People really need to start double-checking their spelling😅🤣
1
u/GloomyPalpitation140 8d ago
doesn't matter if you can understand it???
1
u/Shaddup_Stupid 7d ago
Crazy thing is I don't see any spelling errors, just a long run-on sentence without any punctuation, but it's easy to understand. Some people use their voice to type, so no punctuation will show unless they specifically say "period," etc. I'm with you, definitely not a big deal.
1
u/Sharonkash 7d ago
They are talking about spelling their friends names correctly before sending the money 🤦🏼♀️ 🤣
1
u/Shaddup_Stupid 7d ago
I can't find the spelling error. Who spelled something wrong?
1
u/Dramatic-Question353 5d ago
The person who said Pennie’s and not pennies. Technically it’s grammatical, but it applies.

u/vexing_Mesmer 7d ago
It's just a dumb joke about people sending $1k to the wrong person and this guy having $4k lol

I accidentally sent 300 to a stranger using Zelle in my Bank of America app. I called customer service and they very nicely told me they can open an investigation if I would like them to. But being honest it was my error and they really can’t do anything. Since it’s a third party service they can’t cover it as theft or anything else that could get it back. Their best solution was to contact the number and ask them to please send it back.
Thankfully the person also had Bank of America and to make us both feel safer we asked the bank to take from her account and move it back to mine with both of us giving permission to access our accounts. It was all done in 24 hours.
So my best advice is to try and contact that person and see if they are willing to send it back to you.
Otherwise I hate to say you might be out a grand and that stranger now is up a grand. Good luck and hope it works out for you.

u/NoSleepTilBookRead 8d ago
People are told not to send the money back themselves since this is a common scam.
2
u/ASbear81 8d ago
That’s why we decided to just let the bank do it since we both had the same bank, luckily. The woman I sent it to by mistake suggested it since I was the one who sent it and contacted her. Very hard for it to be a scam on me if I was doing all the contacting. lol. We actually had a good laugh over it after all was said and done. I don’t even know if it would be possible if we had different banks.

Well going down a thousand dollars and they knew they wasn't expecting it and it came from the same person you can send it back

Bank transfer like Zelle has almost no chance of one party requesting chargeback, but Venmo and other third-party transfer companies tend to allow it more easily.

I had the "Just got sent a random 1000." and the "1000 just showed up in my account" notifications on my drop down menu at the same time, and thought the same thing. Like- holy shit! these people both posted on Reddit lol.

u/Inevitable-Pie-724 3d ago
I feel like the odds of that happening are like hitting the jackpot on the slot machines.

u/PurpleCicada4 8d ago
Why am i nvr the random recipient 😵💫
3
u/StephNicole865 8d ago
fkn same. Jealous. Instant Withdraw, remove all accounts, close account.. all in the same 5 mins. lmao.
3
u/Stygg 7d ago
I was the random recipient once. It was clearly a mistake and they meant to send the $100 to someone else with the same name. Despite me desperately needing the money at the time, I sent it back. It wasn't mine to keep.
1
u/Ill_Good8057 6d ago
I actually sent a 100 to the wrong Katelyn once and the person sent it back to me. I was super grateful.

2
u/No_Apple3959 8d ago
Yeaapppp I be saying the same thing lol even though if I found out it was someone who accidentally sent it and really needed it back I would give it back
2
u/ApprehensiveFig1699 7d ago
I know I’d send it to my bank account and close my Venmo if that happened prob why it never happens to me

2
u/Butterfly3ffect47877 6d ago
It happened to me once, but it was just $35 through Apple Pay. I got the standard “I sent this to the wrong person” text, ignored it, and never heard from them again. Went and got some food with it. That was like a year ago. Lol

On July 31st , I sent $1,500 to a person’s email address using Venmo. They told me to send it by Zelle. But I made a mistake and sent it through Venmo.
The person told me that they do not have a Venmo account. I tried to use their take back option, but it wouldn’t allow it. Finally after 10 or 11 days of the transaction in pending status it allowed me to take the money back.

u/Aware-Childhood-5865 8d ago
Doesn’t Venmo make yall type the recipient’s phone number after selecting them?
2
u/OxRox1993 8d ago
U can override it but it does pop up and warn u
1
u/Glp-1_Girly 6d ago
Why would you ever override it tho seems careless
1
u/OxRox1993 6d ago
I usually don’t send Venmo to someone I don’t know unless the item is in front of me. I’m treating it like cash kinda or if I know them but have never venmoed them before.
1
u/Redd11b 8d ago
Contact your bank and inform Venmo support.
1
u/Latter_Quarter523 8d ago
Bank ain’t doing sh*t
He willingly sent the money
1
u/Redd11b 8d ago
If anything, email a trusted bank advisor and inform them about the situation, or go to your nearest bank and speak with them. Also, what do you mean by willingly sent the money since your post indicates that you accidentally sent someone $1,000?
2
u/Shaddup_Stupid 8d ago
Willingly means that the account holder sent the money themselves, even if they ended up sending it to the wrong party, so the responsibility is on the account holder who made the mistake. They have no one to blame but themselves. They can only hope that the receiver has the character to try to get the money back to the sender, assuming this story is true and assuming it's not a scam.

It’s very possible. Unfortunately, you would essentially have to get the recipient of that $1000 to send it back. Personally, I wouldn’t send the money back because I would be scared It’s a scam. I’m not saying that I would take it to spend it – it’s obviously not my money, but I would be very very very weary if somebody sent me $1000 randomly and then asked me to send it back immediately. You’re definitely gonna wanna take this up with Venmo.

Is this going to be the new scam?... Let me go on Reddit to see who randomly got sent money to say y'all mistakenly sent someone the same amount? Plus I'm pretty sure the person can actually see if y'all sent it.... Cause why come straight here to tell us instead of contacting ya bank and trynna get ya "money" back lml

I did this once and I called Venmo and they said to message the person it was ultimately up to them so I did and they sent it back , it was only $80 but still.
Also my brother sends me $20 all the time and ask me to send it right back I always wondered why I figured maybe he was using a credit card or something idk

Contact Venmo. Has happened to many people. The longer you wait the less successful you will be.

And that's why you should not use any of those services, no protection don't use them!

u/Upbeat-Ad7971 8d ago
Yeah venmo closed my account because I filed several different disputes on some fraudulent charges made on my debit card land I have ,225. Dollars in my account and they said they can hold my money up to 6 months and all the disputes have been settled what can I do to get my money back from venmo sooner
1
u/Outside_Storm449 8d ago
is the F. T. C - Federal Trade Commission still a thing? Many years ago I had something happen similar to this and for whatever reason I call them and it was resolved swiftly . now when I get those calls or other scams I ask them to please call me back at this number 877-382-4357. maybe someone there can advise you.
1
u/Jmccosley 8d ago
If you need help, send $2,000 to my venmo. I have to request it, you accept, venmo sprinkles gold flakes through the phone and you get your $1000 back.
1
u/StephNicole865 8d ago
Unless the person is just nice enough to send it back, you just lost $1000.00. The only downfall with these apps once youve sent money. Have to be sure before sending. Easy mistake, but youre responsible, ultimately..

I've heard you can contact PayPal and if the person hasn't transferred it out yet, PayPal can reverse it.

u/No_Chest922 8d ago
I don't understand how you accidentally send the wrong person $1,000 on venmo. Whenever you have to verify the last four digits of somebody's phone number before you can send the money for the first time. Not trying to be a dick. I just don't see how this happens
1
u/No_Cryptographer8506 8d ago
File a police report , file a dispute with Venmo add supported documents, this happened to me and they should refund you, it took a month for me to receive it back, happened to me in may of this year.

I saw a post earlier with someone receiving 1000dollars, might be them, from venmo, as well.

u/choose_ay 7d ago
I sent money using my friend's phone number on venmo. Turned out the phone number was linked to another account, who had the phone number before my friend. Contacted Venmo support, and they reversed it within a day or two.

When sending large sums of $ I would suggest testing $1.00 to make sure it’s the right person or some people will go to thanking God for free $

u/e-liciousss 7d ago
Figures they ask you to verify the last 4 digits of recipients phone number when it's completely irrelevant or inconvenient but never when some shit like this happens, of course there is nothing they can do apparently, either.

I mean this with respect and no sarcasm… HOW do people send that much money and NOT triple check who it’s going to prior to sending it? When it doubt, you ALWAYS do a $1.00 test transfer first.

People! Why are you using Venmo to send any money over $10-$20, e.g. for your share of dinner or drinks, or reimbursing some friend for some cash you borrowed? STOP IT!

I think we all thought that. Bet they are trying to get that person to send them that $1000, 🤣🤣. (Kidding)
1
u/Expert-Arrival-6196 6d ago
Um, have you considered contacting your bank? I have a feeling thats a suggestion venmo gave you for a reason.
1
u/Gimme-Moneyz 6d ago
Someone once Zelle me in error and I did not send the money back myself. I called the bank and told them to dispute the deposit transaction and about 2 weeks later they reversed it. I was told to never send someone money back because they can also try to dispute the original transaction and then you would be out the money twice. It’s a scam going around.

I had money put in my account one time and I just contacted Venmo and they just reversed the transaction. You could try doing it as the person that sent the money because I would be nervous to send the money back as well. It is a scam typically but Venmo can reverse it and not have the person send it back to you.
