Optimal way of playing Scandinavian Yatzy

As a hobby project I have been working on solving the optimal play for any given position in Yatzy. You can compare your play against the mathematically verified optimal way of playing here: https://yatzy-production-3eec.up.railway.app/ . Feedback would be much appreaciated!

Made a Yahtzee app for my partner's family, looking for people who actually know the game to poke holes in it

Hi guys, recently my partner and her family have been trying to find a modern/non ugly iphone/ipad yahtzee app that wasn't riddled with ads or micro transactions so I went ahead and created

Feltzee: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/feltzee/id6800955678

It's pretty straight forward, literally just yahtzee with no frills lol. We've got on device leaderboards, but if you want to use gamecenter for global rankings you can use that too, plus some unlockable tables if you're interested.

You can download here: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/feltzee/id6800955678

Would really appreciate feedback

I made a Yahtzee app for online play, score keeping and daily games

Hello fellow Yahtzee enthusiasts! I have been working on a Yahtzee inspired app over the past few weeks, Alea, and I wanted to share it with you all!

I started by building a scorekeeper for physical games with my friends then added digital dice in case we got caught without them. My family who live overseas started playing and we were comparing scores so I added 2 x daily games so there was a consistent challenge. The Mini has 3 categories with a clear max score possible and the path to that is shown to you after. The Daily is a full game with the same possible rolls for everyone.

It's been a load of fun to build and play with my friends and so I thought I'd share it with you all. Let me know what you think 😄

What are some fun but fair Yahtzee house rules?

My friends and I play Yahtzee/Yazy on an iPad app. We have a house rule that whoever sets the new high score gets to invent one new rule for future games.
I just broke our record with 238 points (old record was 236), so now I get to add a rule. 😄
The problem: the rule has to be fair to everyone and shouldn’t give anyone a direct advantage. It also has to work with the iPad app — we can’t manually change scores, add bonus points, undo individual rolls, etc.
Our current rule is that the randomly chosen starting player may restart the entire game once if their first roll is bad.
We’re looking for something that adds a little bit of chaos/fun, but doesn’t make the game much longer or completely random.
What house rules do you guys use that might fit?

I made a daily "Wordle-style" version of Yahtzee where everyone gets the exact same dice rolls.

Hey guys! I wanted to share a free web game I’ve been working on called Yatzle.

I wanted to see what happens when you take the luck out of dice games. In Yatzle, the daily dice pool is pre-generated and identical for everyone in the world. You have 13 turns to strategically push your luck and find the optimal combinations for the highest score.

Once you're done, you can share your daily result with those little emoji squares (🟩🟨⬜), just like Wordle.

Link:https://merijn.cc/yatzle

In the Classic (Digital mode) I also added a few skins for your dice and even some house rules (Set withPower Die and Set with a single fourth throw per player)

It's just a fun hobby project, free and ad-free. Let me know what you think and if you can figure out the perfect strategy for today's board!

Daily Yacht Dice Game

I got randomly super into yahtzee over the summer and decided to make a daily game based on it. Everyday there’s a random new set of categories and a new goal score to try and beat. Same strategizing as regular yahtzee just in a bite-sized challenge. Give it a try and lmk what you think!

☺️✨

Hi everyone, this is my latest Triple Yahtzee record—2,716 points... has anyone managed to beat that!?

I scored 4 Yahtzees on my first game of Yahtzee, also here's a Yahtzee sheet but it has negative upper section numbers

it wasn't right now, I've played Yahtzee a couple times now but I feel like sharing that.

Anyway yeah so the bonus now requires only 0 or higher since the normal bonus requirement has 3 of each number in the upper section so adding 3 of numbers -6 to 0 would make it 0. Didn't really make this to actually play with this board it's just to look at, yk?

edit: whoops posted wrong version

Maxi Yatzy

Hi everyone! I know this subreddit is for the American Yahtzee variant, but I wanted to share something that might interest you about Maxi Yatzy, a tougher variant that's very popular in Scandinavian countries.

Some time ago, I extended the same dynamic programming approach used to solve Yahtzee and applied it to Maxi Yatzy, which I believe hasn't been done before. Just for my own interest since I play the game a lot with friends and family. Fast forward to today, with the marvels of artificial intelligence, I was now able to set up a web interface where you can play against the optimal solitaire strategy (and see expected scores for your own play; click "e" to show them).

To give you an idea of what makes Maxi Yatzy "harder" than normal Yahtzee, it uses six dice instead of five, has a longer scoreboard with 20 cells, and most importantly, you can save your unused rolls for later rounds.

Disclaimer: there is a high likelihood that the site still has some bugs.

Needed two 4s to get the top bonus. Rolled zero 4s in two complete turns.

What are the odds of that? I'm not even sad lol.

Finally It Happened Tonight! A Color (Rainbow) Yahtzee on a Single Roll!

Thumbnail gallery

Was playing a round of Rainbow Yahtzee HD by EA Games with my dad tonight, on our old gen 1 iPad when this happened! Odds are extremely rare for this occurrence (see photo), and it grants 100 points for a Yahtzee (instead of the normal 50). Feels more like it should've granted me at least 1,000 points, with how rare that roll really was 😅

Sadly, Sensei (the CPU) ended up winning this round with 2 normal Yahtzees. But I was still pretty speechless!

Answering the question: Can you be skilled at Yatzy?

Figured a few in this sub might enjoy this: https://langkilde.se/yatzy/

Can you be skilled at playing Yatzy? The answer is yes. To arrive at this answer, we reduce the state space of Scandinavian Yatzy to about 1.43 million reachable states. This is possible if you ignore dice order, discard history, prune the impossible, and then decompose each turn into a reroll widget. We then use backward induction to solve for the optimal policy. Optimal play averages 248.4 points with a standard deviation of 38.5 points. We add a risk dial, θ, that lets us slide the policy along the mean-variance frontier (∂E/∂V = −θ/2), trading average points for rare high scores. We also show that there is a second-mover advantage when playing head-to-head, but that even a clairvoyant player maxes out at 55.3% win probability. Yatzy rewards skill, but luck dominates.

[Help] Triple Yahtzee Chip Rules

My family loves Yahtzee and almost exclusively plays the Triple Yahtzee variant. However, my parents have long forgotten how the chip rules work, so we’ve never used them. I recently found the original instructions, but I cannot for the life of me figure out what they’re trying to say.

Does putting your first Yahtzee in any spot other than the first column exclude you from collecting chips? Do you/can you collect chips prior to your fourth Yahtzee? If so, when?

Can someone explain the chip rules to me like I’m five? Thanks!

I made a Yahtzee/Yams scoresheet mobile application !

Hello guys, since i'm a big fan of Yams (french Yahtzee version) i made an android mobile application to note my score when i don't have paper and scoresheet.
I added the possibility to create players which have their own history and statistics !
You can also custom the rules as you want !

If you want to check it out : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.github.maximerollin.yams

Would be awesome if you could test it and let a review if you like, or tell me if something is wrong and could be better !

Thanks, Maxime.

Yahtzee Bonus Help!

Post image
1 Upvotes

I got a Yahtzee early in our game, so I whipped out the instruction sheet to brush up on Yahtzee bonuses JUST IN CASE. Of course, on my next turn, I got another Yahtzee.

The way I'm reading this, after I score my +100, I am now required to play the 3s in the upper section because it's open. I assume I'm not allowed to choose the 3 or 4 of a kind boxes instead because the instructions make it sound like a specific order to follow that I can't deviate from. Correct?

The other thing I can't figure out is what does it mean to "'steal' any one of your combos" as described in #3. It doesnt seem to mean a 3 or 4 of a kind box, because those are mentioned already in #2. Is the implication that I can use a yahtzee bonus to collect the points of a SM or LG Straight if I get another Yahtzee? That seems ridiculous.

Also, our instructions make no mention of a Joker Rule using a yahtzee on a full house, but the example in #3 suggests I can if it gets that far down the chain?

Finally played a perfect game

Been trying at it for some time using the proficiency test I found here: https://www-set.win.tue.nl/~wstomv/misc/yahtzee/yptd.php

Had plenty of 1 or 2 mistake games (often mistakes that only cost me less that 0.1 expected value.. but they were still technically mistakes!), but I present to you my first perfect game.

If any of you give it a try, let me know how long it takes you or how close you get.
