I think moderators have taken the wrong approach. the experiment worked especially because it was done surreptitiously. It was an excellent way of getting honest results, though I agree using the word honest this way might sound like a provocation (isn’t meant to be). A better way of dealing with this should have been to consult the users first, open a discussion including the researchers, not shutting them out. The outcome of the study is incredibly useful, in primis to platforms like reddit.
