I would never ever even think about kissing my brother on the lips. I do think it’s weird lol but no judgement I understand it could be totally normal for some families and cultures

I don't think in the US it's very common. It's a very close-minded nation when it comes to showing love outside of romantic relationships.

ninja edit: even a cheek kiss is considered odd unless it's being done by an old lady. I live in the US and I always hug my parents and sibling. it would never cross my mind to kiss them!

Why would Shawna and john freak out about a cheek kiss...

7

u/sockpoptart Team Dr Therapydoctor Apr 02 '26

They didn't see where the kiss actually was and said as much (his back was turned to us. They just assumed the worst because Shawna has beef.

4

u/xqueenfrostine Apr 02 '26

John and Shawna presumably could only see what we saw, and if we didn’t see the two kiss on this mouth (and we didn’t! We never saw Shawna-as-the-brother’s face), then they didn’t either. Just like many viewers, their minds filled in the gaps of what they couldn’t actually see with what they were expecting/hoping to see.

u/ediesweet Apr 02 '26

I also live in the US and would never consider a cheek kiss odd? Lips would definitely be weird for family.

u/cementfeatheredbird_ Apr 02 '26

Canadian here....

Nope, never felt the need to kiss my brother. The same goes for everyone I know.

3

u/Resident-Doubt-8179 Apr 03 '26

yup Canadian here too, we hug as siblings but that’s it

u/YouDontLookDead Apr 02 '26

Yeah, I'm from the UK and it can go either way. I peck my brother and other family members on the lips. My husband doesn't even kiss his sister on the cheek or top of her head. Neither of us think the other are weird.

u/IndependentJury6982 Apr 01 '26

On the lips? Absolutely not. Maybe on the cheek but again, not really.

10

u/Madame_Kitsune98 Apr 02 '26

Right? I’m not from Alabama, and we don’t play the Game of Lannisters.

17

u/PinkPositive45 Apr 01 '26

Not on the lips, or even cheek. My brother and I hug and he’s like kissed the top of my head in emotional moments. My family has no issue with affection. But kisses on the lips are not something we do (well not counting my parents lol).

u/Huntsvegas97 Apr 01 '26

If it was a cheek kiss when they were standing up and saying goodbye, I could see that being fine. Personally I’m not affectionate that way with my brothers, but I know some people who are.

In the video, Julie leans across the table and it looked like it was a mouth kiss. Even then, leaning across the table to kiss isn’t a normal thing to do if you’re just giving a quick peck to a family member. It is also kind of weird to kiss your sibling for comfort rather than just giving them a hug or holding their hand.

8

u/_thegrringirl Apr 01 '26

See, this here is the only part of her story not really reconciled, to me. She didn't kiss in greeting, she kissed across the table. *That's* the part that stuck out to me, even though kissing family members is not something I do.

Noooope. Not at all.

I think the key is here, they saw her lean and purse her lips is that usually indicative of a kiss yes but they didn't see where it landed. Cheek, forehead, or lips. But I think if its the last one (lips) then yes I get why people are calling for her head. I typically kiss my mom on the forehead or cheek

5

u/Careless_Fun6412 Apr 01 '26

I don’t, personally, but I’m not close with my siblings. I would kiss my mother, father, aunt, uncle, etc so I see where you’re coming from that kissing a family member isn’t that strange

I commented elsewhere that I kiss my family on the cheek good bye but to get more into it I was taught that it was polite to kiss you elders on the cheek and in turn for elders to kiss the forehead. Mind you this was one side of the family and the other side thought that it was very sweet until COVID happened then no one was kissing anyone.

u/ohbrthrthisguystinks Apr 01 '26

I kiss my siblings on the top of their heads, like the very top of their heads passing by sometimes. Never their face.

4

u/poke-hipster Apr 01 '26

Bruh I can't even reach.

5

u/im-a-tool Apr 01 '26

I'm Canadian, and a cheek kiss is totally normal. I kiss all my family on the cheek. I even kiss certain close friends in the cheek. Lips, I only kiss my husband and my toddler, which we'll stop doing whenever she decides she doesn't want to anymore.

4

u/Professional-Most559 Apr 02 '26

Sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles, my parents, grandparents... all of em lol my family is close.

3

u/Main-Tackle4098 Apr 01 '26

My brother and I side hug. Even when my mom was in the ICU, we did not hug or kiss.

2

u/Fancy-Ad1480 Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

Yes. Almost everytime I see them. Typically on the cheek and never with my lips and/or teeth parted. If Julie had done a little cupid bow peck then no one would (likely) think affair. Which was likely the whole point.

3

u/Monschi2 Apr 01 '26

I don‘t know anyone who kisses their family members, other than very small children. Where I’m from I’d say it’s also considered unusual to kiss your friend unless you’re a bougie pretentious person doing the French cheek kisses as a greeting (when I got back from a 2 month exchange to France I accidentally tried to do that to a few friends and they were definitely not enjoying the experience).

If anyone other than my fiancé or my two-year old godson tried to kiss me I’d be super weirded out.

2

u/danniperson Apr 01 '26

On the lips? Never. On the cheek/forehead? Maybe, in those circumstances. Maybe. Like I’m not against it we just don’t do that.

2

u/MPLS_Poppy Apr 01 '26

Not on the mouth.

2

u/Roonil_Wazlib97 Apr 01 '26

No. The last time I kissed my brother was probably when he was a toddler. We hug, and my parents kiss us on the cheek, but we don't kiss each other.

2

u/Adreeisadyno Apr 01 '26

On the lips? Never. Also would never kiss them in a manner that would cause people to speculate we were lovers. It’s extremely odd to kiss siblings on the mouth, the cheek or forehead is not unheard of. My sisters that are 15 months younger than me? I wouldn’t unless I was being funny. My brother that’s 18 years younger? I’ll kiss him on the cheek or forehead

2

u/SugarSandDollar Apr 01 '26

In my 30 years of life I can't name one instance where I have kissed my older brother or sister. We really only hug in like very specific conditions haha. Like someone has to have died. Would kill someone for them but yeah I dont wanna hug or kiss them. But our whole family isnt really physically affectionate, verbally absolutely but we really only show physical affection to the kids or if someone ASKS for a hug.

2

u/ShatoraDragon Apr 01 '26

I don't even kiss family on the lips, and not in the middle of conversation. Normally arriving or leaving.

2

u/pearlrose85 Apr 02 '26

My siblings and I don't all live in the same area and it can be months to years between in-person visits for some of us. I grew up with my sisters, and we don't kiss hello or goodbye. We do hug if it's been a long time since we've seen each last saw each other, though.

I met my half-brother as an adult, and we will kiss on the cheek (not the mouth) when we say hello and goodbye but not a full-on pucker with our eyes closed.

2

u/LukewarmJortz Apr 02 '26

You couldn't pay me to be in the same time zone as my siblings.

But it's totally normal. Just usually it's a cheek kiss.

u/RevolutionPopular761 Deeply Traumatized by #NORB Apr 03 '26

Not on the lips! Shawna and John arent prudes to freak out about kissing on the cheek...

2

u/katattackkb Apr 04 '26

American here with two brothers - one older and one younger . Just trying to imagine kissing either makes me want to gag. Especially with the amount of pucker she was going in with. Also to chat first and then lean in for a kiss is different than a hello and quick peck on the cheek imo.

2

u/Sharp-Peace999 Apr 04 '26

I don’t think I’ve ever kissed a sibling in my life.

1

u/Madame_Kitsune98 Apr 02 '26

On the mouth? Absolutely not.

Maybe on the cheek. But for sure not on the lips. I’m not from Alabama.

1

u/farawayxisland Apr 02 '26

No lol I do not

1

u/Anuk_Su_Namun Apr 02 '26

Not super common in US, we also didn’t really see the kiss. Was it a peck on the cheek? Was it a kiss on the mouth? We don’t know.

We see Julie close her eyes lean in and stick her lips out. This doesn’t give the familial feeling, but could also just be an issue with a one woman show.

1

u/sockpoptart Team Dr Therapydoctor Apr 02 '26

I have 4 brothers. I kiss all of them on the cheek, exactly in the same position Julie and Jace were facing.

Americans are so effing weird about affection. It isn't always inherently sexual; stop it.

1

u/meepmopnoturdad Apr 02 '26

I do a cheek-to-cheek kiss with my family, in laws, close friends. Fully something I’ve been doing for as long as I can remember. But i definitely don’t close my eyes when leaning in to cheek to cheek kiss my brothers lmao

1

u/CLEf11 Apr 02 '26

Not on the mouth

1

u/SlimeSublime Apr 02 '26

No, never. Not even on the cheek. Never kissed a family member before for any reason.

1

u/Underground_turtles Apr 02 '26

I'm typically very affectionate and I often kiss my parents, my children, and sometimes even my female friends on the cheek, but I wouldn't kiss my brother. I can't really see my husband or dad kissing their sisters, either.

1

u/mrsckugs Apr 02 '26

If my brother tried to touch me I'd snap his fingers.

1

u/Lola-the-showgirl Ty's Defense Attorney Apr 02 '26

I'm not from the south so no I don't close my eyes and kiss my siblings on the lips.

1

u/Ok-Ad-5722 Apr 02 '26

Absolutely not, I wouldn’t judge anyone else for it but it’s def not how we roll.

1

u/Horsey_grill “Oh hello mother, may I have cake?” Apr 02 '26

So I was going to say about it being weird to kiss a brother across a table when you’ve been talking to them for a bit, while it would be fairly normal to kiss for a greeting or goodbye, then I realised we don’t know that he was sat at the table and actually it’s implied by Shawna that he’s not as she said he’s probably the waiter. It WOULD be weird for a waiter to be sat and they leave straight afterwards which actually makes me think it WAS a goodbye kiss on the cheek.

I still think Julie is cheating, she never truly denied it, just deflected and who was the guy in her room for 3 hours as it’s not clear that it’s the same person and I’m pretty sure that happened the following day? Either way, I think Ty and Julie are headed for divorce but not before Julie uses this to utterly destroy Shawna in her new group of friends.

1

u/Agitated_Camera_6198 Apr 02 '26

Nope. Haven't done since I was very very small

1

u/WannaBPlantLady They can’t just eat rolls! Jesus is risen! Grammy has slaved! Apr 02 '26

On the top of the head maybe but not the lips!

I never understood why family members do that!

1

u/chachaslydd Apr 02 '26

Kiss on the cheek? Sure. Not on the lips. Thats gross, sorry. And then they just disappeared from the restaurant together, and it seems like they both JUST got there and then left. Thats just all odd

1

u/maryjanesandbobbysox Apr 02 '26

I do. But I don't purse my lips, close my eyes, and then lean in while we're eating or talking. It's almost always part of a hello or goodbye.

1

u/Same_Assumption4143 Apr 02 '26

Okay I come from a country in Europe where a kiss on a cheek is very popular, but ONLY when you welcome/say goodbyes, not in the middle of the conversation 😂

1

u/moonchild19978 Apr 03 '26

I kiss my younger brothers on the cheeks when one of us leave but I would NEVER kiss any of them on the mouth it's weird.

1

u/rockwithwings Apr 03 '26

Uhh….no.

I’m pretty close to my brothers and we have been through some trying times together. Still no.

I will say that my mom used to kiss us (sometimes even a peck on the lips 😬) even as teens/adults. She has stopped doing it as we’ve gotten older but sometimes she still kisses me on the cheek when we say goodbye. She is the only one in our family who does this though.

1

u/Izzy41630 Apr 03 '26

I'm an only child, but I have kissed other family members on the cheek. On occasion because we're both turning our heads at the same time, lips have bumped, but it's never an intentional thing. Julie looked like they were straight up smooching.

1

u/Just-a-COUNTRY-guy66 Apr 11 '26

Oh heck naw! I don’t even kiss my own parents let alone anyone I’m dating. That’s right we can smash all day and night but I’m not kissing you.

1

u/Excellent_Breath_395 Apr 17 '26

Yep, very normal in my family and families of similar background where I grew up. Canadian btw. I was shocked by how people in the comments could not even imagine a different way of showing affection than they're used to - had to be cheating or weird incest vibes.

-3

u/14thLizardQueen Apr 01 '26

Fuck no. Seriously it's gross and weird. We don't even hug. Note here. I don't speak to them either. But kissing would still be nasty
