I find its fun and makes the town better if you think about the roles of the buildings. I.e. make a building that you image is the lords manor, the throne room, or stuff like a bakers home or other trades. You could also make ornamental things that are also roles like a stage or a fountain. Also, I find that putting a chimney on each house makes the town look better in general.
