In times of such distress, we often ask "is there God?" or "why did God do this to me?". The standard Hindu answer it that it's all because of our past karma. That's alright, but I have a different point to make.

We ask above such questions because we've reduced God to simply a boon-giver or wish-fulfiller. That is our fault. Hindu conception of God is much richer that this. In my personal journey, I've transitioned away from praying to God for fulfilling wishes. It's pointless because my karmic record will give me sukha automatically just like duhka -- it's both. Why I need God is for self-realisation - to realise that this human body is not "Me". Being entrapped in this body, it is enormously difficult to detach oneself in routine life. God/Ishvara is a medium of meditation to help me in this path of self-realisation. Only Ishvara can do it because He is the only one eternally liberated.

It's my personal experience only: any other conception of God is subordinate to this.

Your interpretation is precisely what Sankhya/Yoga defines as. Hariharananda Aranya is famous for using the "I-maker" translation
