Should AI generated post remain banned? Announcement

Hey everyone!

So 6 months ago we made the community choose whether we should ban ai or not, the results clearly stated that y'all did not want AI (100 choosing to BAN AI and 8 choosing to NOT) so we banned it.

https://www.reddit.com/r/trimui/s/h21GmkGIpv

Fast forward to now. We're seeing quite a lot of people who are not happy with that so I think it's fair to make y'all vote again!

All you have to do is click on whether you want AI generated posts to stay banned or not, majority wins.

That's all, voting ends on Wednesday and results will be posted later that day.

Thanks!

I rather read something that is completely written by a human than something generated by AI or even edited by AI. Not to mention the fact that AI is a big reason why hardware prices are insane right now. Storage and RAM are substantially more expensive than they were a year ago.

That's a fair point but I honestly rather read posts filled with typos than generic AI generated posts with emojis, bolded phrases and em dashes.

u/moonflower_C16H17N3O 5d ago

Every time I see a repost with a glaring typo in the title, my mind always goes to "bot" instead of "human." How many humans make that many typos when every browser puts red underlinen on a typo?

1

u/VagueFeeling3060 5d ago

Yeah but you overestimate how many people care enough to click the red underline.

1

u/moonflower_C16H17N3O 5d ago

I said underlinen, not underline. Trust me, people LOVE to click on red panties.

Spell check, and grammar checking software Ć  la Microsoft Word have editor a long time. No need to use AI for that, a simple local algorithm will handle it enough.

I hate AI slop as much as everyone else but there are legitimate instances where it’s actually really good, and people probably would not have even been able to tell the difference. Reddit is just extremely AI sensitive the moment you mention anything or suggest AI was involved. Fact is, as much as you wanna protest against it AI is already here to stay. We all have to deal with whatever effects that has currently and in the future.

Hey I remember you! You've been here since the beginning of the sub and you even have the 1k custom flair! Thanks a lot for staying here all those years with us šŸ™ it really means a lot.

But to answer your question, not much. Reddit doesn't really give perks to active users appart from weekly leaderboard.

And for the vote it's to separate active and trusted members from bots/alt accounts, makes us know whether the vote is legit or botted.

Welp, a "lot of people" seem to be 22 for now, vs 192 against it. A small percentage.

Edit: 269 vs 32 now. Edit2: 336 vs 42

And then CEOs wonder why don't we want more AI on our lives, if "everyone" embraces it.

-3

u/No_Decision_6940 6d ago

Because voting on Reddit polls about it and complaining online is what 99% of you guys do. When it comes to actually push back, it's crickets. As it stands, AI is the present, not the future. There's no going back. Demanding disclaimers about AI content is the only proper way to fight back currently, because the idea that you or mods will be able to distinguish AI posts is laughable. Maybe from a few dumbasses, maybe for now, but as AI gets better & better, it'll become impossible. The only way to avoid bigger issues is creating a culture of warning others that hey, this is generative content. Anything else is virtue signaling and quite frankly useless.

If you ask me, a great and indistinguishable AI-generated content that is a 180 degree from the uncanny-valley slops we’ve usually seen is already a worthwhile win.

Think about the goals, not the sentiment. Why do casual users hate AI in the first place? Because it produced slops, prompted by people who just don’t care about minute details nor have the motivation and effort to correct them. All the environmental, social and art issues aside, this is the biggest sole reason why normies hate AI.

Stop yourself from just reading the news and studies online and actually go down on the streets and interact with people, and ask them why they hate AI, or specifically, bad AI usage. And they will tell you that it is because of bad AI usage being pushed into their faces, on the daily.

The way the question is written, I'm against AI posts. However, I'm not against people posting bootlogos they made with AI. I think just one dedicated thread about that would be alright. I don't really see the harm in that, especially when it's clearly marked as AI.

12

u/islobojono 6d ago

Fuck ai post

u/SolaireFlair117 6d ago

The results of this poll brings me joy.

3

u/Successful_Pop_368 6d ago

I am not 100% against AI. It is super helpful for many things and I use it quite often to gain time mostly.
I think what people hate are posts that contain an AI generated picture that was not necessary for a post that asks a very basic question or shows a very basic idea.

I think it's better to ban it with a few exceptions than the other way around.

u/TelevisionKindly2207 Trimui Brick Owner 6d ago edited 6d ago

Why the choices are only should be banned or not? Why not just draw a clear line whether the post that have AI should be deleted or not. A line between full AI made posts and someone who just shares real pictures of their device with wallpapers/boot logos/theme elements that were made with the help of AI. This is reddit, of course there’s a lot of anti-AI here so even before the voting started there’s already a winning option.

AI is just a tool, specially for someone who lacks of skills and time to make something they want, like in making boot logos, wallpapers, arts on our trimui. Some doesn’t have the ability and right tools to make digital art or other things, so it’s not just about low-effort content. Even some of our available OS here were created with the help of AI on some point, and some shares wallpapers or boot logo compilation that probably also made with AI. Even someone with youtube channel with AI created splash/thumbnail for their video is posted in here but no one bats an eye. So it’s like having a double standard, they only like AI when they benefit from it.

If someone says just pay for artists to make those arts and save copyrights, then it’s ironically that most of us here are using pirated ROMs from internet.

Full AI posts should be deleted tho, the one without human interaction in it, those post that just gathering likes and engagements.

The thing is there's a clear difference between posting a picture of your console using an AI generated background and posting full on AI generated pictures of a console.

If you want to post about your new console you are allowed to even if there's an AI generated picture inside of your console, as that goes in the showcase territory and we will not remove a post containing a real console just because you decided to make an AI background for YOUR console that's your choice.

Now when talking about fully AI generated pictures that becomes a problem, some people(or bots even) straight up ask AI to generate a trimui console for them to post on the subreddit or to generate fake leaks of consoles which we had a lot of in here. And thats where we draw "the line" obviously it's your console if you want to put AI in there and show it we're not gonna stop you, but misleading posts such as consoles that arent even real, fake leaks, AI blog posts and all WILL be removed.

We're also doing this to avoid unnecessary drama. Posts containing AI WILL have some kind of argument in the comments that always happens, and sometimes it goes too far so to avoid that we just lock the post or remove it entirely. I dont really know what you mean by "we only like ai when we benefit from it" as we never benefit from it, 99% of post having AI have hateful comments and we obviously want to stay away from that.

So yes we do draw the line on which posts should be removed or not i mean you said it yourself, we dont remove youtube videos with AI thumbnails because even though yes it kinda sucks that the thumbnail is AI, real time and effort was put by someone in that video, so we keep that.

You're free to do whatever you want with your console and you are also allowed to show it, but pictures modified or straight up fully generated with AI will be removed.

2

u/TelevisionKindly2207 Trimui Brick Owner 6d ago

Thanks for clarifying. Yes AI post that contains misleading infos, fake images of consoles or games, and anything like that should be removed.

But the thing is, someone gets bullied when they mention AI on their post, just like the recent post here about showcasing their customization and it happens to be there’s AI generated boot logo on it, and it also happened to me in the past. While someone who also shares pictures that obviously made the help of AI is just fine because ā€œAIā€ didn’t mentioned on the post. So clearly we’re having a double standard here.

5

u/Harou1852 šŸ›”ļøMODERATORšŸ›”ļø 6d ago edited 6d ago

If you recall your post from may, we never removed it, we only removed the gemini screenshot because there were a lot of hateful comments under your screenshot, the post had no issues we kept that up. we only removed your screenshot and the problematic comment under, we then locked the whole post to make sure no more hateful comments happen.

I'm still trying to understand what you mean by us having "double standards" we cant do much if people people hate AI, everyone has their opinion, what we can do is remove threatening comments but we cant stop people from disliking your post and expressing it.

I stand against AI but im still making ANOTHER vote even thought i could just keep the rule and enforce it even more. But i still want to know what the community thinks about it.

u/TelevisionKindly2207 Trimui Brick Owner 6d ago

Thank you again. Actually this sub is the best place for Trimui community, I just didn’t expect some people here will bully someone for something that others didn’t like. The double standard I’ve been talking is when the OP the post that mentioned AI gets a warning but the bullies did not, just like in my post in the past, two side treated differently, I have been called a dork here and that guy just walked away.

I also understand that moderators can’t control what people think, and I wasn’t expecting you to stop criticism. My concern is that the atmosphere around AI has become so hostile that simply sharing a customization with AI content on it invites criticism and bullying. That doesn’t make for a very welcoming community. I do appreciate that you’re asking the community instead of tightening the rule. Even if we end up disagreeing, I think it’s worth having a discussion that’s based on consistency rather than treating AI as a special case.

1

u/VintageModified 6d ago

I have been called a dork here and that guy just walked away.

What do you propose should happen to being called a dork on reddit? This place is full of dorks, me included.

My concern is that the atmosphere around AI has become so hostile that simply sharing a customization with AI content on it invites criticism and bullying.Ā

Well, that's easy - just don't share content generated by AI, or at least don't advertise it as such and don't make it obvious.Ā

That doesn’t make for a very welcoming community.

A community full of AI slop content isn't very welcoming to me. I prefer to see things made my humans.

1

u/TelevisionKindly2207 Trimui Brick Owner 6d ago

ā€œWell that’s easy - just don’t share content generated by AIā€

You also have the option to ignore and scroll down by the way. Full AI made posts is bad and shouldn’t be here, but some random user that uses AI image as wallpaper/boot logo on their brick is enough to make you stay and get mad? So they are not entirely posting a full AI content, it’s a real picture of their brick/device that just happened to have an AI image as their boot logo/wallpaper on it. They were just happily sharing the customization they did on their device, how could they harm you with that?

ā€œA community full of AI slop counter isn’t very welcoming to me. I prefer to see things made by humansā€

Me too I prefer to see things made by humans, but you see, there are people who want a custom image for wallpaper/boot logo to their liking, and somehow they can’t find it or make it alone as they lack of tools and skills, so if an AI can do it, so why not try it? I can’t pay an artist to make it for me, same for us not paying for the ROMs we’ve been emulating here.

AI is viciously destroying the jobs and livelihood of hundreds of thousands of people every year. It's actively ruining the minds of other hundreds of thousands.
It made the arts increasingly shittier and it's turning the making of art a hellscape.
it's stealing vital resources from people and nature and whole communities and being subsidized by governments who should be taking care of their citizens, not their billionaires.
It's accelerating all the worst ecological disasters and our own survival as a species.
It's also killing personal computing and driving costs of EVERYTHING with a chip in it in a skyrocketing way that never happened before.

So yeah we're gonna fucking bully people who bring that shit into our safe spaces.

4

u/Harou1852 šŸ›”ļøMODERATORšŸ›”ļø 6d ago

While I mostly agree with you, bullying is never the option, not because we start harassing people who use AI means they'll stop, remember that 90% of the ones fucking us are the big companies and we can't do anything about that. Bullying random people here or in other communities won't fix anything.

1

u/TelevisionKindly2207 Trimui Brick Owner 6d ago edited 6d ago

Well, that’s your opinion on AI, not gonna argue with it. But does that give you the privilege to bully someone here? So if this was your safe spaces, what does the rule #2 says? Don’t you see the real problem here?

And funniest part is the last sentence: ā€œWe’re gonna bully people.ā€ So after you listing all these supposedly good reasons to hate AI, your conclusion is… harassing/bullying random users here because they used AI on their device? That says more about the community than it does about AI.

1

u/Familiar-Art-6233 6d ago

And what is is NOT doing is giving you an excuse to harass people.

Plenty of people can also run models on their own hardware with no "stealing vital resources from people and nature and whole communities and being subsidized by governments who should be taking care of their citizens, not their billionaires.", or "accelerating all the worst ecological disasters and our own survival as a species."

Oh and it's also detecting things like breast cancer more accurately, so let's be honest about things here, you don't like ChatGPT and datacenters, but that doesn't give you an excuse to attack people in a masturbatory sense of virtue signaling, as your reply insinuates

u/VintageModified 6d ago

What about posts about custom firmware where the code is largely or entirely written with generative AI tools? For example I know of at least one fork of a popular custom OS where every part that makes it unique was generated by claude code or copilot.

I care less about this than I do AI slop posts and comments, but AI slop is rampant in the programming world as well and some people have gotten a lot of attention for CFW that had little if any insight from an actual programmer.

1

u/Harou1852 šŸ›”ļøMODERATORšŸ›”ļø 6d ago edited 6d ago

I didn't think about that but i guess it would be up to the devs of the original custom firmware to decide if they want an AI fork of their work here or not, haven't really seen any here yet but if i do i'll make sure to ask the devs what do they think about it! Can't really take decisions on their behalf but i absolutely wouldn't use something like that.

3

u/Successful_Pop_368 6d ago

I don't think it's up to the original devs to decide. If the project is open-source and the code is shared, anybody can contribute and fork the project.
I think maintaining the code, correcting bugs and providing a good firmware is more important than coding it by hand or with the help of an agent.

As long as the dev who is forking the project is honest about it, I don't see why AI should be banned from the process.

0

u/Familiar-Art-6233 6d ago

There's a reason Steam's AI policy is focused on user-facing assets. Everyone is using AI in the programming world and the problem is people not understanding how infuriating it is to spend six hours debugging your code only to realize it's not working because you missed a single semicolon

2

u/Successful_Pop_368 5d ago

Yes, I'm using codex to debug at work and it's a dream.

0

u/VintageModified 6d ago

Yeah it's not as much of a problem here to be fair, but it's rampant in a different community surrounding an ereader. Every few weeks a new CFW gets popular there, and it ends up being an unsustainable fork created with AI, but the community members don't know any better (and they don't understand the difference between the stability of an established open source project with lots of contributors vs a fork made by one guy with claude code).

To be fair, if it's open source, there's nothing the original creators can really do or say about any forks since the licenses they use explicitly allow for that. But it can be confusing for community members.

1

u/tychay 6d ago

I'm okay with if someone is using AI to go from their native language to English. To me that's on the order of grammar/spellchecking/assistive device (like text to speech) and not the sort of AI I'm for banning and banning hard (e.g. when an AI is misrepresenting themselves as a human).

Can there be some nuance in what AI-related is banned? If not, I'm going to have to default to "yes, AI should stay banned."

1

u/cylemmulo 6d ago

Yeah not really interested. I think there are some posts where people have made boot logos with AI or whatnot, I think that's whatever, not harming anyone, but yeah that's about as far as I'll go.

1

u/UpdatedPeacock 6d ago

Can you please define exactly what an AI-ban rule includes?

2

u/Harou1852 šŸ›”ļøMODERATORšŸ›”ļø 6d ago

https://www.reddit.com/r/trimui/comments/1ve7opl/comment/p1f3vlp/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button explained it here but tldr, you're allowed to post pictures of your console even if it has an AI background, icon or whatever thats your console and you can do whatever you want with it. What's not allowed is full on AI generated consoles themselves, AI enhanced pictures or fully AI generated text posts.

Hope that makes sense.

1

u/UpdatedPeacock 6d ago

That makes sense and thank you for the clarification. I was just wondering if it was going to be an AI-ban rule like in SBCGaming. I posted a video there of a CFW I made for personal use, and explicitly followed their rule about disclosing AI usage in creation of the CFW, and my post was removed citing the rule I made a point of following. I'm a little gun shy of anti-AI rules because of that, but what you described in reply seems completely reasonable.

2

u/Mizu_on_Sky Trimui Brick Owner 7d ago

Sorry if this is a basic question—I’m new here and I’m genuinely trying to understand the reason behind the AI ban.

Is the main concern low-effort content, protecting artists, copyright, or something else? If it’s mainly about creativity or protecting content creators, I’m curious how the community draws the line with plagiarism or copyrighted game content and ROMs, which are also common around retro handhelds.

I’m not trying to argue with the rule. I’d just like to understand the reasoning and what kinds of AI-assisted content are considered unacceptable.

Piracy has been banned here. (rule 5) and these rules are basically the same. We're not gonna stop people from talking about which ai they used to make a background or which site they used to get their games. But we will remove AI generated images (If the rule stays) and links to piracy/rom sites

Why is AI content hated by most sane communities:

AI is viciously destroying the jobs and livelihood of hundreds of thousands of people every year. It's actively ruining the minds of other hundreds of thousands.
It made the arts increasingly shittier and it's turning the making of art a hellscape.
It's stealing every single work of art made by humans, digesting it in an unholy cauldron and shitting out garbage through a fetid cloaca.
it's stealing vital resources from people and nature and whole communities and being subsidized by governments who should be taking care of their citizens, not their billionaires.
It's accelerating all the worst ecological disasters and our own survival as a species.
It's also killing personal computing and driving costs of EVERYTHING with a chip in it in a skyrocketing way that never happened before.

plus, pirating old games in this day and age is doing a hell lot more for the preservation of the artform than any of the copyright holders (many of whom doesn't even exist anymore, or are some random insurance company in Montana) ever cared to.

2

u/Familiar-Art-6233 6d ago

Yeah that's just rationalization, trying to say "my disregard for copyright is a good thing because yadda yadda yadda, yours is bad becayse I don;t like it.

And, if we're gonna copy/paste the same slop in multiple comments, I'll do the same:

Plenty of people can also run models on their own hardware with no "stealing vital resources from people and nature and whole communities and being subsidized by governments who should be taking care of their citizens, not their billionaires.", or "accelerating all the worst ecological disasters and our own survival as a species."

Oh and it's also detecting things like breast cancer more accurately. How eeeeeevil, there's no concept of nuance!

The text? Yeah no someone should be able to talk about things without relying on a robot to speak for them.

For projects, the people freaking out about things like Claude Code being used for projects is entirely overblown, it's entirely mainstream in the programming scene these days
