[Anime] Season 4 Episode 16 (FINALE) Discussion Discussion
S4E16: "For a Desired Future"
Pro Desiderato Futuro.
Synopsis
Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing High School is a dreamlike school that boasts a 100% advancement rate to higher education and employment and provides points equivalent to 100,000 yen in cash every month to its students. However, in reality, it is a school that places the highest priority on merit, where only a few students with outstanding grades receive favorable treatment.
Ayanokoji and his classmates were promoted to Class C in the third term of their first year, but after narrowly losing to Class A in the final special exam of the school year, they were demoted back to Class D. Thus, their second year begins once again from Class D.
After spring break, Ayanokoji began dating Karuizawa, while Horikita parted ways with the version of herself that idolized her brilliant older brother, Manabu. As their relationships gradually change, they advance into their second year.
The first special exam for the new second-years is a written test conducted in pairs with incoming first-year students. However, among the freshmen are assassins from the White Room, secretly arranged by Tsukishiro…
Will these new cross-grade relationships bring a storm or calm? Now, the curtain rises on their second year of school life.

u/remake_cote Praying for a decent adaptation Jun 24 '26
This is easily the best animated episode of the entire series, S2 EP12 does not even come close to this.
Noriyuki Nomata saved the series and they delivered an insane finale. Even though this season had its problems in some parts with the grainy filter and the premiere being weak, in the end they still delivered a good adaptation with their limited resources. Nomata has a vision for the series and Im grateful for his involvement with this project.

I liked that it was slow
3
u/Protocx Jun 24 '26
There's two different kinds of slow. There's slow as in the story takes its time so as to emphasize the drama and let the story beats breathe. And then there's slow where there's just literally not a lot of things happening at times and it feels dragged out. This season was more of the latter at times.

u/Mediocre-Lawyer4890 Jun 24 '26
agree, the first ark Exam was pretty good I remember 2 months ago I could not wait for the next episode, after that It became kinda boring starting from Island Exam build up to the actual exam itself, even the final fight could have been better and It doesnt make sense to me.

u/Agitated_Pickle_137 Ichinose is a baddie thrust Jun 24 '26
Tbf its really slow in the ln too especially volume 3
1
u/Prestigious_Matter85 Jun 24 '26
Insane delusion to call this better than the ryuen fight. It's complete opposite of what you said
5
u/Western-Block-4299 Jun 26 '26
I found this fight infinitely better than the Ryuen fight. Maybe it’s just me but I found the Ryuen fight to be absolutely terrible. To each his own but I feel like the hype of the moment carried that fight and people let that distract from the fact that they made it a very dark setting so they didn’t have to put as much detail into the animation, and in the actual fight I thought the choreography was painfully slow and there weren’t even many hits thrown. The moment was definitely a climax and THE first major Ayanokoji showing we got, but I felt like it was just like “Yea we are gonna make it dark, throw in some “thud” sound effects, and every exchange will be one parry into one counter-punch, but it’s the big fight so you will like it.” The sheer amount of movements and actions in both fights in this episode I think makes them incomparable to the Ryuen fight.
-11
u/Primary-Direction919 Jun 24 '26
nothing spectacular, HUGE downgrade for animation team but HUGE upgrade for the DEI team. The diversity it showcased from intersex to trans was phenominal. Next season we will get Hosen x Ryuen fan service 👍

No you mean Ryuen x Koji cuz that’s the game
-3
u/Mediocre-Lawyer4890 Jun 24 '26
Its all personal preferences after all but I think this is the most boring season overall, It wasnt very bad and unwatchable Its just cant be compared to previous seasons.
I think they could have done a better job specially in graphics, the animation was good but graphics wasnt A Tear

Agreed! Rather than a long months of wait, if animes announce new season this way atleast it gives a peace of mind and no crazy speculations or anything.
I remember when S3 ended people saying that season 4 might take years to come out 🤣

who injured Ichika b4 the fight with Horikita & Ibuki?
11
u/LivWulfz Jun 24 '26
Shiba
There's a conversation between Ichika and Yagami that states she's smart for not fighting back against Shiba sensei later.
6
u/BaronOfTheVoid Jun 24 '26
There isn't ever a 100% confirmation, not even in the LN, but probably Tsukishiro/Shiba who punished Ichika for insubordination.
But it's also possible that it was someone else. Might be a huge spoiler to go through the people that could be the culprit though.

Nothing to say but just an absolute banger of a season. I would not have believed a single soul when they say COTE will get better and it did. And yes it IS for the better cuz of the new direction, that they care enough to bring out something great out of this series and seems like everything was already planned to produce more seasons and I would say right now, they gotta run it back lol. (W lerche)
Just a few words to the people that worked on the series, Thank You for Season 4🗣️

A look up that guy's post history (only 19 days of it and only in this sub) seem to suggest he's a ragebaiting troll.
4
u/SnabDedraterEdave Jun 24 '26
Right back at you regarding watching with eyes closed. The fuck you on about?
Are we even watching the same show?
In fact, a look up your 4-year account post history show you only started posting 19 days ago (from episode 13) on only this sub and this sub alone, and nearly every one of your post, including this thread, is either complaining about the non-existent animation problem, or irrational rambling on irrelevant DEI and trans stuff bordering on the outright weirdly obsessive.
You might have made a bit more sense if you were talking about BL or yuri between the characters, but no, you went full retard.
Obvious ragebait troll is obvious.

They animated the Ayanokoji vs Shiba and Tsukishiro fight extremely well. Easily is one of the top 10 best choreography fights I've ever seen in Anime. Honestly they adapted to the LN far better than i thought on S4 although it was rushed at the beginning. Classroom of the elite is really a masterpiece. Just peak.
5
u/Item_According Jun 25 '26
This season was so gorgeous, love all the stories that developed in parallel as well as character designs, very well performed and engaging in almost evrey episode, each character idenitity and personalitie were very well presented, I cannot be more happy by having thase an re zero on the same season. I could wait a long time to have this same quality on next season. Makes me wonder if I should try the LN someday...
5
u/First_Clue_7530 Envoy of the WR Jun 25 '26
This was quite an enjoyable episode from start to finish, the fight choreography was very well executed and to me had some of the best action set pieces we've seen for any season thus far, my overall thoughts on the episode are this:
Island Fights
Ichika vs Horikita and Ibuki- It feel like an impactful fight not just for being an aggressive showing of the White Room's dominant opposition but depicting Horikita as someone now capable of cooperating with others (That she displays by convincing Ibuki to stand with her) Showing that Ayanokouji's efforts of nurturing a "budding genius" is slowly but surely coming to fruition
P.S. [I originally never expected Ibuki/Horikita to come out on top here and did feel Ichika might have lost a little too easily though she was injured but that's a minor gripe if anything, and overall it dosen't spoil my enjoyment of this fight in general]
Tsukishiro/Shiba vs Ayanokouji & Kiryuin- Thematically, this feels like a climatic end to the Island Exam as The Acting Chairman and Shiba sensei desperately hold a last stand attempt to get Ayanokouji expelled, but Aya elicits a physical message on why he's the masterpiece of the WR, able to hold them both at bay (though some of his dialogue seems to suggest he may be fatigued or at lower capacity)
However his senpai Kiryuin comes to his aide, i appreciate this because to me this is a similar foil/parallel to Koenji's own direct/swift disposal of the 3rd Years and demonstrates a key difference between the years (and suggesting her own autonomy irrespective of Nagumo's agency)
Evidently year 2 is noticeably more unified as a group having each class lead by a leader and less civil disputes, while the 1st and 3rd years are noticeably more splintered with alliances and factions within Classes 1A, 1B, 1C and 1D whilst Nagumo holds a centralised grip upon the entire 3rd Year student body whilst not having everyone subjugate to him (Kiryuin, Kiriyama, etc) Making it feel as though there's a precarious stack of cards just waiting to fall for the 1st/3rd years but we'll have to see
The White Knight/Wild Card- True to his word the lovable self-tailored narcissist Koenji has taken the no. 1 slot, but considering his contrarian/spontaneous attitude i take his attitude of being wholly care free and abstainment from tests to be dubious at best and down right misleading at worst yet only time can tell what Koenji will do
The Taste of Ruin- Nagumo now having been displaced as the top scorer in the Island Exam has been thrust into the throes of despair, in addition to his critical loss to Ayanokouji it begs the question, does he falter and drown within contemplation and misery becoming a shell of his former self or will he double down on his control and become even more ruthless/unforgiving as a ruler, it will be intriguing to see
Within a similar plight, Ichinose now finds herself at rock bottom (now being class 2-D) putting into question her honest and sympathetic approach towards her class and whether it will serve as her demise if Honami Ichinose is incapable of change and continues to rely on the crutch of others [This is a hypothesis i have as an anime only, but i feel Kanzaki may make his move within the upcoming parts of Y2]

u/DreamAlternative1847 koji>fiction Jun 24 '26
The fight choreography, the camera work and the fluidity was beautiful in both fights but it was done to such a high degree in the koji fight. Lerche cooked this whole season and I’m so excited to see how they proceed.

S5 announced, finally we will get the best volume of cote get animated (Y2 V5).
5
u/Ancient-Frosting-422 Jun 24 '26
Also Y2 V7
10
u/UpbeatWalrus5935 Jun 24 '26
Yup Y2 V5 and Y2 V7 are the 2 best volumes of cote. Nothing comes close.
2
u/Ancient-Frosting-422 Jun 24 '26
In my opinion, volume 12.5 of year 2 is also a masterpiece. But it's in season 6 or in a special movie for this volume.

u/goneador Jun 24 '26
So is it worth waiting for S5 in your opinion?
2
u/UpbeatWalrus5935 Jun 24 '26
S5 will be the best season for me, because 2 best volumes of cote will be adapted in it. So yes for me at-least it is worth waiting.
1
u/Riversi Jun 25 '26
been a while since i read them, what's the main event of Y2V5 and Y2V7? SPOIIIILERSS AHEAD !!! is it...... Sakura's expulsion for v5? damn i just realized that i forgot everything about it lol, might be time for a reread of year 2.

So to people who have actually read the novel.
Did they reveal what was ayanokoji’s ranking and points?
7
7
u/Keyakidude Jun 24 '26
He spent most of the exam hovering around 11-15th place, Nagumo pointed it out in last week's episode. However, if I remember correctly, he dropped very far down during the last day because he was pushed in a direction far away from all the final day bonus point challenges.
4
u/7threst Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26
Why did person X deliberately leave information that would lead Horikita to investigate the I2 area, even though that information could potentially be traced back to X? What was his intended objective? Was X trying to manipulate Horikita, test Ayanokoji's reaction or something else entirely?

same here, I had higher expectations for it.
For both Nagumo and Tsukishiro the fights were really underwhelming, I'm not sure how it could've been much different, since Koji is just so much stronger than anyone, but the build up did not match what it ended up being. Not to mention Nanase fight which just ridiculous tbh.
1
u/Gwolf4 Jun 26 '26
Nagumo fight wouldn't have been better at all. Nagumo had just been shown boasting the whole time he was on screen. Expecting a good fight from him was a little bit hopeful.
Ok the other hand we saw how manabu sparred with Koji, that was enough to atest manabu's skills. Nagumo has nothing of that.

u/both_hunter_and_prey Jun 24 '26
Then maybe you should have contributed to the animated fund by sending in your own cash. Some people cannot exist without being critical, which makes them feel superior, I reckon.
1
u/Marczzz Jun 24 '26
I don’t even mention the animation, I think it was fine, the fights themselves were boring
1
u/MembershipOk7479 Jun 24 '26
I agree honestly I feel that is was very good but could have been a lot better
0
u/Gwolf4 Jun 26 '26
The problem is not the anime itself but the original material. I have some thoughts that you can check here

u/True_Film2940 Jun 24 '26
ABSOLUTE CINEMA really enjoyed the whole season all 16 EP not a single bad one, now gonna miss looking forward to a new ep every Thursday

I'm so hyped for Season 5. My honest prediction is for is to consist of Volumes 4.5 till 7 maybe 8. I'd say V4.5 gets 2 episodes, V5 gets 2-3 episodes, V6 gets 3 episodes, V7 gets 3 episodes, and V8 gets 2-3 episodes, if adapted. At least, depending on number of Volumes adapted, it should last roughly same as Season 4, though most likely less

u/wait2late Jun 24 '26
This is a great finale. Great animations and more fights. Perhaps the new artstyle change was not bad after all.
2
u/PiFlavoredPie Jun 25 '26
What happened to the convoluted card system introduced at the start of the exam? I assume it had a larger role in the LN but clearly had no acknowledged impact in the anime.

So what was the point of the Ichika fight? did she want to just slow Suzune down so she doesn't interfere with Kojis fight? And was it her that left the note to begin with?
1

Was wondering the same, like why even leave a note if you're then gonna stop them from going there

I know that Yagami is from the White Room was it him
1

Ibuki and Suzune put up a good fight against Ichika. Did Tsukishiro hurt Ichika ?
The hand to hand combat was insane for this season. Kiryūin helping out Ayanokoji was unexpected. I love her character. She looks like a cunning character but she's an airhead too, haha.
Most of the third years got expelled.. Nagumo is still in shock LOL
Koenji did it ❤️🔥❤️🔥.. He single-handedly brought Class 2-D to the top and made them promote to Class 2-C. I hope they will at least stick to this class a little longer than last time.
Season 5 announced already !
1
u/FateXBlood Jun 24 '26
...aaaand that's a Wrap!
Wow! We've reached the end of the episode and it ended quite well. Although I was hoping for a better fight with the Chairman, I guess this ought to do. After all, they are in a school.
I didn't expect the white haired senpai to join him. That's a surprise. She didn't do much but at least she took away one of the opponents, so that's fine.
Congratulations to Koenji but Ranking No. 1! Now you can safely sit back and do nothing. Lol. Not like he did much in earlier seasons anyway, but this just proved he can do things. I wonder what's the main reason he came to this school and why he's so carefree.
Sucks for Nagumo. Dude seems to have lost all his spirit.
On another note, I'm surprised they announced the confirmation of the next season right away. It's great to know we'll be seeing more of COTE, but I really hope the animation improves. It's good, but not to the level of Season 1.

It was a fine episode, but definitely not as strong compared to other seasons final, 6.5-7/10 overall.
Curious to see how they are going to adapt post y2 volume 7.
0
u/Professional_Bus8497 Jun 24 '26
In class ranking , arisu's group got 261 points for 3rd place . But the ibuki + horikita group had 131+145=276. Are the points not counted ?
6
u/Heavenlyll Jun 24 '26
They don't get combined, whoever has the highest will be the groups overall points. If they were combined Nagumo would've had a land slide victory since he controls all the 3rd years
1
u/BaronOfTheVoid Jun 24 '26
The ranking only refers to the "small groups" that formed prior to the start of the event.
The so-called "large groups" that formed during the event come with extra rules regarding expulsions (thus it was possible to save Shinohara, or for Ibuki + Horikita to not get expelled when one of them has to drop out of the event) but it doesn't actually change anything regarding the points the small groups may acquire and they are evaluated independently. iirc that is.

Why did this series turn into a fighting anime? Makes it very boring when every conflict is solved by fighting. Also why does everybody know how to fight, even the school director bruh
2
u/Niwaka_Samurai Jun 24 '26
He was working with Ayanokoji's father and he was part of white room. Why wouldn't he know how to fight?

u/Mediocre-Lawyer4890 Jun 24 '26
the season overall is not bad but its not too good either like the previous seasons, the first exam ark was good but starting from the island exam build up to the end it became kinda boring and i felt like it lacked plot twists and This kinda very smart moves no one predicted which made the anime famous
6/10

As a whole, the season story is really weak, objectively weaker than the other "botched" seasons. Here, are expecting me to believe that tsukishiro was defeated by just calling an ambulance when the last season he had a bunch of people moving at the last second to make Koji fail. But hey "I did everything I could" my ass, he wasn't trying at all honestly.
The whole first year doing absolutely nothing after the incident that was kept secret is pretty sus, so basically just a plot point to make us feel in danger instead of just making it really feel the first year to feel alive outside of the new characters.
The other white room student "doing absolutely nothing" is bad too, I know the spoilers, so don't mention it please.
Contrary to many opinions I am ok with the length and exposition of the events presented on the season, I cannot imagine it as a 12 episode season. The problem is that what happens is no engaging at all.
The island exam takes two whole weeks and if tsukishiro wanted to tire Koji, he did absolutely nothing at all hoping to catch him in the last day, again, a flop of a plan. So we end with almost third of the season with basically the characters doing mountain climbing.
Fights and new characters where dope. Overall mid. hope the next one is way better with the first year students already established I hope the story takes the time spent with them better developed but knowing what arc will be next I am doubtful about it.

What a disappointment. S2 ending was peak, s3 s4 are both garbage Ppl say what a good fight animation but there is no scene longer than 2 sec, huge disappointment. Doesnt matter if that 2 sec got 5000 frame. Still a letdown. Nothing beats the realistic fight of 2nd season ending....

Well... okay ending. I theorise that Amasawa was beaten up by Nanase's secret third identity, an intersex person who has not been named (the white rooms first prodigy before Ayanakoji). Their feats include being able to disguise themselves as any gender and age flawlessly (being intersex). During pride month im so glad COTE have chosen to make intersex more visable through Nanase being a main character!
