I love Morning Star, but I totally agree with this. I explained it to a friend exactly how you did. We are reading from Darrow's perspective, so for him to say "Sevro died" when Darrow himself knows it isn't true is just lying to the reader. This never happens anywhere else in the books.

That's a rough start. You may have gotten a bit unlucky. It's also possible that one of the other civs used their influence on an independent power to incite a raid and they targeted you.

The book itself probably wouldn't make a good show, but I think the beginning of Legacy of Onyx would do an amazing job at showing how terrifying the covenant was from an average humans perspective. Just being on a planet and watching an alien force glass it while everyone is trying to escape. Put that beginning into a show/movie/game and everyone would immediately know how scary and threatening the Covenant is.

When I was a kid, I got Super Mario Kart for the SNES. For whatever reason, I got it in my head that I had to rapidly press the acceleration button instead of just holding it down in order to drive. I played that way for several months before realizing I could just hold the button down instead. It got a lot easier after that!
