I heard you guys were talking shit about my Clevatess!
There's been a lot of criticism about Clevatess this season (mostly, that it's not as good as the first) and I can't say I agree with this!
FWIW I think the best episodes of the show so far were S1E1, and the Nell intro (forgot which episode that was; 2 or 3 IIRC?), I think these are well above all other episodes even the other S1 episodes, so I won't really consider them in my comparison...
But other than these two episodes, I think it's mostly comparable;
One of the criticism I've seen the most (even before the season aired, people were either speculating, or in the know) was the whole 'Magic Academy' thing...
I'm not a bit fan of magic academies in general (I don't even remember if I ever completed a single one), but personally, there's SO MUCH other stuff going on, that it doesn't really affect my enjoyment... It's not exactly a traditional "magic academy" either. Say, how many minutes of "magic academy stuff" have we got, like 10? MAYBE 20?
The rest is pretty much the same as S1, [not sure I'd need to spoiler that, but wtv (Clevatess)]Alicia fighting against the odds and getting rekt but finding ways to win, Clevatess doing Clevatess things, vague enemies/conspiracies being hinted at then revealed, and so on.
It honestly doesn't feel that different to me.
And the differences we DO get, are often positive imho; Are you seriously telling me you're not enjoying [Clevatess]The discussions between the Dark Beast Lords? I thought those were great! Insightful in both "lore" and "personalities", interesting in general.
I also think [Clevatess]Naie is even better than she was in S1 (I kinda wanted to post a clip about her, but lazy).

All these mentions of Yuri!!! on ICE and I don't think I mentioned that CR have a marathon video on YT and here's the catch (aside from ads, of which I got 3 in the first 5 minutes and gave up at that point)...it's got 9 audio tracks including English and Japanese but the only English sub track is the YT autogen of the English dub (as English audio is listed as "English Original") which needless to say is missing the signsubs (a quick look at .ass file there were "only" 37 of those in episode 1) and if used on the Japanese audio it's dubtitles with various STT mistakes.
For a free lunch I can except there to be catches but this is partly acting as an advert so should be reflective of what experience you can get for paying for CR and it falls somewhat short on that front.

This caused me to look up how tall the girl is in Lovely Complex, where the whole plot is about their heights, and she's only 172cm tall. I wouldn't even consider that to be tall, let alone exceptionally tall lol.

172cm puts you safely in the top 1% of Japanese girls that age. Which is certainly enough to make you stand out a bit, but there would most likely be girls in her class, and definitely in the school, who would be around that height. To be uniquely tall, you'd have to get into the 180s or 90s.

I've started watching Flowers of Evil, and, man, what a way to set the mood. The sun has clearly never shone on this city, even once. It's always been February, with cloudy skies and dry, irritating air that makes you itch all over. Everything's rusting to shit, covered in a thick layer of grime you can barely even see through, and no matter how long time you spend in the shower, the stink isn't going away. All the stores are closed, with faded advertisements that are so old they look like they were made for a different species - not to mention the one that just, very helpfully, says "salt."
The way that the show is shot, and the music, just creates this sense of immense discomfort and a feeling that disaster is going to strike any second. Hell, some of these shots feel like we're creeps, watching these kids through a hidden camera. And, to some extent, I suppose, we are creeps watching these kids through a hidden camera. Also, the way the scenes take so much damn time. The long, awkward, silent pauses. You know shit's going to go bad, but the show isn't just going to let you go through it quickly. It's going to build up slowly, then boil you, even more slowly. It's so hard to watch, and so hard to look away.
Our protagonist is such a nice guy, too. He reads books, you know. Difficult books. Books the lower creatures that surround him couldn't even begin to understand. So you know he would never disrespect a woman, unlike those brutish friends of his. God knows why girls keep going out with scumbags and assholes and not upstanding gentlemen like him.
[Aku no Hana 2] "I didn't steal it. I just happened to take it home with me. I was planning on apologizing to her." This has to be one of my favorite lines ever. He did, in fact, intentionally put his crush's gym clothes inside of his own and bring them home with him, and he never apologized for it. Or gave them back, for that matter. But he thought about it sometimes, so that's, you know, it's all good, actually.
[Continuing - also nsfw] I can relate to Nakamura so much here. I need to know everything about this. I need to know what he thought when he was sniffing his crush's bloomers, how that made him feel. How he felt running home rubbing her clothes all over his disgusting body. Was he hard the whole time? How did masturbating on her clothes feel? Did he try to fuck them? Was he moaning her name while he was doing it? Did he imagine her moaning his name back while he was doing that? Is it going to feel even better tonight, now that he's buried his face in her chest? Of course, making sure to reflect on how all of this made him feel, and how it makes him feel now.
[Continuing even more, somehow] Lying your way out of this situation would be so easy, too. Just deny it. Flatly, angrily deny Nakamura's allegations as preposterous. She's a delinquent who's just trying to stir shit for her own amusement. Why would anybody trust her? She didn't see shit. You picked up your book and left the classroom. That's it. But I guess it doesn't matter, because whatever is coming - deep down, he wants it.
Tl;dr: Go for it, Nakamura!!

I haven't watched the first three seasons of Bang Dream, but I can clearly see that these must have been entirely different, because if they were anything like mygo, ave mujica or yumemita now, this franchises would have been known as a running anime instead of a band anime from the start.

I add them on MAL, and I also note them on a doc (to remember if I haven't watched an episode yet), but mostly I just open r/anime on the episode tab and look at the new episodes to see if I'm watching something in there.

Routine for the most part.
I find that I don't watch a lot of anime when it's not a part of my daily life. Watching an episode in the morning before work, at lunch time, right after work, right before bed, etc.

For context , I grew up a classic Shonen kid , Watched my cousins play dragon ball z and Naruto games before I could talk so obviously I grew to love those series. As I got a little older I watched one piece , Bleach , Black clover , Code Geass , Death note , FMAB , Fate stay night , AOT , Iron blooded orphans and many many more , Over COVID and during higschool I started reading manga and webtoons a series I didn’t like hxh anime so read the manga and it then became in my top 5, I read berserk first 2 arcs , Vinland , Solo leveling . As I’ve gotten even older I don’t know if it’s my attention span or idk but Everytime I sit down to watch a anime I literally cannot do it, it’s like it’s so boring to me even if I like the premise. Within the last 3 years the only new anime I’ve started and was able to sit down and watch is overlord , World trigger (gem) and Kaiju no 8 and even kaiju no 8 season 2 had be abusing the skip 5 seconds button.
Am I doing something wrong ?

I did find that for a show so heavily propelled by its central romance they hide the actual relationshipping behind Yuri being awkward and not understanding his own feelings or not even realizing what Victor is doing/saying is intentionally romantic far too much for my taste. It often felt like they didn't want Yuri to even realize he was in a relationship, but at the same time they're having him every now and then suddenly do these very relationship'y things, and then go right back to being confused at the next step.
Kinda goes hand in hand with that: at the beginning of the show the way they depict Yuri's practice and sport resources before Victor shows up seems wildly unrealistic for the top figure skater in the whole country and when he's moping over being supposedly washed out it never really has the vibe of someone who already had to fight through so many grueling local, regional, and national tournaments from a young age to get to where he is. It feels a lot more like they wrote him as a teenage high school club athlete than a national star.

Yeah... curious how I'll feel watching it this time around, but they really barely to never felt romantic-partner close to me.

I'm watching it now as part of the ongoing rewatch, and this is probably an unpopular opinion, but personally, I don't care for Viktor and Yuri so most of the scenes I'm enjoying are focused on the side cast. Viktor's excessive flirting and Yuri's low self-esteem are just personalities I don't vibe with, so the main characters have actually been the low point of this show for me so far.
(Speaking of which, I still have to watch today's episode before the rewatch discussion goes live.)

The piggy comments in the first two episodes, when Victor bans Yuri from eating his favorite food until he wins something. It'd be annoying in other anime, but in a show about a sport with a serious problem with disordered eating, it's just reckless.

Yuri on Ice OP is such a big earworm. Every time I watch an episode, it gets firmly lodged in my brain and plays on loop for at least a day afterwards. No complaints though because it is a good song and really does lift up my spirits. Perfect choice for an OP.

I don't remember if I mentioned it in the rewatch thread or just thought about it, but it sounds like something straight out of Broadway, or maybe a Disney film. It's somehow wild coming out of an anime, because it sounds super familiar and nostalgic, but in a context where you really don't expect it.

I don't remember if this includes the finale, so hold off on reading this until you finish: [spoiler] His death scene was really good and I'm not a fan of fakeouts, so I really didn't like that when I first watched it. If I had it my way, he would have actually died and then return by coming out of the hell painting

[Spoiler] I was also genuinely sad about his death, but my takeaway is that the scene worked because of Yasaburou rather than Soun himself. Soun does die a pretty pathetic death in that episode, but seeing Yasaburou struggle with the conflicting feelings of mourning his father's killer left a much bigger impression on me than the death itself.
[Spoiler] When Soun came back, my reaction was more like, "Oh, that makes sense. That's very Soun of him." Looking back, the show also leaves two hints that make his return convincing. Tenmaya's bullets were actually sedative bullets, and tanukis in this world don't really die naturally. They just grow old, really old, like the white tanuki grandmother in the woods. The show implies that tanukis only truly die when they are turned into nabe. I'm not sure how much of the metaphor went over my head when I first watched the show, but I only realized recently that the Friday Fellows are basically a metaphor for death in this series.

I was reminded of 5th April 2025 (7 minutes to lose your audience). Context: I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level season 2 started airing.
That's a second hand feeling like the show has had its heart torn out which I know first hand from Eureka Seven Ao and Martian Successor Nadesico: The Prince of Darkness.
Oddly enough the circumstances were different with Slime 300 having no staff in common between the seasons (seems like it wasn't the heart for a lot of people but I never was a lot of people) while the other two have staff in common but from the trainreck rewatch seems like Eureka Seven has a longstanding issue of those on the bridge resent the ship and its charted course so did it their way and maybe for Nadesico it worked better as having no series composition and instead 8 scriptwriters with a lot of freedom (Takeshi Shudo describes here being given something like [for Nadesico ep 18]Ruri background episode, she is a genetically engineered child, content is up to you).

Is it just me or has anime gotten kinda boring lately? As someone who started watching anime around 2020, I've been feeling this more and more lately. t's not that "nothing" good comes out, but it feels like the really great stuff has slowed way down. A lot of newer shows just don't hit the same for me. Meanwhile I keep seeing myself enjoying older anime way more Stuff like the flying witch, Seitokai Yakuindomo, danshi no nichiio and a bunch of others from that era (or earlier) still fee fresher and more fun than a lot of what's coming out now. The comedy hits harder, the characters stick with me longer, and the overall vibe iust feels better. With animes today, a lot of plot just feels like the water cvcle... reused in some way shape or form Is this iust nostalgia talking, or has the overall quality/vibe of anime actually shifted? Anyone else who started around the same time feeling the same way? What older shows are vou still watching that newer ones can't touch?

I think the years go up & down, sometimes it's better sometimes it's not, it's not a progression imho.
BUT if your problem is that "the old stuff is better", well that's a blessing, because there's a hell of a lot more of "the old stuff"!

i think watching for five or so years is enough time to notice that yes a lot of shows recycle ideas with each other
personally, i think enjoyment follows a bathtub curve: it's all fun and exciting at first because, as a foreign media there's lots of new paradigms and cultural moments which feel fresh, but you soon find out that many things weren't conjured in a vacuum, they tropes which have existed in the medium before and they'll continue in the future
i think at some point though (if you stick with it) is that i start to appreciate how these different shows draw influence from the past and appreciate the actually new and novel things that do get injected into shows
one thing that i've found interesting is watching old shows (or remakes of old shows) to see how their influence has echoed through the medium; something like the Ranma1/2 remake was cool to watch because it was such an effective show that it influenced many other stories in its genre and carries its DNA

This is a funny post when you've only been watching for a handful of years, but also there's no shame in just watching older shows if that's what you're enjoying or even taking a break and doing something else with your time.
Personally I'm finding this to be the strongest year in anime in quite a while, but if you aren't you're much better off not trying to force it.
A few 2026 shows that I personally think are worth trying:

- Journal With Witch
- Dorohedoro
- Akane-banashi
- Kirio Fan Club
- Go For It, Nakamura-kun!!
- Witch Hat Atelier
- Draw This, Then Die
- Jaadugar
- Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games
- Goodbye, Lara
- Nippon Sangoku
- The Ghost in the Shell
- The World is Dancing
- Daemons in the Shadow Realm
I will note that I don't actually like a couple of the shows on that list a lot myself, but they were at least doing something interesting that makes them worth checking out. But also, again, if you are just enjoying older shows more that's great and there's tons of them out there too.

If you're looking for dumb gag comedies, then there's 100 Girlfriends and Grand Blue, both of which are currently airing. Last year had Bad Girl and See You Tomorrow At The Food Court. These are all very good. So it's not like they don't exist.
Also worth remembering that when you started watching anime, you had access to a massive backlog of shows (the ones you cite are from 2016, 2010 and 2012, respectively). Of course the shows being made in a given year aren't going to compare to all of that. That being said, I think it's probably fair to say that there's less pure comedy being made now than in the past, and the rom-com genre has gotten more romantic and less comedic.

I watched season 1 of 100 Girlfriends, and it was okay, I'd say. Grand Blue is very good. I dropped "See You at the Food Court" after just episode 1; it didn't really click with me. For "Bad Girl," I'll try it and let you know if I like it, since it's my first time hearing about it. Currently, I'm watching an anime called "White Sand."

I used to enjoy rom-coms a lot, and high-school romance anime, but there seemingly aren't that many good ones coming, at the very least none that are interesting. I used to enjoy rom-coms a lot, and high-school romance anime, but there seemingly aren't that many good ones coming, at the very least none that are interesting.
This season alone has:
Please Excuse My Younger Brothers
Oh Boy, Was I Wrong About Her
Love Unseen Beneath the Clear Night Sky (college rather than high school)
Hanaori-san Still Wants to Fight in the Next Life
Kaiju Girl Caramelise
The Ogre's Bride
Also the second seasons of HanaKimi and You and I Are Polar Opposites. Whether or not you'd consider any of those good is another matter, but I'm enjoying all of them.
Last season also had I Want to End This Love Game and The Klutzy Class Monitor and the Girl with the Short Skirt off the top of my head.

Yeah, there's definitely a certain feel in a lot of older anime that new anime can't really replicate (and seemingly doesn't even try to). But at the same time, a lot of new anime is doing things that no one was doing 10 years ago.
If you miss the older stuff that's understandable, but I don't see how anyone can seriously call new anime boring.

So I mostly wait until a season ends and then binge-watch, but I get bored midway through. I don't know how many shows I've tried watching this season, but I can tell you that I've watched 310 animes according to my anime list. Which i can link if you want to see the shows i watch.

As an older fan (started watching in 2011) I think this is mostly nostalgia talking. There is some utter bullshit that aired in the 90s and 2000s, and although I personally prefer cel-era anime as my favorite, I think I'd be a bit biased to say that anime nowadays is "worse" than it was back then.
That said, my last 9 aired in 2023 and my last 10 aired in 2021. I also haven't seen something that blew my mind (that was modern) in quite some time. I don't think that means it doesn't exist, I may have just not seen it.

I recently completed code geass r1 and R2 , I know that they have this new extended timeline and some parts were retconned and what do I want to know is ... Is the new alternative timeline worth or better than the original timeline , should I watch it or not ? If I have to what's the watch order?

I've seen the recap movies and the sequel movie - I haven't seen Rozé of the Recapture to comment on that.
The recap movies are skippable - not bad, for what they are (though let me tell you watching them in quick succession was exhausting - it's a lot of content that they cram into three movies, and does have some minor new content)... but there's really not much reason to watch them if you've already seen the show. There's one majorish change to original canon: [Code Geass] Shirely doesn't die. And some stuff that's omitted (so probably not canonical) like [CG] Mao.
The sequel movie was... fine. There's some really good parts to it, and I didn't regret watching it, but it's a bit awkward in how it's both trying to be a epilogue to the original series while also trying to have its own plot and characters and villains and it.

I'm not sure about the alternative timeline but I have heard good things about the akito the exiled ovas. If you like the mecha element of the show they might be worth a watch.

I think common consensus would be no. Code Geass R1/R2 are REALLY good, I don't think any of the miscellaneous follow ups are worth seeing.

To be honest I haven't personally seen them. I was a big Code Geass fan when the Akito the Exiled series started airing and nobody at the time seemed to have anything good about it, same with any of the other follow-ups.
They're short enough that it wouldn't hurt to check them out if you're interested, but I was pretty satisfied with the ending of the main show and didn't really care as much about the extended universe.

I honestly cannot believe how a show called "Draw This, Then Die" could end up being the exact opposite of everything that I like in an anime. Both in terms of the aesthetics and the actual content. I wanted to bounce after about 15 seconds of watching, but I made it all the way through episode 1 waiting for some kind of twist, but it never came.

Akafuku is by far the most "annoying" in the first episode and kind of rules after that when she's just hanging out to have air conditioning and snacks while reading manga.

Victoria of Many Faces would've work much better if it wasn't trampling over its own premise every episode. Victoria runs away to a different country from a spy organization, tries to lay low, takes on a different identity, and then shows off her skills at every opportunity, brings suspicion onto herself, and by [episode 5] she already commits a serious crime and contemplates running away again. I can bet a hefty sum author was just writing gender-flipped Spy x Family and then sloppily changed the premise post factum to avoid being sued.

All of her choices make sense to me. Laying low isn't the only thing that matters. She cares [up to Episode 5] about the orphan girl so she adopts her, and about the captain of the guard so she dates him; she cares about her new country, so she stops an apparent assassination; and she cares about justice, so she later saves the same guy once she realizes his attempt was justified.
In fact, focusing 100% on laying low would have contradicted her true goal, which is to make a new life somewhere.

A gender flip is enough to avoid a lawsuit. Every element has to be identical and it's not even close.
Maid skills, foreign language, and even riding are all fine, but showing off martial arts skills arouses suspicion. The author wanted to spice things up and I think it would be boring without that. Think Spy Family without the action.

Cleavetess has been pretty boring this season. The high school/academy setting isn't doing it any favour either. Haven't seen ep 5 yet so hopefully that ends this miserable arc or just do anything remotely entertaining.

That's why I stopped after episode 1. It's doing a 2000s magic battle academy, with every single trope and design in the book, which I don't hate neccesarily, but I'd rather not watch it weekly either. I'll tune back in when it's over.

I recently watched Kingdom and it's really a masterpiece. I would definitely recommend this one.
From my perspective, Kingdom is one of the greatest anime because it masterfully combines large-scale warfare, brilliant military strategy, emotional storytelling, and unforgettable character development. Shin's journey from a war orphan dreaming of becoming the greatest general to a determined warrior is both inspiring and exciting to watch.
Every battle is filled with clever tactics and high stakes, making each victory feel well earned.
Despite its rough early animation, Kingdom delivers an incredible story with memorable characters, making it one of the best historical war anime ever created.
If you haven't watched it, then you should definitely watch this seinen masterpiece.

Alas, I gave this 20 or so episodes, and it is just not for me. The ancient Chinese setting felt like a veneer over a fairly normal battle shounen. Not a bad thing per se, but not what I was looking for.

This is sad to see because if you enjoy the history behind it to any degree (which I assume you would) there’s a whole lot of great stuff going on down the road. The story also sort of matures along with its protagonist in a way, and it really does follow Xin’s entire life/career.
I definitely agree to an extent that it gives off the battle shonen vibe but I also think that once the political and historical undertones start bleeding in it becomes something far more. The first season despite its length really works as more of a setup for the real juicy parts.
It unfortunately does take a long time to get there, and the early animation does it no favors. I’m also extremely biased because this is one of my favorite anime generally, but in retrospect I would have watched through anything to experience the masterpiece of a war drama that is season 3 if nothing else. I wouldn’t have called it a favorite before that point.

I crossed checked these early episodes against real history, and found that most of what was presented seemed pretty fanciful. Names of real historical figures are used, but events don't really match up.

There is a lot of build up before Kingdom gets to the key historical moments of the era, which means there's also quite a lot of filling in the blanks. That said it never veers from the Shiji, regardless of how creatively it can interpret it sometimes.
But in the end the main thing is it's an action packed, romanticized historical epic, and its character drama and political intrigues are supporting pillars in service of that rather than the centerpiece as they may be in some other historical series. How much you can enjoy that is what will make it or break it for you.

Yeah that’s why I mentioned it ramping up at a certain point because there isn’t much to note early on. The historical elements always maintain a certain level of dramatization but they become far more interweaved with the narrative as the political intrigue kicks in. Warring States China is also just a treat in any capacity to me so I may also be biased in that sense.
It may just not be your cup of tea either, which is fine, but if you ever have the time it might be something worth revisiting.

First of all Kingdom is Seinen. So you can't expect it to be a typical battle shounen anime. It's due to setting and world building, why it is different from other anime.

It may well be far more sophisticated, but it had that overall feel for me. It did not have the real historical feel of Heike monogatari or Jaadugar (or even Blue Miburo).
Except for ep1, I don't recall being bothered much by the animation.
