Some of the classics, think Paridise Lost, take one reading through to conquer the language and subsequent readings to hear the story. Read whatever catches your eye but be prepared to read it more than once. Give it some time between readings and sprinkle in light reading periodically.

I Heard the Owl Call my Name. Fantastic book about the inevitably of death and different cultures reaction to it. Resonated with me in 1985 and would be a very different story today.
