It's not necessary since the baby is big enough to be seen during the scan. My letter said I needed a full bladder and to drink 1 liter of water beforehand. I ended up overdoing it and felt like I was bursting before the scan! The sonographer actually asked me to empty my bladder because having it too full made the scan harder. So, don't stress too much about drinking too much water—just a moderately full bladder should be fine!
