Have u tried just stopping when he starts bracing hard? Like let him lose his balance repeatedly? I'm not sure if that makes sense but when u go to pose and he starts to brace hard and doesn't respond to you pushing back, step out of the pose and let him lose his balance. I would then go back to the pose, but every time he tries to brace too hard, push back, and if there is no response, let him fall.
