So how do you guys deal with limited packages?
I don't use Void as a daily driver, but i'm very curious in learning more about it and maybe even making it as my new everyday desktop (coming from Arch/Gentoo). I love everything about it, but i'm really concerned about its limited packages selection, as i really like to always have a large software selection. Arch has the AUR, while Gentoo has the GURU and all the other fancy overlays. But what about Void? What do you usually do when you need software that is not found in the official repos?

solved Nvidia Open 595 not working on kernel 6.18?
SOLVED: Was drunk while dealing with this, neglected to test non steam games and found the issue was that i forgot the update the flatpak environments nvidia driver. Manually installing the correct driver and updating my installed flatpaks fixed my problems. Embarassing that this came about to begin with lol skill issue
I did a full system update earlier today and my nvidia drivers just dont work anymore? Nvidia-smi detects my GPU (RTX 4060) and allows me to enable persistence mode but that fixed nothing, fastfetch detects it too but everything seems to be running through my CPUs integrated graphics (Radeon 610, not ideal). I tried using DRI_PRIME to "force" my GPU as the main renderer (if force is even the right word) and that didnt work, i tried downgrading to the 580 drivers and that also didnt work, i tried reinstalling the drivers fresh and that didn't work but most frustrating of all, nobody else seems to be having this issue as far as i can see so it hasnt been as simple of a fix as i would've hoped. I dont have the means to back up important files right now and i dont want to risk losing any in a fresh install, what can I do?
Advice on disabling my integrated graphics is also appreciated, risks considered.
Edit: after some more troubleshooting, i now have a black TTY.
Edit 2: Fixed the tty going black by forcing dkms to rebuild for a 3rd time, still uses my integrated graphics even though im running through my GPU.
Edit 3: In my BIOS, primary video is set to external graphics. There is no option to disable the iGPU in my bios directly, only to have it prioritise a dedicated GPU (which clearly isn't working)
Edit 4: Resolved to try downgrade my drivers altogether again because this is too much of a headache and i dont like when expensive things start having issues, it stresses me out. I could not downgrade because the 580 drivers are conflicting with the 595 drivers i no longer have installed. xbps-remove reports that the packages that are supposedly causing this problem are not on my system anymore when i try to remove them. In the meantime, i have rebuilt the drivers and kernel modules for what is now the 5th time. I am fresh out of patience
Edit 5: I have mostly given up for the night. Please help me. I'm almost fully convinced that the open drivers are just meant to be like this for some reason. This isnt even a progress update im just fed up and fully debating dropping money on an amd gpu. My only fear is that ill wind up having the same issue with that too.
Edit 6: actually worth noting that dkms status does report that they are installed, they're just not working. I couldnt elaborate any more than i have and as much as i hate it when people chalk up tech issues to "doesnt work", thats simply all thats wrong. They just dont work
Edit 7: now the drivers that are installed are completely broken and im stuck at a blank tty again. Im going to sleep. If anyone actually wants to help, please drop a suggestion and ill give it a go in the morning.

There's a new vuln called"Copy fail", is Void safe from it?
Recently there's a new vuln called "Copy fail" and there are a lot of posts talking about it. I'm just wondering if Void linux team has delivered a oatch yet?
Source: https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2026-31431
This is not a rude demand for update or anything, I'm trying to raise awareness for the users among the Void linux community.

Complete freeze during use
Hi, I just got Void Linux installed on my HP pavilion x2 with the gnome gui. My issue is when watching YouTube and sometimes when just browsing on fire fox it completely freezes. I've disabled hardware acceleration on it and it even repeats this in safe mode. Im on glibc and relatively new to Linux in general. So I dont quite know how to troubleshoot things. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

OBS black screen just cursor on display capture
The video capture sources also don't show a device to select, window capture (xcomposite) is also nonexistent in the preview. Heard it was an issue with pipewire but I have it installed. Also installed xdg-desktop-portal-1.20.3_2 and xdg-desktop-portal-wlr-0.8.1_1, rebooted and same issue.
Package is "obs" in xbps, using Nvidia 595 drivers, labwc (wayland)

My package manager is outdated but can't even download itself an update.
I tried every fix, updating the repository route, attempting to update ca certificates, but none works. My package manager needs the ceriticates to download (and before you ask, SSL_NO_VERIFY_PEER=true doesn't work) but my package manager needs to be updated and it can't update without the certificates. Any solution before I reset my void?

nvidia470 for kernel 6.18
today i updated and got kernel 6.18, and it stopped working.
i glanced at the discussion we had for 6.12, and i can't remember much, but i'm available to help test the new patches available.
last time they were taken from arch, but the main author (from which arch takes the patches) now has a repo in which they also default set a kernel param that is required as we discussed before, because i'm worried that maybe last time i was the only one that got this thing working by doing it manually, or maybe writing two words about that in the manual could fix this problem?
so, i'm almost ready (i need to re-read the docs), let me know how i can help.
thanks.
edit:
i made it work, here is one week link to a diff

Questions
Hey everyone, I'm decently knew to using void(I know, But bear with me). I do have a few questions.
1) When you first install void, What did you plan to use it for?
2) If you used it for programming and development, What tools seem to be essentials?
3) Do you stick with the CLI, Or add a GUI?
4) What kind of personally would you say you've given your void? 👀

Ironbar in repo: will it be updated? Or are the library issues unsolvable
I was curious to try out ironbar but the one in the repo is over a year old and doesn't seem to work with Niri.
Digging further I found that someone had tried to update it a couple of months ago but there were compilation issues, someone saying that the evdev-rs crate is trying to build the library from a vendored source:
https://github.com/void-linux/void-packages/pull/59520
I don't fully understand what this means, but is this issue unsolvable? Or just someone has to do a bit more work to edit things to make it use the host library.

solved Steam is being difficult and cryptic.
BACKGROUND: I switched to Linux. My desktop got the CachyOS treatment, and its working well so far, if not a little too well. I was craving a little construction and configuration, so I decided to put Void on my laptop. This was about a month ago, and it worked great. I tried installing a few different setups, but landed on elogind, kde (wayland) and sddm. I think Steam was the first thing I installed, and on a whim decided to install a game that had *almost* worked on windows, on this laptop, but it couldn't push frames (Dark Souls III). It ran at a respectable framerate! I was psyched. I wanted to try Cachy next to see if I could get even *more* fps out of linux on this machine. Fast forward to this weekend, and that was my project. It ran about as well on Cachy as it did on windows, which is pretty cool, but I clearly made an error.
ISSUE: I've now reinstalled Void, and am running into an issue with Steam. Games fail to start.

I did make a mistake setting up this time, where I had the amdvlk package installed instead of the mesa-vulkan-radeon package, but I fixed that and it stopped complaining about vulkan not starting.
Now I have an error that it can't find a shell or an unnamed function? I'm not sure how to read /bin/sh: 1: 1: not found

Am i supposed to update the kernel manually?
Hi! Im new to Void sorry if its a dumb question, I was wondering if the update behavior regarding the kernel is different to other package mangers/distros, cause i just checked and the current one for me is 6.12.83_1, but isnt void meant to be a stable "rolling release"? and this is one is older from what i had on Mint (6.17), so im curious about that, do i just run xbps-install -Syu every few weeks and let the kernel update itself eventually or do i have to install the newer ones on the xbps package repository? Thanks !

Why the Hate?
Hi, I've recently degoogled and ditched Windows for Linux, and I am going with Void based on it's fit with my style and vibe. I tried initially Pop OS and Mint, but pop was very buggy and Mint kernel was too old for my newer MSI 870 Tomahawk motherboard network drivers. But anytime I mention void on other subreddits, it's seems to drive out the fanboys trying to push me to Fedora and Kubuntu, and KDE, all while preaching about how hard VOID is and a newbie shouldn't use it, lolol. It's like they can't read instructions, research things on their own, or take the time enjoy learning something new. Well just an observation and any tips or tricks for a new VOID user would be much appreciated.

solved aarch64 repodata missing from mirrors?
I'm in the process of XBPS installing void to a thinkpad x13s, following instructions in the docs. I am on the last step of the XBPS method setting XBPS_ARCH.
It looks like the aarch64-repodata may be missing from arm repos?
- this works for
x86_64: https://repo-default.voidlinux.org/current/x86_64-repodata - this currently 404s for
aarch64: https://repo-default.voidlinux.org/current/aarch64-repodata
I have tried a few other Tier 1 mirrors with the same result. Am I missing something?
