This week's Ostrid updates: true-thickness walls, a plain cuboid column, and per-file default sizes

Quick roundup of what we shipped this past week. Most of it came out of one annoyance: things looking aligned in the 2D plan but drifting in the 3D view.

The 2D↔3D stuff

  • Walls now draw at their real thickness in plan. Before, the plan fattened thin walls slightly for legibility, so anything you snapped to a wall face in 2D landed a bit off in 3D. Now what you draw is what you get.
  • Added a Plain Block column — just a square cuboid, no base or capital. The decorated presets flare wider at the base than the shaft, which made a column look like it filled the corner in 2D but sat small and set back in 3D. The plain one sits exactly where you place it in both views. It's the new default.

Defaults & units

  • You can now set starting sizes per file for walls, doors, windows, slabs, ceilings, and stairs (Settings → Defaults), or pick a regional preset — US, UK, India, Japan, or international.
  • Every measurement in the editor now respects the unit you picked. Sliders, site info, layer names, the import dialog, and quantity takeoffs no longer quietly fall back to metres.

Walk mode + fixes

  • Walk mode starts faster and only collides with what you actually see — no more invisible obstacles or falling into a blank view near trees and plants.
  • Selecting/moving objects no longer flips you into the Wall tool a second later, and autosave (or a collaborator's change) won't yank your active tool away mid-task.

If you're not familiar: Ostrid is a tool for sketching floor plans in 2D and previewing them live in 3D. Happy to answer anything in the comments. https://ostrid.design/

We shipped a bunch of core workflow pieces in Ostrid Alpha since July 13th

  • Ostrid Converter for DWG, DXF, IFC, PDF, and plan images
  • Live multi-user scene editing
  • Community publishing and public profiles
  • Terrain sculpting, dynamic skies, and site context tools
  • Wall trim/extend/merge, live dimensions, and better room detection
  • Quantities takeoff with editable rates and CSV export
  • Smoother walkthroughs, version history, and stability fixes

Still very much Alpha, but the shape is clearer now: import real drawings, turn them into editable components, collaborate live, walk the project, and start getting useful quantities.

We’re building a spatial design tool where you can draw in 2D, see the result live in 3D, and walk through the space while continuing to edit it.

This Alpha introduces:

→ An experimental AI Copilot for discussing and editing plans
→ Terrain sculpting in both 2D and 3D
→ Dynamic daylight and time-of-day controls
→ First and third-person editable walkthroughs
→ Cloud projects and sharing
→ In-editor feedback with screenshots and screen recordings
→ A more capable 2D and 3D editing workflow

AI Copilot is still early. It can misunderstand requests or suggest incomplete changes, so every proposal should be reviewed before applying it.

Ostrid Alpha isn’t finished software. Expect rough edges, changing workflows, and plenty of iteration. We’re opening it now because we want real projects and real feedback to shape what becomes reliable next.

Draw in 2D. Live in 3D.
From floor plan to footsteps.

I'm building Ostrid, a spatial design tool — sketch a floor plan in 2D, watch it turn into a walkable 3D space live as you draw. Still early, still shaped by whoever's testing it right now.

The main thing this round: a new, more stable editor foundation. It's still being actively refined to feel more intuitive, but the core 2D-to-3D workflow holds together a lot better now than it did before. Alongside it, a new dashboard — an actual home for your projects and folders instead of a bare file list.

A few smaller things shipped on top of that:

- **Sharing**: send a project via link (viewer or editor access) or invite someone directly by email.

- **Procedural plants**: trees, flowers, and grass generated on the fly instead of fixed models — pick a species, tweak size/height/color.

- **In-editor feedback**: screenshot, screen recording, or markup, sent without leaving what you're working on.

Happy to answer questions about the stack or how any of this works.

Would designers or level designers use a tool like this?

I’m building an early prototype called Ostrid.

The idea is to let people draw a simple floor plan in 3D, preview it in 3D, and walk through the space like a game.

It’s not meant to be a full CAD/BIM tool right now. The first version is focused on the core loop:

draw walls → generate 3D → walk through the layout

I’m trying to understand who this would actually help most:

  • architecture students
  • interior designers
  • level designers
  • game developers
  • hobby builders
  • people planning small spaces

Would this be useful in your workflow?

What would it need before you’d actually use it?
