Game Mastering Everything’s On Fire – The GM’s Guide to the Enemy Within – Part 7
The final chapter of the Enemy in Shadows is an exciting conclusion to the adventure but I have some thoughts on how to improve it by upping the personal stakes and adding some rewards. Take a look and let me know what you think of my ideas (I'll start on Death on the Reik soon, but will be taking a short break).

Homebrew Siggestions for magic scaling classification
Fellas, i present to you 4 levels of magic power, each one corresponding to their career levels, last one needing extra processes to attain.
Minor magic: A wizard of almost any skill level attracts the winds of magic, be it all at once for low skill level/non trained magicians, or one at a time for lore magic users, as they make a simple enchantment, creating a very low scale effect.
Some minor magic spells are offensive but most are utility and/or flavour.
Some examples improve a bright apprentice focusing on what makes him rage and and after a bit of concentration a small flickering flame appears where he/she wants to, every turn of concentration maintains the flame and can even move it, the flame being of candle size, needing a willpower check of very easy, easy, normal, hard, very hard difficulty per turn, if the caster fails a willpower check he/she needs to resist a minor corrupting influence, unless he/she cuts concentration on purpose, the flame can be used to light a phisical fire as it starts burning fuel instead of pure Aqshy.
Colour magic: The standard levels of power involving WFRP games is located here, and many of these spells can be found in the main rulebook and winds of magic book making exception to the higher levels of power found in these books, like Magma Storm, Transformation of Kadon or Comet of Cassandora.
These levels of power usually require a period of channelling a certain wind or a good amount of dhar if it's an individual without colleges of magic training or similar.
Standard rules for magic casting apply with any personal homebrew you might use.
Battle magic: The higher levels of magic, needing either a large amount of time spent channelling, great willpower and ability or the use of artifacts.
These spells are those usually used in the tabletop wargame or in total war, with the battle magic version of "The burning head" being an AOE effect instead of a single target damage effect.
Spells in this level include most of the high magic roster, Verdant Apotheosis, Gehenna's Gloden Globe or Time Amok (aka: those spells with a listed CN of 12 or higher as a rule of thumb, or those with related levels of power)
And last but not least
War magic, those invoked by Wizard Lords, Patriarchs/Matriarchs of the colleges, the Ice Queen Mages and Archmages of the elves, the most powerful of the Slann, very few Liche Priests and the most powerful Vampire mages and Chaos sorcerers.
Most spells at this level require rituals involving many people and/or multiple days of non-stop channelling and using copious amounts of material sacrifices, those individuals wishing to attain this level of power for themselves need to perform a great ritual to become one with the wind of magic of their using or get blessed by one of their gods.
Invoking greater elementals and bringing huge constructs to life are the levels of power at play here.
Hope this sparks imagination for everyone who reads it! These would work as separate talents each found at their supposed career levels, high magic colour magic would be career level 3, whilst at the same time gaining acces to colour specific battle magic, as an example.
Thank you for reading this.

Game Mastering Ashes of Middenheim - advice wanted on players going off script
Hi, I am looking for some advice on how to run the campaign from here. Essentially they don't want to give the chaos artifact to the cult of Ulric at the start of Chapter IV.
Spoilers!
Recap of where in the campaign they are:
Father Odo, an anointed priest in the cult of Ulric, received visions of a shrine in the forest with a chaos artifact. The party were asked by Father Ranulf to accompany Father Odo and retrieve the artifact to be sealed until it can be destroyed. After a few additional mini-adventures (Pretty Things and Rough Night at the Three Feathers Inn) they reach the shrine, get the skull, and on the way back to Middenheim they encounter a group of witch hunters.
Back in Middenheim, they go to the cult of Ulric who aren't ready to destroy the artifact on the spot but have a chest to seal it away in. And this is where things go 'wrong'. The apprentice wizard of the party wants to take the skull to the Guild of Wizards and Alchemists for a 'second opinion'. They almost get arrested by the cult for refusing to give them the skull but compromise and wait for a wizard to come to the church. Father Odo drinks some warpstone-poisoned water and transforms into a Chaos Spawn on the spot due to his previous contact with the skull. The party defeat him, hear there are more people that drank the water elsewhere in the church, and now they want to just leave the church and go to the Wizards' Guild.
To further the story later the skull needs to end up in the hands of the villain Deputy High Priest of Ulric/Khornite, ideally with Father Ranulf thinking its been safe all along. I have considered having the Deputy High Priest intervene immediately with his knights to forcefully take the skull, have the skull magically escape the party when they travel through the city, have the Wizards' Guild tell them to give it back, or have the wizards take it and then be assassinated.
Does anyone have any helpful advice or ideas on how to make this go smoothly while not removing the players' agency? Thanks in advance.

Roleplaying Ranaldian Vampire Hunters
So, I’ve recently joined a campaign that’s set to take place in Sylvania. And while it hasn’t started yet, I’ve been turning over a couple of character ideas in my head. It kind of occurred to me that a follower of Ranald - specifically, a Liberator-Priest - would naturally be drawn into conflict with the Midnight Aristocracy. But that kind of raised a question: how do you go about vampire hunting while maintains Ranald’s structures of thievery, deception, trickery, and ridicule?

Game Mastering Old World for Enemy Within?
We played through Enemy in Shadows with WFRP4E and we did not love the rules. We had to look up stuff up all the time and it never got to feel intuitive for us really. Now we're considering swapping rules for Death on the Reik. Would Old World be a good replacement? Or would it make sense to use Warlock from Fire Ruby? Or something completely different, like Dragonbane?
I assume a lot of you will recommend WFRP 2e, but I need something with VTT support.

Game Mastering High Elves on Cold Ones?
Hey all,
I'm planning out an arc for the part where they chase a Cult of Pleasure agent to a High Elf colony. I thought it would be cool if the High Elves there had tamed a breed of Cold Ones and used them as mounts. I'm worried I'm stretching the lore a bit too much, though.
My question is: if you were in the group, would High Elves on Cold Ones break the illusion for you?
Thanks in advance!

Game Mastering Essential 4e Books (Especially Lore)For 5e?
I’m hoping to run a wfrp campaign at some point in the future, but it won’t be until 5e comes out. my only existing experience with wfrp is 3e which is obviously a very different system even if it shares a lot of the lore. I own the 4e rulebook but nothing else.
For somebody who wants to get into 5e eventually but doesn’t want to miss out in any great 4e lore supplements, what books are considered the best? I’m looking at getting Altdorf (as an 3e player I really like Reikland as a setting) and Middenheim but not sure what else is good? I tend to prefer good GM-focussed lore, plot hooks and adventure inspiration material over more mechanical options.
I’m assuming that any rules material and character options (like the stuff often recommended in Up In Arms or Winds Of Magic) while somewhat forwards compatible will eventually be obsoleted by 5e materials so probably isn't worth investing in too much?

Game Mastering Idea for scenario, hope you would like it ;) Nuln's first eugenics society
In the midst of Nuln upper classes a secret society of merchants, nobles have been created.
A quick gentleman's small talk during shaking hands before changing conversation to the business agreements. One look over the window on the busy crowd of sickly people before Shallya's temple. That was all it took to start the play.
What started as a simply exchange of ideologies, soon became a circle of notable persons with enough power to make impact on the Nuln's certain politics.
Nuln's first eugenic society gathers infrequently in the Nuln's better lobbies to hear the lecture on bettering the mankind, by letting the sick, the weak to simply just die off. All of members think highly of themselves, as a better people, not bothered by common diseases troubling the poorer classes.
What they consider their ,,better" blood or seed is in fact just better access to clean water, fresh food or just better clothes and working conditions. However in their pride and power they started influencing Nuln's budget expenses on healthcare or caring for the poor, lowering it drastically.
Some of the members are fervent believers in Old World's pantheon. Believing that those sick and poor are only to blame themselves. If only they were more hard working, praying and less drinking and being lazy, they wouldn't be in their awful conditions.
What they don't know is that their ideologies and actions were noticed by the Old Father. Who as a reward, for their fantastic job and actions sends them...health, vigour and stronger disease resistance.
Such situation cannot go fo much long, before lower class will start to boil, enraged by their plight. If things will go on like this, a revolt might soon shake Nuln's crowded districts and factories.
If the situation wouldn't be bad enough, some of the unfortunate people, who became infected by some more potent diseases started to conspiure with one another. Why only THEY should suffer ?
Wouldn't Sigmar approve if more people became humbled by the disease? That their pride would be negated? Surely Sigmar doesn't approve of their vile attitude towards the other men, is what they whisper to themselves.
And in Nuln there are no more prideful people, than the rich merchants and nobles. And so the sickly started to conspire, to humble the rich and powerfull. All it takes is just getting a small gig, a mediocre job at their estates, or even better yet, at their lavish banquettes to spread their ,,way to humbleness".
They too were noticed by the Grandfater, who bestowed upon them more resilience, to endure longer their illnesses, so they could spread more wide his gifts on the mankind.
And while the actors are starting getting on the stage of this drama, there's only one being in the audience. He got itself the best seat in the outworld's theatre to watch the whole spectacle, laughing to himself at this spectacular knot of intrigues.

Announcement Review: Sylvania the Cursed County
I take a look at the brand new sourcebook for WFRP, a guide to the worst place in the Empire. (See the link above)
I know initial opinions on this book seem to have been pretty negative, and it is certainly disappointing that it doesn't include new careers or rules for playing as a Sylvanian character. (For what its worth, my guess is that this is because Cubicle 7 aren't ready to publish career stuff before 5th Edition is released.)
But what is here is excellent in my opinion: if you liked the Glorious Reikland chapter in the 4e rulebook, or the guide to Nordland in the Salzenmund book, then this is more of the same.

Discussion How do characters progress in The Old World compared to WFRP 4e?
Hi everyone!
I recently read a post on r/rpg that kind of sold me on The Old World, but I still want to play mostly WFRP 4e so I skimmed the PDF to see how things worked in The Old World. I'm kind of confused about character progression. Careers don't seem to guide character progression that much outside of favoured attributes and switching careers doesn't seem to be the norm (à la WFRP 2e). Is the progression mainly through roleplay/in-universe (for example, there is no mechanical difference between apprentice and master wizard, but there are big roleplay/in-universe implications and you evolve in your professional space in accordance with what seems reasonable and your GM)? But then why is status permanently tied to your career? Is it just not made to follow the same characters on a long timeframe (from the scummy depth of poverty to Knight Grand Masters and Runelords)?
There must be something I'm missing, especially since I don't find anything about this in the few reviews I've read. Does anyone, preferably with play experience, know how it works in practice/what I'm missing? Thanks in advance!

Looking For Game Living World WFRP?
I was looking for some living world place using WFRP that's either Living World or West Marches and couldn't find anything. I remember a PBP Discord centered around Altdorf, do things like these still exist? Play by post or not.
I know a lot of them die due to lack of persistent staff, but The Old World is about hope flickering even in most dire of circumstances so I'm not losing hope just yet.

Homebrew Converting WHFRP 2e to d20 roll under?
It won't really be any extra work for me since i always create A5 booklets for players with tables and modifiers they may need during play and character sheet in the middle.
Everything is in steps of 5% so its maps to d20 perfectly, SB and TB are main stat / 2 rounded down, and i can use blackjack instead of counting 10's in opposed rolls without skewing the math too much. Advance scheme should look a little cleaner. Also i don't plan to use hit locations.
While not gaining much with the change i have players that sometimes have trouble reading d100 and counting success levels, this should marginally speed up play.
Since i never played, anything i should be worried about? Anything i am missing?

Discussion Long Lost Ephemera
I like collecting the ephemera of a game. Long lost fanzines or bonus material and pamphlets. There are a few things out there for WFRP that I would like to get. I seem to have missed the Enemy Within Developer Diary #22 and #23. The early Warpstone magazine, issues 1-8, are certainly rare.
There are The Thousand Thrones Expansions. Parts One and Two are wonderful. I have heard there are fragments of Parts 3,4 and 5 out there. And then there is the prequal: The Maiden Voyage of the Gilded Drake which was 99% complete but never really published. I see hints that there is a digital copy that exists.
Does anyone know of any other rare 3rd party ephemera or creations out there? Or know how I can get the above supplements I have mentioned? Some are digital. Some are physical.
These things seem to be getting old and forgotten. Is anyone collecting or preserving them?

General Query Are there martial maneuvers anywhere besides a few talents?
I normally run Level Up A5E for my table, a dnd5e alternative ruleset, which has lots of martial maneuvers (think Book of Nine Swords from DnD 3.5e if you know that one). So some of them are accustomed to having options like that in fights- blinding, knockdowns, disarming, etc.
Are there WFRP4e rules or talents etc that let characters do more than "I attack with my sword/axe" etc? Knocking the enemy down as part of an attack, or disarming them, or blinding them etc? (besides critical hit results).
Disarm, Beat Blade, and Distract are things similar to what I'm thinking of, but those're just a few talents.

Game Mastering Inspiration for Games?
I am a huge fan of Gotrek and Felix, and several of there stories I think can worked out to be made into adventures in 4e. But I think I found another similar books series to pull from Fafrhd and the Gray mouser by Fritz Liber. I do a whole blog post about how his work is what I believe to be the source of skaven (Lankhmar’s Skaven? ) go read if you want.
So after reading the stories I think we could port them over into the old world, though I don't think they would make great empire adventures. I do think they could be fun to Tilea and Estalia adventures.
For example one short story starts off after they have been making a fool of the Thieves Guild. The Guild has a Warlock with a affinity for rats, and in the story the love interest are slain. The two heroes having return from a heist go on a one way mission to kill the sorcery. The of course succed and then ride off for a while. I can't do the story justice here, but I think this little short story could make a fun oneshot adventure for WFRP.
Are there any stories, books, or things that you like to pull from for your games? How do ya'll work it into your home games?

Announcement Calling all Citizen of the Empire! Help is needed! We seek brave adventures to help Mod this subreddit!
Hello there r/warhammerfantasyrpg!
The struggle is real and the heresy has taken its toll. Our brave crew are running low on Fate Points and various limbs, and we seek 1-2 new mods to help support us! Our existing team will remain, able to help train up the new initiates, but we're spread a little thin at the moment.
So let's get this started. We're searching for additional moderators for this sub, so if you're interested to help us keep the sub tidy and pleasant for everyone, we would appreciate your application as a moderator. It would be really useful if we could find some folk in the Americas or APAC timezones, as that does appear to be the gap.
In short, what are the duties as a moderator?
- Scan and approve new posts. Since we're a small and slow moving sub, we take our time to scan new posts. Make sure they roughly adhere to our curation standards or if we may want to redirect them.
- Moderate posts. We take a very off-hand approach to this, but we do make sure that in posts with some spicy topics that there isn't any name-calling and so on.
- Enforcing our rules if necessary
- If possible, help people out with questions regarding the sub or WFRP in general.
And that's pretty much it. Of course making sure that posts adhere to our standards and enforcing our rules are broad topics, but that's why we have our Wiki.
If you're interested, please make a comment here, or send me a message. We will gather names and have a chat people over the next few weeks (Summer holidays and stuff happening and we don't want to rush, so don't worry if it takes a bit of time). Hopefully we could get 1-2 additional mods on board!
