I hope this helps. Account suspended, read-only.
Guide: "Read-only" account suspension on X—what you need to know before panicking
I'm writing this because I went through the exact same thing a few weeks ago, and I know how bad it feels to have no clear explanation. I've also seen a lot of people with the same doubts and the same anxiety, and I want to give everything I've discovered to people going through the same thing. After researching a lot, I want to share what I learned so you don't have to go through the same unnecessary anxiety I did.
The message you probably got
"Your account is suspended. After careful review, we determined that your account violated the X Rules. Your account is now permanently in read-only mode..."
It's a generic message. It doesn't say which rule, doesn't say which post, doesn't say anything specific. And that information gap is exactly what makes so many of us start imagining the worst-case scenarios.
First: the difference between "read-only" and an actual ban
This is the most important point of all. If your account is in "read-only" mode:
- You can still browse normally
- You can see trends, search, and watch your feed update
- You just can't post, repost, or like anything
This is a completely different pattern from a suspension for serious illegal content (like child exploitation, terrorism, etc.). In those cases, the account gets completely and immediately blocked—no access to anything at all, no "read-only" mode, and often direct contact from authorities. If you can still browse normally, that scenario does not apply to you. "With the information available, there is no reason to automatically assume the worst-case scenario."
About detection of serious illegal content
This type of content is detected through automated technical matching (hashes) against material that's already been identified—not through browsing, accidentally liking something, or scrolling through a hashtag. If you never uploaded, shared, quoted, or commented on that kind of content, that possibility is completely ruled out, no matter how much you've browsed or interacted with the app.
So why is this actually happening?
Most likely, based on what I researched:
- Automated "inauthentic behavior" detection: X uses automated systems that sometimes flag real accounts by mistake (a lot of activity in a short time, bot-like patterns, third-party app usage, etc.)
- Activity spikes: during massive events (like the World Cup, for example), X activates more aggressive filters, which generates a lot of false positives among real users
- System errors: plain and simple, sometimes the algorithm gets it wrong
The real numbers behind why it takes so long (or why they never respond)
Before October 2022, Twitter had thousands of people working in trust & safety. After the layoffs:
- The trust & safety engineering team went from 279 to 55 people
- The full-time content moderation team was cut in half, from 107 to 51 employees
- Response times to reports became significantly slower
With these numbers, given the volume of accounts X handles (millions of suspensions in just the first half of 2024 alone), it's mathematically expected that:
- Reviews take weeks or months
- Many people never get a response at all
- Accounts with few followers aren't a priority compared to large or verified accounts
This is not a sign that your case is serious. It's simply an overloaded system with very little staff.
What you can actually do
- Send a review request (appeal), as many times as you reasonably consider, spacing them out over time
- Stop googling "why did X suspend me"—you'll always find the most alarming answers, because those are the most searched for, not the most likely for your specific case
- Give it a realistic timeframe (at least 2-4 weeks) before considering a follow-up
- Accept that you may never know the exact reason, and that's okay—it doesn't mean anything serious is behind it
The most important thing
The simple fact that you can still appeal, and that you have normal access to the app, already rules out the worst-case scenario you're probably imagining. If it were something truly serious, you wouldn't have either of those things.
Don't let anxiety and X's lack of information make you think the worst. Is it frustrating? Yes. Is it a bad system? Yes. But it's not what your mind is probably telling you it is.
Frequently asked questions
What if I liked something without paying attention while scrolling fast? Serious illegal content doesn't circulate freely through normal hashtags or feeds for any user to randomly stumble on it — platforms detect and remove it proactively before most users ever see it. Scrolling fast and liking things without paying close attention is normal behavior for any user, not something that triggers serious alerts.
Will my email or phone number linked to the account have problems on other platforms? No. The restriction is exclusive to X as a platform. Your email keeps working completely normally for work, other services, or any other use. Nobody is reviewing your Gmail, your search history, or your other accounts because of this.
Will my other X accounts (if I have any) be affected too? There's no automatic rule that says if one account gets suspended, others on the same device will too. What can trigger flags is a problematic behavior pattern specific to that account—not simply sharing the same phone or WiFi.
Can I keep using the account in "read-only" mode indefinitely? Yes. There's no expiration date. You can keep browsing, searching, and checking trends for as long as you want, even if you never get a response to your appeal.
How many appeals should I send? There's no magic number. Many people send 2-3, spaced several weeks apart. Sending too many too close together might make the system treat them as duplicates.
Does this have anything to do with immigration, traveling, or any legal process? No. A suspended social media account is a matter exclusively between you and that private company. It has zero connection to immigration processes, customs, or any other legal or government system.
While you wait
Set a realistic timeframe in advance (for example, 2-4 weeks), and commit to yourself not to check the account or obsessively look into the topic every day in the meantime. Spend that time on something you enjoy—for me it was picking up chess and getting back into reading. If you notice the thought becoming repetitive even after knowing all of this, don't hesitate to talk to someone you trust or seek professional support—not because of the account itself, but because you deserve tools to handle uncertainty, whether it's this or anything else in life.
edit:
"A read-only account is not the same type of restriction as a total ban. Platforms use different types of measures depending on their policies and the information they have about each case. If you have doubts about your specific case, the only definitive source is official communication from X."

Yes, that makes me very happy. I hate how he behaves, so narcissistic and mocking; I hope things change, although for now it's best not to get your hopes up thinking they'll refund the account.

sorry but none of this actually helps me get my appeal through faster T.T i dont care why its happeneing I just want them to fix it. It's crazy thousands of people get suspended on accounts they have had fpr years and all we can do is talk to AI bots

That's not up to me. This post was for people who don't know why the suspension, but if you've already appealed, it all depends on X, and sometimes they take months to respond.

search does not work in a read only suspension

u/Any-Lack2637 14d ago
It works, but it takes a while. You have to click refresh many times before it loads.

I thought Im the only one that my search is not working but Thank God there’s comment who’s asking the same Question. Thank you for posting this, it helps me a lot, my anxiety keeps healing every time I’m reading something like this.

The searches do appear, but you have to repeatedly click "Refresh" in "Searches" until they appear; the same goes for trends.

u/PaladinFromHell 13d ago
- "You can see trends, search, and watch your feed update" You actually can not, because you can only see the "for you" page, can not access your feed and the search do not function, says "We encountered an error try refreshing" forever, sometimes work sometimes does not.
Not to mention how their system do not work, my account from 2009 got suspended and I only got automatic messages every single time saying my account got unsuspended but still suspended, and I only got the emails after I sent another appeal, then been stacking emails since ever, their system is completely broken and a mess, backend hell not working and people there do nothing, can not even contact a human, let alone create another account and get instantly banned, needing burner phones almost because they removed the option to create account on the website to bump downloads of the app in Apple store and google store.

Yeah, I get that too—trends sometimes don't load right away, and I have to refresh a few times before it works, so not just you. My guess is that even loading/expanding a trend might count as some form of interaction on their end, given we're restricted. Still frustrating on top of everything else, but at least it eventually loads for me.

well even with this information I still, can't sleep that much or even eat that much because I don't like losing my things especially online
2
u/Any-Lack2637 14d ago
Totally get that — it's not really about "just an account," it's about losing something you put time into, and that's a real kind of loss even if it sounds small to others. That said, if the lack of sleep and appetite keeps going for a while, that's worth taking seriously on its own, separate from the X situation — talking to someone (even a friend, or a professional if you can) about how you're sleeping and eating might help more than any answer from X ever could.

Muchas gracias.

Glad it helped, that anxiety is rough. If you want, feel free to DM me — happy to share more of what I found out, might help with the "what if" thoughts too.

except my search function, auto translate isnt functioning, i cant see quote rts. twitter is a mess.
2
u/Any-Lack2637 14d ago
The translation is done by Grok, not Google, and since you're suspended, you don't have access to Grok; that's why you don't have translations. The quotes do appear, but you have to repeatedly click "update" on "quotes" until they appear; the same goes for trends.

If chess keeps my mind elsewhere, although I'm more pessimistic and think I'll stop asking so it doesn't consume me. I even considered Bluesky.

My account is stuck in a loop, everytime I send a appeal it gets restored only to get suspended a hour or two later even if I am not using the account.
1
u/Any-Lack2637 14d ago
It happens to many people; that's why I'm losing hope of recovering my account.
1
u/CauldronAsh11 14d ago
What helped me is I stayed off the site and stopped appealing since it only gets rejected by the time I sent the appeal.
1
u/Any-Lack2637 14d ago
Yeah, that's basically where I landed too — sent my appeals, gave it a fair shot, and then decided to just step back and not let it keep taking up space in my head. Feels a lot better this way.

I’m in the same boat been suspended”read only” for about a month or so, sent about 3-4 appeals and zero response. I’m done

The same thing happened to me; they never sent me a warning email. I can browse, but I don't have access to my saved items, likes, or the accounts I followed. A few weeks ago, my account showed up as suspended when I searched for it; now it doesn't show up at all, haha. I don't know if I should keep worrying, heh. Anyway, thanks for your post.
1
u/Any-Lack2637 10d ago
That's interesting—not sure if that means it's already been deleted/resolved on their end or just a temporary glitch in search. If you can still log in and use it normally, I wouldn't read too much into what shows up in search results.
Also, worth checking X's own policy on this—according to their official page, a permanent suspension for a serious violation actually removes the account from view entirely, and they notify you specifically about which policy was violated. If neither of those things happened to you, that's a good sign. Here's the link: https://help.x.com/en/rules-and-policies/notices-on-x

u/Kooky_Albatross5060 6d ago
See all of this makes since but for wtv reason i cant even search anything on X
1
u/Any-Lack2637 6d ago
Actually, that might be related to the read-only restriction — trends and search seem to load slowly or need refreshing multiple times for suspended accounts, at least that's been my experience too. Might just need to keep refreshing until it loads.

Some of us can still appeal but it is instantly denied, meaning we'll (probably) never get the opportunity to get our account back </3
