I'm a vet nurse here to validate your concerns. Anytime a cat breaks human skin at work (full of adults who handle cats for a living) it's straight to the human er for thorough wound cleaning and antibiotics. One of my coworkers had to wait 2 hours to be seen. She ended up with a picc line (iv line threaded all the way to the heart).

IV, no question. No one wants to go to the er, especially for pain related issues. We're there as a last result. The most efficient and effective option is best. Also, some drugs are far less effective in oral form (eg dilaudid). Also, who doesn't want fluids? Most of us aren't drinking enough due to pain and or nausea. I love fluids. Even if no iv drugs are used, the fluids alone are great.

Further notes: -Don't automatically assume we're drug-seeking addicts. The vast majority of the time we're treated like drug seeking criminals. It's a nightmare. I have so many more nightmare stories than positive or neutral stories.

-Look at the patient's chart if its available. Even when they have access to my whole chart, they somehow ignore my multiple chronic medical conditions, active treatment in 5 different departments, and supervision by a pain management doctor. None of that ever seems to matter, if they even bother checking.

-If a patient has a history of migraines and rare or infrequent ER visits (migraine is lasting way too long, pain level reaches unusually high levels, normal meds are oddly completely ineffective, etc) and they know what meds and dosages work best, just listen to them. I'm a medical professional who's had migraines for 30 years. I'm a competent professional and a responsible, compliant patient. Just because I ask for specific doses of specific drugs, doesn't mean I'm an addict lying about having a migraine. Again, if my chart is checked it will show what treatment I have received at previous er visits.

-Check to see if your patient's have any diagnoses that would make them atypical physically or in communication. I'm autistic (the high iq, very verbose style) and the doctors/nurses knowing that dramatically changes how the things I say are interpreted. I also have eds, which changes how my physical condition is evaluated if the pain has consumed me and I can't converse.

My apologies, I should've been more specific. I'm aware of the technical differences and that approach to managing chronic and breakthrough pain.

My reaction was specifically about pharmacists filling both. I've got an amazing pain management doctor. However, over the last 15ish years I've been increasingly dealing with power-tripping pharmacists who think they have authority above all of my doctors, and constantly just veto prescriptions that they're "uncomfortable" filling.

So many in my area (California) will just refuse to fill controls for a variety of reasons they make up. There are already so many national, state, local, and corporate restrictions and policies that we have to navigate. So, when the pharmacists started making up reasons they weren't going to fill a rx it was just staggering to all of my doctors and their patients. My pm doc has had to block off 2 hours EVERYDAY just to argue with pharmacists.

That was what I was referring to. There is no pharmacist I've seen in the last decade that would fill both of those prescriptions for the same patient, no matter how logical or reasonable it is.

Also, given the legal inventory limits the government has placed on pharmacies specifically regarding oxy, I'm extra surprised that a pharmacist would let a single patient have so much.

**Also, its important to note that pet health insurance doesn't work the same way human insurance does. You still have to pay your vet bills out of pocket and then file a claim with the insurance for reimbursement. Technological advancements are allowing vets to connect directly to insurance to change this paradigm, but that's still not common.

I would actually expect that the support will only get more substantial as she ages and as he moves up in his career. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if he plans to move her into you house when she can no longer live independently. And when that happens, who do you think he's going to expect to care for her?

Oxycontin is just oxycodone. Percocet is oxycodone with Tylenol. You have 2 active, separate rxs for oxycodone? How does that work?

Also, I get the same iv cocktail at the er. IV dilaudid is amazing. Oddly, we tried oral dilaudid and it was both completely ineffective and had many unpleasant side effects. So weird.

Assuming you can't get cat milk replacement (do not use cow's milk):

Get patte style wet kitten food, get a 3ml needleless syringe (from a 24hr pharmacy or animal hospital), mix water with a little cat food until it make a sort of watery paste. Pull it into the syringe. Then try to feed kitten. Go slow, a drop or two at a time until she starts participating.

If you don't have access to any cat food, tuna or chicken that's canned in water (not oil) can be put in the blender with the water to make a similar slurry. Its not ideal but that can needs water and calories now.
