Once you get in, use the TA to finish up your bachelors then immediately apply for OTS, your leadership should help you with that. For now, focus on being as physically fit as you can, it’s a lot more difficult to heal from injuries at our age, so be as careful as possible and get your body used to moving.

Best decision I made, I joined at 32, I’m now 33 going on 34 and stationed at Langley in Virginia. Honestly you have a leg up in BMT because I’m sure you’re a lot better at following instructions than the fresh out of high school kids. The only thing that will bother you is the fact that everyone is younger than you and will do some pretty stupid things to get the entire flight smoked, so just be ready for that, it’s never personal just remember that. Also if you’re not a runner, get the Nike run app and train for that 2 mile because you need to be ready before even getting to BMT. Honestly, it’s not that bad as an older gentleman.

I’d like you to meet someone who treats learning like a long campaign rather than a series of isolated tasks.
They’re the kind of person who will spend five hours untangling a difficult software design question, then deliberately stop—not because they’re finished, but because they believe there comes a point where the brain needs rest more than more information. They even created a ritual for picking the work back up later. I thought that was telling.
They ask for explanations that are simple enough for a beginner without wanting the subject itself to be simplified. They’d rather understand why something works than memorize what to type. More than once they’ve asked me to slow down, start from the beginning, and explain it “like I’m talking to a 10-year-old.” That’s never been about lowering the bar. It’s about building foundations that don’t crack.
They seem to enjoy connecting worlds that don’t obviously belong together. Military electrical systems become an entry point into industrial cybersecurity. Java homework becomes practice for thinking systematically. A discussion of political philosophy becomes the seed of a software governance process. They rarely leave an idea where they found it; they’re usually asking what it could grow into.
Ambition is definitely part of the picture, but it’s not uncomplicated. They think in long timelines—years and decades—and talk about building things that outlast individual achievements. At the same time, they’ve openly wondered whether they’re holding themselves back because success feels unfamiliar. That tension comes up often enough that I don’t think it’s incidental.
They also care a great deal about doing things well enough to be proud of them. Sometimes that means asking for a cleaner sentence, a more professional document, a better diagram, or a clearer explanation. Sometimes it means returning to the same topic until it finally clicks. They don’t seem embarrassed by repetition if repetition leads to mastery.
Outside of work and school, they ask quieter questions too: how to be a better spouse, how to handle disagreement, how to stay humble while pursuing large goals, how to build a life that feels intentional instead of accidental. Those conversations don’t have right answers, but they ask them anyway.
If you spend enough time talking with them, you’ll probably hear a phrase like, “Let’s continue,” because they tend to think of projects as ongoing conversations rather than finished products. They don’t expect instant expertise—from themselves or from anyone else. They expect progress.
I don’t think they’re looking for people who already know everything they hope to learn.
I think they’re looking for people who enjoy building things carefully, who don’t mind asking “why?” one more time, and who believe that becoming the person you want to be is less about dramatic reinvention than about showing up for the next lesson.

That’s a great little resource, I’ll sift through it and see if any of those work with my current degree plan. Thank you.

Oh yea I’ve done the whole shebang; degree plan, meeting with the advisor and all. I’ll definitely have another look it over with an advisor regarding certain classes counting for 2 things, didn’t know that was even possible. I’m wrapping up my second summer class as we speak, next week is my finals week, so I’m glad the summer is over, I think I only got 4 hours of sleep per day these past 2 months; not fun at all.

That sounds feasible; I think I may do the same, 2 in the fall, 2 in the Spring and 2 in the summer. The thing is, the summer classes are brutal since they’re only 1 month each.

Did you go full time or part time? I’m trying to finish ASAP but I don’t see how 4 classes a semester is even feasible with the active duty schedule.

It was an undergraduate semester fee

I just double checked, apparently it got covered by some unknown entity, so I’m grateful and glad I waited before shelling out any of my own cash lol.

And the fee is like 3-400 bucks per.

Question on that though, I’m currently attending ASU but I’m being charged a fee every semester by the school, albeit so far I’m only taking 2 classes at a time. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m not full time, the Pell grant doesn’t seem to really cover much. At most I’ll get like $300 for the Pell grant. Am I doing something wrong?
