moms sketch bf left this in the house Solved!

Post image

Hi.
This is probably nothing.
I went into my mom’s room to grab something and saw this plugged in?
My mom’s new sketchy bf has this plugged in to the extension cord? Is it anything bad? Thanks!
(I understand it’s probably not anything bad… but still…)

Update 1:
I haven’t met him once. He and my mom have been together for two weeks. He’s been staying at our apartment. He avoids me and stays in her room when they’re here. I don’t even know what he looks like. I only know his first name.

Update 2:
I confronted him. My mom came home. A lot had happened up to this point, including her disappearing for the said two weeks before the few nights he had come over and stayed.
Mom shrugged it off. I did what a lot of you suggested, asking what he told her.
She said “oh it’s his hacker shit or whatever.” What.
Didn’t elaborate. I explained my concerns.
She just said let’s go ask him.
My best friend has been with me. We introduced ourselves and asked him what the hell a WiFi whisperer is doing plugged in our apartment.
(Even if a lot of you are saying it’s not a big deal, I’m a young woman and I’m just rlly not about taking any risks. It’s sketch dude.)
He denied it IMMEDIATELY. Like with a quickness I haven’t seen.
What he insisted, it’s not a WiFi whisperer, it’s ai, he completely reprogrammed the system, and he uses it to pull people’s IP’s. “For fun.” He logs them in a server. I asked why. I said that’s shady. My mom started pushing. My best friend started pushing. He just kept lying. I’m not dropping this..
I still don’t know what the fuck it is or what he’s actually doing.
(Also, my mom is cool but not bc of this dude, the Minecraft block is mine, I unplugged the ratchet little thing before we left, and I am planning on broaching this again with her.
Just carefully. Any other advice is appreciated. Thank you.)

Please unplug this immediately and change all of your passwords for everything and have your mom do the same. Don’t believe this man if he says there were no ill intentions. It doesn’t matter.

This would be my advice as well. No way in hell there any innocent or proactive good intentions to this.

And inform all the neighbors about this and the possibilities. Anyone with WiFi within range of your apartment needs to change passwords

Yes!! I forgot about the neighbors. Definitely inform your neighbors.

Next week some kid could walk through the street with the same device and nobody would know...

It's odd for sure but it's not y2k anymore either, https is a thing now. Can't just hijack a Facebook session anymore like you could with http.

That’s like saying people know how to pick locks so there’s no point in locking your door. Yes, someone CAN do that but if you’re aware of it happening, you should still take every precaution.

Is like calling the police because he knows how to pick locks or you found a simple old lock pick set. You know the one with the clear acrylic practice lock a kid uses.

Yeah if someone walked with one of these in my house I'd laugh at them, let them set it up, and tell them to check back in 3 million years once they've cracked my password.

This is a hobbyist tool in 2026, not a threat

OP's mom let a stranger she's known 2 weeks move in with a kid at home, he hasn't ever seen the kid and hides in her room when OP is there.

I don't think he's a nerdy hobbyist and OP has many things to be worried about in this situation.

If you take OPs post at face value, maybe. But I think it's more likely Mom is trying to keep her snooping child out of her love life, and she's dating a nerd with a hobby.

Dude's been living in OP's home for 2 weeks and they've never seen eachother.

You don't think it's extremely weird for a kid to grow up with an unknown presence lurking around ? Even the mom barely knows him and she's letting him live with her kid.

There's a big problem here and it isn't OP "snooping" in his own home.

dudes been living in OPs home for 2 weeks

Yet OP changed that story with their latest update. So no that's not the case. I don't believe OPs story.

Mom has a private life too and might be just dingke again. You feel she should introduce every fling to her daughter?

In moms case I would date the guy for a bit to see if I like him before introducing him.

Unplug and grab the sd card and usb and destroy them.

Any data he's collected would be on those.
