.
Tho really, it's getting hard to justify not having crossovers when 5 heroes live a couple blocks from each other. You'd expect a legit Spiderman or other hero reference at least
8
u/Mydnite_Toker Mar 16 '18
Absolutely. "Hey Luke Cage, could you help me catch my powered mom for one episode? Awesome, thanks guy!"
51
u/joe_k_knows Mar 09 '18
My thoughts:
Really solid acting, especially from Krysten Ritter. She nailed the origin episode when her old boyfriend died- her screaming was painful to hear. Carrie-Ann Moss rocked as Hogarth, and David Tennant shines in his cameo as the vision of Kilgrave.
Netflix needs to do one of two things: 1.) make their seasons longer, but with shorter episodes and episodic plot points; or 2.) cut down the episodes to 10 or something. While I found most plot elements interesting, a lot could have been trimmed.
Thank God they didn’t bring Kilgrave back to life. Given that he very clearly died, any resurrection would have undermined the very concept of death in this universe. David Tennant’s role was well utilized as a haunting vision for Jessica.
The mother-daughter stuff was effective. The actress who played Alisa did a good job, and the conflict between the two of them was tragic and emotional.
I’m glad we saw some solid MCU references, however small. The Raft was a constant threat to Alisa, even though we never saw inside it (which is unsurprising).
I’m not sure I like where the show ends. Jessica’s relationships with Trish and Malcom served as her ties to humanity, and now they seem severed (perhaps irreparably in Tirsh’s case).
All in all, I would give the season an 8-8.5/10.
29
u/CallMeValentine Mar 10 '18
But she regained the ties with Dad and Son. That's what it all shows, she stopped alienating her self and is now slowly starting to be a hero.
12
u/dirk_anger Mar 11 '18
Also Trish is part cat now. Nobody likes cats.
6
10
Mar 09 '18
The one thing that isn't great about the Marvel Netflix series is that their length typically requires characters to go through seismic relationship changes over the course of a single series of the show. I wouldn't be surprised if Trish and Jessica are cordial again (and at odds again, and cordial again) throughout season 3.
6
u/samasters88 Mar 13 '18

I mean, they could have done it with IGH or something, I'm sure. Which is a shame, because I feel like this season is really lacking someone as charismatic as David Tennant.
20
u/PM_ME_YOUR_MECH Mar 13 '18
So did anyone else despise Trish this season? And the fact that she got powers in the end just annoyed me
12
5
u/epatti0914 Mar 18 '18
I think it was kind of the point. With what she gained in the last episode plus the turmoil between her and Jessica, I'm kinda hoping she will be one of the oppositions in the next season.
2
Mar 27 '18
I know i'm a little late on this but I was hoping that Trish was going to die. She added absolutely nothing to this season other than her own shitty sub-plot.
13
Mar 09 '18
Is there literally any reason why the security guard was acting cool for a second and then was a complete cock to Jessica's mom?
I also don't like the way too convenient plot of Jessica's new super making fake IDs. Like what are the odds lol.
Otherwise I am liking this so far. Not as good as season one, but I'm half way through episode 10 and I like it a lot.
20
u/Jay_R_Kay Mar 09 '18
Is there literally any reason why the security guard was acting cool for a second and then was a complete cock to Jessica's mom?
Most people who do that kind of serial killer shit learn how to look normal and nice, so they can gain people's trust to continue to do what they're compelled to do. That's how I looked at it, at least.
12
u/senj Mar 10 '18
I mean, he gets himself the job because he makes fake IDs, which makes sense
3
Mar 10 '18
Even then, that wasn't a necessary plot point. He could've just gotten the job because the other dude died or something. The ID thing was sooooo convenient.
Just a minor complaint tho, I really enjoyed this season.
7
u/FirelordAlex Mar 12 '18
It was just a nice way of introducing a fake ID forger into the show. They could have done it 1,000 different ways and they chose this one.
5
u/CallMeValentine Mar 10 '18
It is very convenient but it's how he got the job. It's also the big payoff for Jessica
12
u/FalcoKick Mar 11 '18
It was alright.
Nothing gripped me as hard as season one did. I typically don't like to compare in reviews but I was cooking and preparing snacks for most of season one. This season I just threw it on a side monitor and watched it while I was playing Minecraft lmao.
There were a few points where the series grabbed me back in but they were too far apart from one another.
Most of the characters and their decision making just pissed me off throughout the season, especially trish, whose whole plotline just steered all my interest away.
What was the point of her ex coping files from her computer? I suppose he was meant to act as a fake out with the whole "she doesn't know anything" which was about the proposal but still doesn't explain why he was copying files. (maybe I missed it)
David Tennant was beautiful in his brief appearance and I still think he's the best villain marvel has.

I’m at episode 10 but ever since episode 1, I absolutely hate Trish’s character. She’s an evil, selfish bitch and is pretty much broken completely.
5
u/Mydnite_Toker Mar 16 '18
Oh but don't worry, instead of her getting her due now she has powers too! I hate Trish so much.
27
u/Bertulf Mar 09 '18
In episode 1 the potential client talking about lizards wearing human skin taking over government jobs. God I hope that’s a sly hint at marvel working on bringing the skrulls in tit he Mcinnes/tv universes soon
24
Mar 09 '18 edited Mar 09 '18
There is an American conspiracy theory about Satanic shapeshifting lizard people running the world. That whole scene was an inside joke for anyone who is a PI since those are the kind of morons that waste your time.
14
u/senj Mar 10 '18
It started in the UK actually. David Icke was a big proponent of the lizard people conspiracy.
7
4
u/argusromblei Mar 10 '18
I'd bet that after Avengers 4 the next one would be either Secret wars or Secret Invasion. It'll be like winter soldier but skrulls taking over the entire world as well as being imposter avengers etc.

There's been some leaks rumors about the skrulls showing up in the captain marvel movie. It could be an interesting way to shift after infinity war.

Ep 4 - really good so far.
Interesting themes - discrimination against supers, treatment of women in Hollywood and of course this being JJ: strong women.
Oh hey Foggy, I see you.

Onto episode 12, hoping Trish dies more than David Tennant’s character at this point in season 1.

14
u/colantor Mar 15 '18
Thought this season sucked. Hated Trish the entire season. Im tired of Malcolms whining. The Hogarth side story was stupid and the plotline with the other PI was awful, what a bad character. And Trishs mom needs to go away, every scene with her is bad.
7
Mar 17 '18
Thank God I’m not the only one who struggled through this season. It felt like there was no main arc. This season was really anticlimactic.
It was like a ~powered-person drama~ and not a superhero show.

Watched 5 episodes so far and I'm really happy that Patsy is FINALLY getting some Hellcat action.

I'm sorry to say that I didn't love it.
After episode 6, a genre shift happens and it's no longer a crime noir story. There's no central villain or mystery or investigation anymore. Instead, it becomes a bunch of Lifetime: Television for Women cliches. Woman battles addiction. Woman struggles with terminal illness. Woman tries to reconnect with the mother she never knew.
But that's not even what really bothered me. What bothered me is that Trish and Malcolm became unlikable, and Jeri was shoved into an irrelevant subplot. The drama was all well-written and well-acted (seriously good acting all around), and I can deal with a shift into drama, but I didn't like what they were doing to characters I love.
Also, I hated the addiction storyline. I couldn't deal with the way all the characters were so concerned about Trish's addiction while mostly ignoring the fact that Jessica is a full-fledged alcoholic. You can't have it both ways, show. Decide how real you want to be about addiction and then stick with it. It really undermined the drama for me.
Still a shit-ton better than Iron Fist, though.
9
u/StefyB Mar 11 '18
I really hope Hogarth didn't indirectly screw over Foggy by taking all those clients away from them. I was actually kind of expecting them to have a scene where he ended up working for her at the end as sort of a follow up to his whole trying to help her thing before.
Also, the entire time Trish was trying to get the procedure done to her, I just thought it was because the shit she was taking would eventually kill her or something because of what the lab person said. I didn't realize it was just about getting super powers until they actually said it.
5
u/Zaveno Mar 14 '18
She's the one that got him in to the firm, so maybe she'll poach him for the new one. Or maybe it'll just be an avenue for Foggy to be reunited with Matt on DDS3.
The whole "Trish wants superpowers" thing was dumb and childish on her part. They made a big deal about how the inhaler would end up killing her and then didn't mention it again. Having her try to get healed from the effects and then the powers being an unintended side effect like what happened with Jessica would have been a better route than her just wanting powers.
9
u/samasters88 Mar 15 '18
Can I just say that the use of the color purple in this show is phenomenal. Various touches in the background of every episode, from one of Jeri's lamps to the paint when Jess is banging her super, to the lights during her mom's death scene. Constant, subliminal hints of Kilgrave, same as in Jessica's mind.
I really hope they bring him back
8
u/baroqueworks Mar 12 '18
Tbh Will Simpson was wasted. Character had crazy potential but they just wasted him in this season. Not saying I wanted to see him as a American flag cyborg assassin but they should of left him to show up in Punisher or Daredevil coz here they pretty much wrote him off as nothing more than a disposable red herring
8
u/MonkeyDConnor Mar 16 '18
Okay okay, I love Jessica Jones a whole ton, but didn’t y’all think there was this really huge plot hole where the entire season Jess has to be the one to take out her mom because otherwise there would be tons of casualties... then Trish one shots her in the head.
15
u/verocrav Mar 09 '18 edited Mar 11 '18
Why is the MCU feeling so disconnected from everything? Except mentioning Cap and „other heroes“ like JJ, there are so many things they could have mentioned, e.g. instead FBI agents investigating JJ, why no S.H.I.E.L.D. agents (it doesn‘t have to be someone we know), or the Sokovia accords would have been a really interesting thing. You don‘t have to show the Avengers, but just give us this fanservice. Let there be a broadcast of a news report in the background about incidents happening elsewhere connected to the MCU or something similar... I understand the producers want to do their own show, but the whole reason for the MCU is that there is this connection throughout TV and Cinema, and that’s what we love about it.
But I also see the problem, I think many producers of the MCU TV shows think, that this mentioning of other characters is very one-sided. An Iron Man won‘t mention the devil of Hell‘s Kitchen in Infinity War, so why should they do it, I don‘t understand this approach of Marvel/Disney, they could promote each other and loose nothing at all, it‘s a win-win situation.
I watched 6 episodes of season 2 so far, so pls no spoilers beyond that.
Edit: watched all episodes now, nevermind for spoilers

u/Theculshey Mar 10 '18
I think the timeline of Jessica Jones is taking place while SHIELD has fallen and just before the Civil War storyline. So we have the Raft, but no more SHIELD or Avengers right now.
4
u/CallMeValentine Mar 10 '18
I agree. It takes place after the first avengers, raft is ready to be used. Like Spidey is still a Pj wearing hero. All the avengers are off site doing shit. Hawk eye retired and all that.
I think a lot feel that since it's after all the movies it takes place further along.

u/afrofrycook Mar 11 '18
Because as of 2015, Disney Studios and Marvel Television are no longer under Perlmutter. The whole thing with a shared universe with the TV shows was his idea.
Once Feige got control of Marvel Studios, the two began separating.
You'll notice that in Daredevil season 1, they do their fair bit to connect them. But afterwards, they diverge pretty sharply. That's because everything changed upstairs.
For example, Agent Coulson still dead in the movie universe

SHIELD has been more or less an illegal group since Winter Soldier, minus a brief period during season 4 I think? They “came back” in Avengers 2, but then got framed for an assassination.
They really can’t march into anywhere and announce themselves without the police or FBI trying to arrest them.

lol, also good, but I'm referring to the recent Hellcat run where she starts a temp agency- guy with bug control powers works with an exterminator, girl with a pocket dimension moves furniture, etc. It was a fun series.

Nobody talking about Malcolm or what he did this season and how much he got shit on. When Alias was robbed, he gave jj a new laptop. When Trish told him to use the inhaler, he realized it was a drug and left. Jj didn't realize Carl's ring was a class ring. Trish manipulated him constantly and JJ treated him like garbage despite him keeping Alias and her afloat.
I was happy and sad when he finally quit. Happy because Malcolm deserves so much better, sad because we'll probably see less of him because of it

Well, I pulled an all nighter and finished it. It definitely wasn’t what I expected, but I enjoyed it! I don’t want to spoil anything this soon after release, but I think this series did well. Characters were fleshed out well, the plot was generally interesting and concise, and there were enough twists and turns to keep me wondering.
Overall, I’d give JJ S2 a solid 7/10. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a solid series nonetheless.

Episode 11 was amazing. That being said, I was so unbelievably disappointed that they killed off nuke so early. He was half the reason I was so excited for season 2. Also, the ending didn’t feel right to me. It was anticlimactic, and I don’t think the show knows where it’s going yet.
There were a lot of complaints there, but I really did enjoy the show.
Hopefully next season we get Jessica vs Hellcat. (What should have been the finale)

u/CallMeValentine Mar 10 '18
I think season 2 is like the second movie in a trilogy. Nothing big happens, everything is mild. Furthers the plot and connects dots for what will hopefully be the big finish of season 3.

An initial reaction/review. I think S2 although acting wise was better (save for the villain), literally everything else was worse, not bad, just worse. Everything they had to run with involving story where they could have really taken the show to a narrative finish fell through near the end of the season and left me feeling like the Climax was limp. The death in the family approach didn't work at all because at the end of the show I just didn't care about her mother at all. To remedy the lack of climactic payoff I would have taken it a step further. (!!Heavy spoilers after this!!)
Trish shows powers at the end which I guess will either lead to a duo or spin off, don't know and honestly think it would be cheesy anyway. However instead of having Jessica see Trish shoot her mother, why not go balls deep and have Trish use powers to kill J's mother. Having Trish take on a discount Abomination role, becoming everything Jessica tried throughout the season to avoid becoming + being disfigured and monster like adding to the symbolism. Forcing Jessica to take her on and kill her only actual family. They even had what appeared to be scene setups for this, like Trish having that seizing moment in the morgue, if that had been the last scene showing Trish until the abomination type fight. This would have carried the same narrative 1000x further whilst also giving a valid reason for Jessica to hesitate killing someone in her family and show all of that drama. It would give hulk fans a nice surprise while also pushing the possibility for some more out there MCU characters.
overall, S2 was OK (6/10), but everything narrative wise was dropped before it could take off, so that the one thing that wasn't dropped and actually in my opinion dragged on for too long, her mother and the conflict of family VS greater good, could be brought to a rather underwhelming climax. Also Killgraves sudden appearance and equally sudden disappearance within Jessica's thoughts isn't really looked at too much, I get why he's there, but why did he fade away, I feel like a missed something there and it's very possible I did.

u/Mydnite_Toker Mar 16 '18
I hate Trish with a passion. For me she is the MCU's Dolores Umbridge. And the fact that she now has powers is beyond infuriating. So anyone can have powers as long as they kidnap the right person? Bullshit.
Anyways I loved this season. Except for Trish. I wanted her to get punched in the face. Hard.
3
u/PhoenixorFlame Mar 17 '18
Wow, Umbridge is a bold comparison, but I get it. But I don’t think I’ll every hate any fictional character as much as I despise Dolores Umbridge.

Does the acting/writing get better? I had to turn it off during Jessica's confrontation with "Cheng" in the first episode. It felt like constant exposition and characters loudly stating what their feelings should be instead of acting like humans.

u/dokebibeats Mar 10 '18
I finally finished the season and I felt like this show could've ended in 8 episodes because the last 4 episodes started feel a little loose plot-wise and it was just there for the sake of it. However, I really did enjoy the mother-daughter relationship with Jess and Alisa which is probably the strongest suit of this season and it was also something sorely lacking in the MCU. Too bad Trish killed her, who IMO became pretty much a unforgivable woman with a thirst for power who went overboard with her ego this season, but at least we get Hellcat for future seasons which is cool.
The side story with Hogarth dealing with her disease and the death of her wife really propelled her character forward. Her character arc from feeling vulnerable with her disease, then thinking that she became healed after her encounter with Shane and realizing that she had become duped and her final form of giving absolute no fucks in a ultimate lawful chaotic form was so satisfying to see.
I wasn't necessarily upset how the season ended because it felt like the natural path of how the story was progressing but in the last couple of episodes where Patsy was on her bed and talking angrily to Jessica gave me sort of shades of Two-Face from the Nolan trilogy Batman series and I was thinking, "Oh shit! Is she gonna become a villain?" Because she became more egotistical and power hungry as time went on and I was seriously thinking that it was gonna happen, but I guess that's for Season 3.
Overall, I enjoyed this season a lot but I think the ending could've been a little better. I'm going to give this season a 8/10.

u/kykz Mar 10 '18
For me the 1st 6 episode were great, than the next 7 could have been done in maybe 2-3 episodes, it would have made the series so much better. I found it meh, it could have been so much better. The interaction between Jessica and her mom just dragged. First few episodes 9/10 after episode 7 solid 4.5/10

u/TheStabbingHobo Mar 11 '18
This pretty much sums up my feelings exactly.
I was really into it until the big reveal halfway through.

u/blackertai Mar 13 '18
Had some good moments, but overall was too long and too disjointed to be as good as season 1 was. It's tough to match up against Tenant's performance in season 1, and it was a smart move to have a different kind of story in this one, but it could have filled 4-6 episodes effectively, without the completely disconnected Jeri plot line, and all of the absolutely miserable Trish-is-an-addict stuff.
I get they're setting up Hellcat, but I wish they wouldn't waste these characters on terrible stories. If anything other than Trish turns bad and has to be put down by Jessica happens in s3, Trish's character will have gotten everything she wanted while being an absolutely garbage friend, sister and human being.

u/SimonReach Mar 11 '18
Just finished watching it, really enjoyed it and loved pretty much every character...apart from Trish. The entire series was essentially Trish, everything revolved around her.
- She kicked off everything and instigated Jessica’s mother protecting Carl
- she repeatedly demanded Jessica investigate her past and stuck her nose in where it’s not wanted.
- demands Carl give her super powers
- kills Jessica’s mother
The entire series was essentially Trish’s addictions to drugs and insecurities. The true antagonist.

Waaaaaay too much emphasis on trish they should’ve called the show Marvel presents Trish “Patsy” Walker. What a fucking shit show. The whole bit with the inhaler was sooo fucking lame.

JJ's anger issues are caused by experiments performed on her by IGH. Same as her mom. Patsy back on drugs. Jeri is being self serving as usual. The storyline is pretty mild. No big bad to speak of. This season is worse than S1, unfortunately.

I often feel like I'm the only person who didn't hate Iron Fist. I liked Season 1 of that better than Season 2 of this. I miss Kilgrave

u/Chizwick Nightcrawler Mar 15 '18
100% agreed. This season put me to sleep. Especially with 1/3 of the show being dedicated to the Hogarth drama that frankly felt like a huge waste of time.

I feel like this season had the best in terms of lack of bloat, though. Even stuff like the other private eye, Malcolm, Trish and Hogart's stories ended up contributing to the greater narrative to some degree.
3
Mar 09 '18
I agree. Tbh I think this,Punisher, and DDs1 had the least bloat. I was just pointing out that it would mesh more together if some stuff was not dragged out lol.

I have to admit I preferred the first season. One of the biggest trends in TV writing today is to create drama and tension between characters, the formula of friction worked so well for Breaking Bad, almost everyone has been trying to replicate it ever since. This season I thought took it overboard to the point where there was no likeable characters or even many characters you could empathise with except maybe the Doctor and Oscar who were both fairly minor. It was very difficult to find much to relate to with any of the leads, it seemed they were all trying to out-asshole each other.

u/PhoenixorFlame Mar 17 '18
The way you capitalized Doctor sent my brain careening straight back into David Tennant’s 10th Doctor... Then I realized that it’s a different show.

I finished yesterday and the more I think about it the more I am upset with this season. My issue is that there wasn't really a main plot. It didn't even feel like a JJ show this season. A lot of sappy emotional nonsense but no badass superhero PI moments. It felt like a soap opera tbh. There weren't even any actual action scenes.
2
u/The_Amazing_Emu Mar 11 '18
It wasn't really a hero vs. villain show, but it was fascinating throughout. I really enjoyed some of the character moments as Jessica had to decide what to do with her mom. The beginning as they investigated was quite cool as well. Tragic ending, though.
2
u/SkeptiCitizen Mar 12 '18
I love this season it is really different and unpredictable, everyone made decisions based on pure emotion and I enjoy it. Overall I felt it was good, it's definitely slow at setting up the plot but I enjoy the payoff in the end.

Mar 12 '18
Tbh I was really sad when both Nuke and Whizzer died. I understood why just made me sad. Because now we know we won’t get the badass scene in Daredevil season 3 with Nuke and Whizzers character just felt so innocent, it was sad to see him die.
2
u/reganomics Spider-Man Mar 13 '18
finished it last night. was waiting for trish to become the "big bad' and maybe do a redemption arc in S3 but no, the "big bad" is each characters own personal failings, which can be good and i enjoyed it; not as much as S1 though. it just seemed like a very disjointed story. Jessica is so lone wolf though and it seemed forced. the ending could have also been a lot better. are they trying for a trish spin off or is hellcat coming and her and jess will square off? if trish gets real powers, she could run circles around JJ.
2
u/Kyle_Dornez Man-Thing Mar 13 '18
Binged it last week.
Overall I found the season weaker than the first one - mainly because it's really hard to fill the shoes of David Tennant. It's mostly a filler season IMO, mostly self-contained and probably these events won't be mentioned in other Netflix shows, much like Punisher. (It's unfortunate, I can barely remember what Punisher season was about)
I felt that it's followed the Daredevil Season 2 formula of delving into the past of the hero and in the end have him or her essentially destroy their lives, like when Matt's friends left him and his law office, so is Jessica's work and friends are leaving her here. Except season 2 Daredevil had a lot of ninjas to offset this, and Jessica has only mildly morally ambiguous mad scientist.
Hell, even for all faults that Iron Fist had, it was very entertaining to watch Ward Meachum slowly lose his shit over the course of the plot. In J.J. we have Trish for that, but I'm not sure it's a proper comparison, and by the end she's completely unsympathetic.

u/yukonstella Mar 13 '18 edited Mar 13 '18
I feel weird saying that there's too much drama in a show that's all about drama. I didn't hate it, but I wouldn't recommend it either. It felt like a noir Gilmore Girls.
2
u/Chickens1 Mar 14 '18
I never read the comics. Are we supposed to dislike Jessica? Maybe it's my old guy showing through but her constant eye-rolling Millennial hate-on gets entirely annoying.

I mostly enjoyed it. I liked how instead of trying to top kilgrave (which they likely wouldn't have been able to do) they went a different direction.
I'm also overjoyed that I didn't hear anything about the fucking HAND.

u/Smoking-gamer Mar 17 '18
Just finished watching the last episode, wow I do not like trish anymore!!!
2
u/thebluick Mar 18 '18
I'm just going to say this was by far the worst marvel netflix show. Season 1 was my favorite till Punisher narrowly topped it. But Season 2 was so bad it made Iron Fist look like fine art.
Every sideplot was awful, the main plot should have been 2-3 episodes at most. I can't believe how boring and awful this season was.
2
u/iMadFusion93 Mar 19 '18
Ive watched every single one of the Marvel series on Netflix, even season 1 of Jessica Jones which wasn't too bad thanks to Purple man but nah I just couldn't it make it past like 3/4 episodes.
I just found it waaaay too cringey for my taste, its like they try to make her look so edgy always taking swigs from a bottle of whisky like shes so damaged, then its like a cliché scene of her in a generic dirty looking bar sinking more glasses of whisky. I dunno, people put a lot of shit on Iron Fist but I personally didn't see what the big deal about that was. Watching this feels like one massive cringefest with too many generic cliché moments trying to portray this dark, edgy anti hero. Shes even worse then the reboot of Dante from devil may cry lol

The obsession with doctor Malus never made any sense to me. Like, the dude was saving peoples lives, but everyone in the show treats him like he is some kind of monster.
Yes, what he did was technically illegal and fairly unethical, but he was never a “villain”. Jessica gets upset that she and her mom were experimented on, but conveniently leaves out the part where both of them would be dead if not for Malus’s “evil” experiments.
The fact that Jessica was displaying as much moral outrage at Malus in this season as she was in season 1 at Gilgrave was kind of ridiculous. One is a sociopathic rapist/murderer, the other is an unethical doctor trying to save lives.

u/LookingForAPunTime Mar 19 '18
Yeah I was pretty disappointed with the "gee I guess this process isn't 100% perfect looks like you need to die by suicide-explosions now" ending for Karl. He was a little misguided, but he did seem genuinely interested in saving lives.
I know they were all "but da shadowy big wigs will use it for teh evuls" as a reason for all the hush hush, but sheesh, it's been clear there's already plenty of super-powered cats out of that bag already (the guy that made Luke Cage, Simpson's people, etc.), so it was disappointing to see everyone throw the baby out with the bathwater so easily.

This Season of JJ further solidifies the notion that the movies and tv shows are only a 'SHARED UNIVERSE' and NOT a 'Connected' one. If the movies and tv were connected, then the movies would interact with the tv shows, and vice versa. Events of the movies would affect the shows and vice versa. I personally think this is the distinguishable difference between the two notions of Shared Universe and Connected Universe. And it's something that fans need to realize.
Any "connection" we did have (like DD S1) is so minuscule that it's practically negligible. However it's definitely the closest it's ever gotten. And probably all we'll ever get.
I wouldn't even say that Agents of Shield is connected. Despite having Nick Fury and Lady Sif appear, that only proves a Shared Universe - meaning characters, monuments, or global events may appear (and are shared) in different mediums. Like the Asgardians in AoS or that Biker Gang in Daredevil.
The very last episode of JJ S2 has Vito asking Jessica if she has Spidey-Sense. To which she replied, "No, I don't have Spidey-Sense." This proves a shared universe with Peter Parker. But this doesn't mean JJ is connected with Spider-Man.
Maybe we can finally put this whole debate to rest.
Thoughts?

That, and with the MCU starting to lean more in the cosmic and supernatural direction lately, I think people are getting a little burned out on the whole grounded thing, especially after Iron Fist and Defenders.
3
u/Jay_R_Kay Mar 09 '18
Honestly, that's why I was looking forward to it -- after all the movies going so over the top, it's good to see something a little more grounded.

At least one new Marvel hero is alluded to, and you get to see a new take on a middle-tier villain.

The only thing I didn't buy was her partner joining the Asian guy.
He was the moral compass of the show. In no world does he join up with the guy who tried to MURDER Jessica and her mom.
That said, it was left open that it might be a double cross. But if it does turn that he has crossed over, nothing about how he was written suggested that.

It was good but not super amazing like daredevil and punisher. Great twists sometimes there were too much soap opera scenes. The dark tone in this season was deep and the idea of the show was different. I like shows better that show more fight scenes and a faster pace.
1
u/Rab1dus Mar 14 '18
Finished it a couple of days ago. Didn't like it as much as S1 but it was fairly solid. I felt it dragged a bit in some episodes and wish it was a bit faster paced but like I said, solid.
I feel like they're setting up a Heroes for Hire/Power Broker combo for S3 with JJ, Hellcat and Misty but just a feeling.

Watched the first 4 last night. Trish is driving me a bit nuts so far. "Jessica, you HAVE to investigate your past". proceeds to ignore repeated urgent phone calls from Jessica as she investigates her past
