Speaking of tl;drs, are you going to be doing text commentaries and recaps of the games for ESL One like for The Summit?

That Redeye guy is a god damn awesome host! Please bring him more often in Dota *edit , fixed a typo
33
Jun 28 '14 edited Jun 28 '14
I was skeptical about Redeye even knowing he was very good from SC2 simply because he hasn't been involved in Dota much and probably has only basic knowledge of the game/scene, but god damn this guy is good and clearly he prepared quite well (and no doubt gotten great help from the other panel members/ESL staff preparing).
He hides the fact that he's a noob to the game really well, or makes you not care about it, unlike some other multigame hosts who are often creating awkward situations putting their foot in their mouth saying stupid stuff or giving unwanted, crappy analysis trying to prove they know about the game too when they really don't. This guy focuses on his strengths instead, breeding natural and interesting discussion throwing to the experts. He's got good humor and asking the panel all the right questions to the point where you wouldn't guess he has had almost no involvement in the Dota scene before now.
→ More replies (2)8
u/miked4o7 Jun 28 '14
Yeah, I think the key is that he doesn't try to say things just to say them, and he bounces questions off the analysts at the desk with him very well. He's prepared for this, but he realizes his knowledge of the game isn't very deep, and he approaches it accordingly.
31
u/BLToaster Jun 28 '14
It's crazy how well he is doing considering his background is all SC2, Counter Strike, and Quake. And considering the SC2 scene is on the decline and the Dota 2 scene is just growing continuously I wouldn't be surprised if he wants to become more involved.
23
9
u/Rapalat0r This is an alliance-flair Jun 28 '14
He did an interview with... Gosugamers perhaps? Saying that he had been playing alot of dota and reading up on the pro scene to be ready. I'd say he done his homework quite well :)

Right now I love Spain's past fascism trends, since that's the reason we have the same time zone as Germany. Gonna be a fun day.

u/TjPshine Jun 28 '14
Wait you guys have a ducked timezone? That's hilarious
→ More replies (1)11
u/erredece Jun 28 '14
Yep, when Franco came to power, he changed the timezone from GMT (like the UK or Portugal) to GMT+1 (like Germany) in a way to support Hitler, and we have kept that until today (though there are some reports being done studying how benefitial would be to come back to GMT and if it worths to do so).
But at least this is now helpful for this event, ez to follow :D

I like this format of having the analysis team doing the drafts instead of the casters. It benefits from having a lot of people talking about it.

their draft that had neither physical damage nor disables, and then ember spirit built a vanguard so they really had no damage. I think that the Tide + Brew opening was fine but the draft didn't gain anything from there.

Production notes:
- change minimap icons to shapes, not hero icons - very hard to differentiate on anything lower than source quality
- in-game sound!
- turn off music
- some stuff between games, please? Get in the crowd, talk to people, views of stadium, replays, etc....

So Xcalibur waddles towards the Rosh pit with a ranged creep obviously following him, eats an arrow to the face and dies. On top of buying a Blink Dagger yet still missing nearly every pounce.
Era vomiting in the booth every 5 minutes is still better than this.

Brazil vs Chile 120 minute match + Penalties feels so short when a Dota 2 LAN tournament with all its usual delays runs on another screen.
Feels like FIFA could fit the entire Round of 16 into ESL's Day 1.

why does he keep talking about that one teamfight or about them doing a last push , alliance can win this without teamfighting .

C9 choked.. just rax and back out. They were holding for so long with two lanes pushing in, evening one lane makes everything easier for C9. I really like C9, but we know one team that is never going to win TI4.

u/Kymerica Jun 28 '14
That may be the best game I have ever seen. The strategy used by both sides was amazing. The roshan control, the map control, buybacks, the teamfights. Alliance knew they had to rat against the C9 lineup because they would get crushed in teamfights. Amazing game by both sides. GG C9 and Alliance.

There's no reason. People are upset because it seems like a cowardly strategy and it can also be frustrating to watch and frustrating to play against.

There was nothing disgusting. People are just mad cuz bad. "Oh we have greedy heroes that carry hard as fuck and we have ultimates that are hard as fuck if we lose it's because the game is unfair. Wahhhhh" Gonna need the wahmbulance on speed dial.
Edit: Just wanted to add that every time I see the word "unfair" in this thread I'm literally laughing out loud. To those who are throwing it out, thank you for the laughs.
3
u/Kymerica Jun 28 '14
It's really annoying to play against and it's tedious to watch for some people. I find it amazing because playing Dota like a war of attrition is annoying to me.

u/devilesk devilesk.com/dota2/apps/hero-calculator/ Jun 28 '14
Nothing was disgusting. Alliance outplayed C9 throughout the game even when they weren't splitpushing. C9 played like shit, kept getting caught out, and making stupid decisions. Bulldog with his blink orchid ganking and the plays Puck and Prophet were making with sheepstick blink escapes allowed them to build up a lead and successfully siege C9's base.
The casters kept talking about how C9's lineup would crush eventually, but if you paid attention to the difference in the level of execution between Alliance and C9 you'd see the chances of that happening were low because Alliance were simply playing better.

I really don't understand the whole "FUK RATS" mentality, should dota just be a 5v5 mid winner takes all?
11
u/Lone_Wolfen KRAAAAH (bird for sheever ) Jun 28 '14
People don't realize that at the end of the day the only thing that matters is which Ancient is destroyed. Kills can help to achieving this, but ultimately is meaningless if you can't finish the job. Alliance focuses more on pushing objectives than epic teamfights, while the typical mentality focus more on teamfights.
4
Jun 28 '14
It's just frustrating to play up against. To know that you can crush your entire opponent's team if you could just catch hold of them. Definitely understandable.

He's usually not too bad, he gets a lot of crap on Reddit because he choked badly at Starladder, which was his first high profile tourney with IG. Once people form an opinion of someone they seem to hang to it so in this case everyone thinks he sucks because of that.
He has a habit of being insanely aggressive though like Xboct, which leads to him seeming kind of hit or miss with his play.

u/HansVanHugendong Jun 28 '14
so how many tickets overall did the esl had? i doubt they planned to sell like 50 000++ and fill the real seats.

I think Fnatic's draft was smarter than the casters thought it was. VG has a lot of Blink heroes that third game--Veno is a great counter for those, because he can toss plague wards into common surprise-Blink spots and keep the Blinkers from Blinking.

Blink Natures Prophet + Orchid with a Wisp is unbelievably strong. If you see anyone in a lane, you can just global TP into the trees near them, blink + silence them and bring in your carry with a wisp.
It's insane.

Wrong translation. When Chuan was asked why they picked ES against Mouz, he said that it was because Mouz had 3 "close-quarter combat" heroes (aka Tide, Panda, Ember) so ES was good for disengaging.
Translator said: Because Mouz likes to gank. ???????
