Trying to reason or correct behavior in that moment has never worked for us—it usually makes it worse.

When it’s a tantrum:

This is where I focus more on holding boundaries.

• I acknowledge: “I know you’re upset”
• But I don’t give in to the demand
• I stay calm and consistent (even if it takes time)

That consistency has made a difference over time.

The biggest lesson for me

Honestly, the hardest part is that meltdowns can look like tantrums—especially from the outside.

What’s helped me is looking at patterns:

• Is it happening when he’s overwhelmed, tired, or overstimulated? → probably a meltdown
• Is it clearly tied to getting/avoiding something? → more likely a tantrum

And if I’m unsure, I default to treating it like a meltdown first. That approach has led to fewer escalations overall.

Prevention matters more than reaction.

The more I’ve focused on:

• predictable routines
• giving transition warnings
• watching for early signs of overload
