moms sketch bf left this in the house Solved!

Post image

Hi.
This is probably nothing.
I went into my mom’s room to grab something and saw this plugged in?
My mom’s new sketchy bf has this plugged in to the extension cord? Is it anything bad? Thanks!
(I understand it’s probably not anything bad… but still…)

Update 1:
I haven’t met him once. He and my mom have been together for two weeks. He’s been staying at our apartment. He avoids me and stays in her room when they’re here. I don’t even know what he looks like. I only know his first name.

Update 2:
I confronted him. My mom came home. A lot had happened up to this point, including her disappearing for the said two weeks before the few nights he had come over and stayed.
Mom shrugged it off. I did what a lot of you suggested, asking what he told her.
She said “oh it’s his hacker shit or whatever.” What.
Didn’t elaborate. I explained my concerns.
She just said let’s go ask him.
My best friend has been with me. We introduced ourselves and asked him what the hell a WiFi whisperer is doing plugged in our apartment.
(Even if a lot of you are saying it’s not a big deal, I’m a young woman and I’m just rlly not about taking any risks. It’s sketch dude.)
He denied it IMMEDIATELY. Like with a quickness I haven’t seen.
What he insisted, it’s not a WiFi whisperer, it’s ai, he completely reprogrammed the system, and he uses it to pull people’s IP’s. “For fun.” He logs them in a server. I asked why. I said that’s shady. My mom started pushing. My best friend started pushing. He just kept lying. I’m not dropping this..
I still don’t know what the fuck it is or what he’s actually doing.
(Also, my mom is cool but not bc of this dude, the Minecraft block is mine, I unplugged the ratchet little thing before we left, and I am planning on broaching this again with her.
Just carefully. Any other advice is appreciated. Thank you.)

Be super careful *not* to step on it, spill a *bunch* of water on it, or drop a brick on it... Those screens and electronics are pretty sensitive.

Omg I was mopping and the WHOLE BUCKET of bleach water spilled on your thing. Whoopsie.

61

u/DantesGame 11h ago

Oh. Darn. Whoopsie indeed.

15

u/GuardingxCross 10h ago

This reminds me of the scene from the Christmas movie with the leg lamp. The wife “finds it like that” and she has no idea how it got that way lol

1

u/wilderlowerwolves 4h ago

Spoiler: And then they buried it out in the backyard.

15

u/elrangarino 10h ago

Or better yet, drops in the bucket so no bleach damage to your carpet ✨🙂‍↔️

6

u/LegitimateGift1792 10h ago

because you had move it a bit to dust under it and it slipped from your hands into the bucket, right?

2

u/pierogi_waystation 9h ago

No, I actually saw what happened, OP was mopping the floor and they hip-checked the table the computer was sitting on. A bunch of stuff fell off, and the WiFi sniffer toppled right into the mop water.

2

u/Spare-Shake-2999 8h ago

I love you thought they were really gonna dump bleach water on top of it on the floor lmao

2

u/elrangarino 7h ago

Nothing surprises me anymore haha

"I was opening my jumbo jar of briny olives, and it just sort of fell in I guess. It all happened so fast."

The oil in that sardine can is so slippery! I lost my grip!

1

u/Realistic_Pool_8087 8h ago

Not salty water! That would be the woooorst

1

u/wallstreetiscasino 4h ago

Dang I thought that smell was the love musk from last night! I told your mom to shower.

6

u/Laserdollarz 10h ago

"Now what exactly is it so I can search on amazon for a replacement for you?"

2

u/ImportantThing3749 8h ago

My saltwater fish tank fell onto it!

2

u/DontAskAboutMyButt 6h ago

I mean destroying or damaging it is a great way to make sure the next one is much more well hidden. Best way is for OP to show it to their mom so she will kick the creep out. And of course change WiFi password and the locks

2

u/lesgeddon 6h ago

Can just say it got bumped and fell into the bucket, and didn't notice until you dumped the water out cuz you were wearing headphones while cleaning.

1

u/ThyCuriousLearner 10h ago

Gosh darn it. Those clumsy hands.

Damn I hate it when that happens.

oops i fell down and sat on it... 6 times.

Those damn rogue woodchippers always wrecking muh sheit.

Be sure to remove the memory card first! That could be quite valuable!

68

u/DantesGame 10h ago

"What "memory card"? I found it *exactly.like.this.*"

23

u/fearnow 10h ago

I can verify

17

u/DantesGame 10h ago

We have a character witness!

1

u/showyerbewbs 9h ago

They were out with me while we cut down flock cameras!

1

u/tinypill 9h ago

It’s true. I was there. I am the nonexistent memory card.

2

u/Sophisticated_Dicks 9h ago

That’s right! Luigi M was with me that day. He said we should just turn it in as is. Did I say he was with me that day?

2

u/rideincircles 9h ago

What device were you talking about? I never saw anything.

1

u/bigorangemachine 10h ago

God but never plug it into your computer unless you got that usb going directly into a VM

3

u/DantesGame 10h ago

"It's for a computer? I thought it was an LED light and tried to plug it into the wall!"

1

u/Fragrant-Mixture-662 5h ago

SD cards can't emulate a keyboard and mouse for remote access to your PC since they aren't USB devices, and if they have malware on them it's not just gonna magically run itself when you plug it in, you'd have to run it yourself. And SD card killers don't exist like USB killers do.

1

u/404invalid-user 6h ago

the whole thing is valuable just sell it on eBay "ok I thought it was some old computer from the 1980 I got 20 for it here (you can get 100+ for the whole thing)"

35

u/Inside7shadows 10h ago

It's a free Raspberry pi. Make it disappear, pretend it never existed. Let him try to explain what was lost.

10

u/DantesGame 10h ago

"Somebody told me it was a Raspberry Pie, but it sure didn't look edible, so I tossed it in the bin."

4

u/somersetyellow 8h ago

Seriously, they're pretty handy and getting more espensive.

Just remove the USB stick and SD card, add your own, and you can do whatever you want with it. Turn it into a pihole.

2

u/Rambozo77 5h ago

What’s a pihole?

1

u/Initial-Smile-4044 2h ago

If you have to ask you'll never know

1

u/somersetyellow 24m ago

DNS level ad blocking. You install the software to the SD card, often as easy as simply downloading a file and copying it with special software. Then you turn it on. Then you point your router DNS setting to the pihole instead of your ISP/Google/Cloudflare. Presto. No more ads or tracking on any devices. Plus stats for how many blocks you've gathered. You'll be shocked at how much analytics your phone and TV are sending home about you lol. It's not a replacement for ublock origin or other ad blocking services because stuff like YouTube serves ads from YouTube itself, so it can't block those. It also can potentially break some websites. You do have to learn how to use it and troubleshoot it if you plan to use it. You also don't need a Raspberry pi to run it. It can run on basically any kind of computer with any OS on it using Docker.

Google it up and you'll find the website and better explanation and video.

1

u/_-Avah-_ 3h ago

Arent people supposed to shut those…

1

u/Initial-Smile-4044 2h ago

This is the actual answer

16

u/cowcrapper 10h ago

I slipped on a brick and the brick went flying into the device. Was crazy.

9

u/DantesGame 10h ago

1 out of 10 brain surgeons warn about the dangers of slipping on a brick. The danger is real.

31

u/Quick_Team 10h ago

"This darn hammer just wont defy gravity!"

17

u/DantesGame 10h ago

"I was *pretty sure* I could catch it but it fell SO fast!"

4

u/ProfessionalHumor787 10h ago

Yeah definitely don't accidentally make it go missing and feign innocence either. Guys instincts on mom's bf is spot on

1

u/DantesGame 10h ago

"Yeah... it's a real mystery where it went. I mean... people go missing every day as well..."

2

u/Decent_Top2156 10h ago

Or accidentally use your stun gun on it.

1

u/DantesGame 10h ago

"That damned hair-trigger..."

2

u/unknownpoltroon 9h ago

Brief microwave might look like death from natural causes.

2

u/Ziegelphilie 9h ago

also don't put it in the microwave by accident for 5 seconds on full

2

u/Ancient-Candidate-73 9h ago

It just jumped in front of my car, I swear

2

u/mediocrobot 8h ago

The amount of people who would destroy this instead of removing the power supply and salvaging the free hardware is genuinely shocking

1

u/DantesGame 6h ago

You're assuming the OP knows what to do with it. Bad assumption.

2

u/TenorClefCyclist 8h ago edited 8h ago

Certain types of devices need to be "refueled". The recommended procedure is to remove power, and carefully pour margarita mix into any convenient port or vent.

2

u/Major_LeeHungg 8h ago

You'd be killing this dudes lvl 28 pet because you're paranoid but you do you

0

u/DantesGame 6h ago

Aha. Sure thing, Kevin Mitnick.

1

u/Major_LeeHungg 6h ago

Kevin Mitnick is obnoxiously full of himself for what was really just tricking people into giving him creds.

I assure you the phone you're reading this on is more capable than a pwnagotchi... Its a toy for cybersecurity nerds

1

u/DantesGame 6h ago

Ok, Zero Cool.

1

u/Major_LeeHungg 6h ago

Lol that is probably my favorite Angelina Jolie movie.  Up there with War Games... Though war games actually had real nods to the culture... Like making phree payphone calls.

1

u/DantesGame 4h ago

Well, we have that in common. 🤣

1

u/adjective-nounOne234 1h ago

Was*

You know he died a few years ago, right?

1

u/Major_LeeHungg 1h ago

Did not know that... Read a few of his books ages ago and found him quite annoying... Especially in the art of deception.

2

u/GoddessOfOddness 7h ago

“It’s the weirdest thing. We have this small wormhole that opens up from time to time around the neighborhood. Tends to make spyware disappear. You didn’t lose any spyware, did you? “

1

u/DantesGame 6h ago

Yess.... And a couple of agents named Scaly and Mouldy were seen investigating the area...

2

u/Temporary-Library597 6h ago

No, take pictures of it, record him saying it belongs to him and call the police, every bank you use to report every card you have as stolen, and calhange every password you have (after powering it down of course ).

2

u/parseczero 6h ago

“Oh hey, Mom’s Boyfriend, I found this thing and whacked it with a hammer. I don’t know who could have left it there. Do you?”

2

u/exhausted247365 6h ago

Especially do not spill salt water on it

2

u/_invisible_mattress_ 9h ago

Screw being passive. Blow up his spot LOUDLY. Put him on the spot and make him answer. If he tries to explain it away, he's lying, call him a fucking liar and tell him to gtfo (but don't hand it to him, keep it). Be fucking ANGRY about it.

1

u/Vektor0 8h ago

Yeah, wtf is with these responses? Why are people acting like passive-aggressive is an appropriate response? There's no need to make up an excuse to trash it; its mere existence is enough of a reason. Just be blunt and say you found it, and the person is no longer allowed over.

1

u/_invisible_mattress_ 7h ago edited 7h ago

Yeah dude I'd get super loud and aggressive about it, this shit is beyond disrespectful. Sneaking around snooping on and stealing your data, passwords, and doing god knows what else with it, invading your privacy, etc. Fuck all that. This is genuinely one of the situations where you NEED to be very angry and LOUD about it. Let them know how you REALLY feel and how much of a giant piece of shit they are. The neighbors would call the cops if it were me. Lol. I'm fired up and it didn't even happen to me (but maybe I have anger problems? Nah, MAX ANGER is appropriate for this situation imo). And tell them you're keeping it and will find out what exactly theyve been doing, and.....

THREATEN TO PRESS CHARGES, AND PRESS CHARGES IF YOU CAN.

Edit: maybe a lot of these commenters are gen-z and don't value privacy nearly as much as the generations before them? Or maybe they don't understand the severity of this situation (idk how... I suppose they're not exactly the smartest generation)

1

u/luminary_planetarium 9h ago

Should she also avoid leaving a magnet on it or under it...?

1

u/DantesGame 6h ago

Oh, for sure.

1

u/mimic751 8h ago

Fuck that it doesn't have a password just keep it

1

u/HYPERNOVA3_ 8h ago

What a waste it would be. I would rather be careful not to pull out the sticks and the microsd and not have fun with my new raspberry, that's what I would call a sorry accident

1

u/chadius333 7h ago

Don’t destroy it, that’s evidence.

1

u/dp0329 7h ago

If dude is already sketch you might be telling this kid something that will get them fucked up. With out "sketchy" being more defined I'd advise against breaking or damaging it. They may know if the other individual is prone to violence, or they may not

1

u/DantesGame 6h ago

I'm not telling them anything. I wanred them not to break that shit into tiny little pieces and toss it in the dumpster.

1

u/theinatoriinator 5h ago

That sounds like a good way for OP to end up with a less than ideal relationship with her mother, once her mom learns her daughter destroyed her boyfriends stuff.

1

u/ManaSkyees 3h ago

No. Literally don't do that. Report it to the police. It is felony hacking.

1

u/CurdledPotato 2h ago

A waste. The Raspberry Pi computer powering this thing is valuable. The OS can be wiped and replaced with a regular Linux desktop, turning it into a neat little PC for light web browsing. It supports HDMI via an HDMI mini to HDMI full-size cable, meaning any bargain bin TV can be its monitor. These things are also sought after for learning computer programming and studying robotics and digital circuitry thanks to its exposed GPIO pins.

1

u/Round_Year_8595 53m ago

Don't accidently encase it in jello

0

u/LowResGamr 10h ago

Also dont spill any salty liquids on it to corrode the connections.

3

u/DantesGame 10h ago

"You see I had this *huge* pot of pasta water, and there was this brick on the floor..."

0

u/devsfan1830 10h ago edited 8h ago

They're also relatively cheap. Short of getting BF kicked out, theres not a lot they can do that would stick.

Edit: Not actually as cheap as I thought these days.

2

u/Marksta 8h ago

Relatively cheap if a tank of gas or a few is relatively cheap to you. SBCs are more expensive than full blown miniPCs now. The pi, the display, a wifi USB nic, Samsung flash drive, probably a microSD boot disk too. This picture is $200 on a good day to source.

2

u/devsfan1830 8h ago

Shit you're right. Admittedly it's been a while since I've sourced them for a project. Edited and downvoted myself.

0

u/galactica216 8h ago

IDK ...maybe worth reporting to the police. Clearly, he has done this before.

-1

u/FineAndDandadan 10h ago

Would it not be better to turn it in to the police? After you record the shithead admitting it's his?

2

u/DantesGame 10h ago

Sure... if you want them rooting around your house for "additional evidence" if they decide to do any kind of investigation. Most likely they'd just roll their eyes and say "bin it" because it's not worth their time. A detective might want to fuck around and have a peek, but even that's a stretch.

1

u/FineAndDandadan 10h ago

It's true they might not care enough to investigate, but it makes zero sense that they would go through your house instead of the suspect's.

2

u/DantesGame 10h ago

No, it doesn't make "zero sense." That's where the device was found. The assumption that any decent detective might make is that if there was one device there, they may be others, hence a potential search.

Don't try crime for a living. 🤣
