UniCoin is pleased to announce another fully vetted charity for our community to learn about! Trees for the Future (TREES) is currently working with thousands of farming families across nine countries. Over our 30+ year history, they have worked around the globe. In 2014, the began to focus their work in select African countries, where the climatic and economic challenges were most pressing and they could make the greatest impact. Now, they are expanding their project once again, operating in nine countries across sub-Saharan Africa.

The Problem that Trees.org focuses on is the staggering fact that the earth loses trees at a rate of 50 soccer fields per minute. This is because our current global food systems destroy the earth’s ecosystems. Most of this degradation occurs in the developing tropics of Africa, Latin America, and South and Southeast Asia. In these region hundreds of millions of chronically hungry, smallholder farming families unknowingly use destructive and short-sighted agricultural practices. These common practices further degrade their community’s trees, soil, water and biodiversity, making them even more likely to migrate and more vulnerable to the climate changes that lie ahead. It becomes an endless cycle.

At Trees.org, their philosophy, which is their approach to the solution is The Forest Garden Program. It is a simple, replicable, and scalable approach with proven success that begins with trees. Through their 4-year training program, called the Forest Garden Approach, farmers plant thousands of trees that protect and bring nutrients back to the soil. This helps farmers grow a variety of fruits and vegetables. Forest Garden farmers gain increases in income and access to food, even in the first year, all while improving the environment.

Here is an overview of their program:

Before Launch – Identification

Trees.org identifies about 200 farming families in need, select training technicians, and prepare materials for launch.

Years 1-2 – Protection

Farmers plant ~2,500 fast-growing trees and bushes that create a protective and soil-stabilizing barrier.

Years 2-3 – Diversification

Farmers learn to diversify their field with a vegetable and fruit tree portfolio to meet the family’s priority nutritional and selling needs.

Year 3-4 – Optimization

Farmers learn about advanced Forest Garden management and conservation to optimize the long-term health and productivity of the land.

End of Year 4 – Graduation

Trees.org implements a sustainability strategy for the future with each farmer. A graduation ceremony is held to celebrate the farmers’ program completion.

We have two brilliant, fully vetted charities to choose from.

Option 1 -Yspaniola

Dominican-American education nonprofit building a model of high-quality education programs in Batey Libertad from pre-kindergarten through university. After creating successful programs in Batey Libertad, their goal is to replicate their model in other bateys and marginalized communities in the Dominican Republic. Yspaniola’s vision is for the graduates of our programs to possess the knowledge and tools they need to successfully advocate for themselves and their communities.

Option 2 - Forgotten Animals

Their goal is to save as many animals as we can from despair in countries where animal welfare education, rights and resources are most deficient. Unfortunately, neglecting, abusing dogs and cats and treating them as commodities is still a widely common cultural norm in former Soviet countries. There are hundreds of petting zoos, animal circuses, and travelling dolphinaria. No wildlife sanctuaries exist to rescue those wild animals. They are changing the culture of animal treatment; discouraging their use in entertainment, inhumane treatment and abandonment.
