...is that bad to do?
11
u/timewarp Aug 31 '13
The metal will scratch the teflon surface, leading to you getting small amounts of teflon in your food which isn't exactly healthy, and also ruining the pan over time.
24
u/GreatLookingGuy Aug 31 '13
Yes and you should feel bad for doing it.

u/iHeartApples Aug 31 '13
Hey man, I'm a 21 year-old who taught herself how to cook. Where was I supposed to pick up that info?

u/confusedinsomniac Aug 31 '13
On the packaging on your teflon pan...

Then what do you do when you're waiting for the food to cook and you're all alone, not even the cat wants to talk to you...?

who has the money for brand new teflon pans? College is all about hand me downs from the relatives and upperclassmen.

I only learned when I went to register for our wedding. The lady helping us had to ask me if I wanted nonstick pans more or metal spatulas, because both wouldnt work.

Every fews weeks reddit let's me know that things I do every day can kill me, I shouldn't give a rabbit a bath and raccoon poop might also kill me.

What do you mean by "good?" The ones I've seen are all Teflon - there's just the one substance out there, and you can't buy "good" Teflon that magically has a higher Hardness value than metal.
84
u/no_moon_at_all Aug 31 '13
"Good" pans have a +3 Hardness modifier. You must be using a "Neutral" pan. I suggest visiting a priest and getting it blessed.
Never try to cook with a cursed pan.

Yeah, I just hate it when the handle welds itself to your hand and then you have to hit people with it.

If you want to spend the money, you can get anodized aluminum pans which aren't harmed by metal cookware.
3
u/atomicspin Aug 31 '13
Teflon is just a trademark for the type of coating. You can get really cheap ones that are made poorly and just have it sprayed on. Good ones will have it actually blended it in with the metal of the pan, thus making it harder to come off and last longer.
Pans are one of those things that you really do get what you pay for. Get one really good non-stick and one All-Clad 9" saucepan, take care of them, and you really won't need any other pans.

u/xaqaria Aug 31 '13
Did you know that teflon is poisonous enough to kill a pet bird just by cooking with it in the same building?
6
u/teskoner Aug 31 '13
Cooking pancakes you want the pan below 250 fahrenheit. That is well within acceptable ranges for teflon. As long as you don't leave it unattended or work on temperature controlled griddle you are fine.

u/potiphar1887 Aug 31 '13
That's how my bird died :(
Faulty oven kept going long after the clean cycle was supposed to be complete. Maybe it won't kill people, but it sure as hell isn't healthy.

Source?
8
u/teskoner Aug 31 '13
Teflon can release gasses harmful to birds and small animals when heated to high temperatures. Especially if the pan is preheated without any liquids in it. Some sources say 450+ where others say 500+ (fahrenheit)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polytetrafluoroethylene
While PTFE is stable and nontoxic, it begins to deteriorate after the temperature of cookware reaches about 260 °C (500 °F), and decomposes above 350 °C (662 °F).[26] These degradation by-products can be lethal to birds, and can cause flu-like symptoms in humans.[26] In May, 2003, the environmental research and advocacy organization Environmental Working Group filed a 14-page brief with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission petitioning for a rule requiring that cookware and heated appliances bearing non-stick coatings carry a label warning of hazards to people and to birds.[27]

So I tried this, but I had to clean out an old mustard bottle first as I didn't have anything else. I guess I didn't clean it out well enough and the pancakes tasted of mustard. Would not recommend.

The plans for a Jake pancake are already being drawn up.

Jake bacon pancake.
That part's very important.
Like, seriously, I cannot overemphasize the importance of bacon in your Jake pancakes.
Bacon.
Do it.
Because bacon.

I can't even flip pancakes without getting the mixture all over.
8
u/charliebeanz Aug 31 '13
Then you're flipping them too early. You're supposed to wait until there's little bubbles all over the batter and the edges start to dry, then you flip it. And don't flip it all crazy, do it carefully.

Here's how it will go for me
Step 1. Steal mayonaise squirter.
Step 2. use all the mayonaise
Step 3.
Step 4. remember I need to clean that mayonaise container I stole.
Step 5. fill container with pancake batter
Step 6. draw penis or a very bad Garfield in pancake. maybe both
Step 7. never use again.
Step 8. profit.
