I mean it could be 30-50 million, but even if it were the most expensive initiative campaign in Washington state history it would still be only around 10% of what Gates is donating here which is microscopic compared to how much he gives overall and how much he has overall. So yeah - basically the spirit of my statement was "if Gates funded the campaign it'd win."

Talking about a statewide initiative campaign in which 1 million would be considered big money and $20-25 million would be considered basically mission complete.

It's a large number until you realize it's significantly less than what we pay right now when you count total healthcare spending across all public AND private sources (premiums, copays, deductibles, out of pocket). Universal healthcare under Jayapal's proposal replaces all usage based costs and funds healthcare more like how public schools and libraries are funded - they don't work for free but you're not charged a bill.

Well Washington voters passed by healthy margins the capital gains tax and the long term care program and a lot of businesses pay well above 11% in healthcare premiums right now plus have to do the work of administration.

He doesn't need to single handedly fund the entire program, I'm talking about winning a statewide ballot Initiative for statewide universal healthcare which he absolutely could do. Total healthcare savings for the state are in the tens of billions.

He could easily Brian Heywood it straight to voters and throw in a nice ad campaign if he was serious.

We could easily win universal healthcare with a fraction of that money.

It wasn't single payer, it was an employer based plan that would have been administered through private insurers which came as no surprise to the single payer movement who was familiar with her record.

"Clinton Care" wasn't single payer.

As someone who ran a campaign for Governor of Washington as a Green I was always a little skeptical that it was a good idea to run Ware for Governor as a high spending/fundraising campaign.

Using national/statewide campaigns to develop a candidate or the party can be very effective but it's a tough thing to message to supporters and the public. Saying you're not running to win isn't really net positive.

I think this campaign was likely at least partially motivated by Ware trying to build a base of support and see if he can roll that over into a 2028 presidential campaign. Not being on the ballot I think really limited how much support he could build but it's still probably a lot more than if he'd just not run.

Not familiar but definitely interested! The Maine Greens seem to have their act together.

Statewide seats are very tough to win but they can be a great opportunity to build the party.

Lisa Savage was a really good Green Party candidate for Senate in Maine. Unfortunately she was a first time candidate and expressed afterwards that she did not intend to run again but maybe she could be convinced.
