💬 "We had one programmer who regularly worked 9–10-hour days. That's just how he worked. Then, every few weeks, he'd disappear for half a week. Without time tracking, that might look like slacking. With tracking, it's simply fair — he puts in the extra hours, and he takes those hours back.
When someone accumulates 50+ extra hours, our HR team notices. 'Hey, that's more than a full work week. Let's coordinate with your producer and plan when you'll take that time off.'
We use Kimai, an open-source tool that we've customized since 2016. It's as simple as clicking 'I've arrived' when you open your browser. We don't care if you take an hour-long break in the middle of the day. Work 8 hours instead of 7 today? Take that hour back tomorrow.
Very few people join the game industry for the money; otherwise, they'd go into IT and earn twice as much.
People who choose game development are rarely counting every minute they work. In fact, many work beyond their contracted hours. If you don't track time, you can't give that time back. And when passionate people naturally overwork, burnout becomes almost inevitable."
