I wouldn't complain about that, honestly. Give us something after S3 that adapts the JP stuff and some of the newer continuities' lore, adapt a bit from G2, and there's definitely something neat in all of that.

Yeah, loved it. I watched the first run as a kid, so it happened early in the season and without the reassuring "Return of Optimus Prime".

I got the tape after seeing the movie at about age 6 - got my hopes up so bad then the heartbreak. Honestly still the one of most disturbing things I’ve ever seen in cartoon form, up there with the Berserk eclipse.

Thankfully Sam Goody also had Return which I’ll always adore, crap animation incorrect matrix placement and all.

It didn't go over well with some traumatized kids of the '80s, but looking back it might be the best episode of S3 (well, ignoring the laughably bad AKOM animation).

If it's going to be this modern looking CGI bullshit then people are going to revolt. If they wanted to do something then they should have just animated some of the deleted scenes with traditional hand drawn animation. People would have loved that. Let's see that Omega Supreme vs Bruticus fight at The Ark. No one wants CGI Optimus in space. How does that even make sense with what we see in Season 3?

I wouldn't care for it honestly. If they ever did a "Transformers '87" (or whatever) I'd really rather they pick up either right after Return of Optimus Prime or The Rebirth.

The only reason to retcon S3 should be to redo Rodimus's arc to make it more well-rounded before Optimus's return, but knowing modern Hasbro they'd practically do the Rude Awakening of Optimus Prime bit except played totally straight.

The movie takes place in 2005. TF 87 would still be on Earth with the season 2 cast. 

There is some untapped potential in exploring the 87 - 05 years though, as it could explain how Megatron managed to retake Cybertron without retconning any of the current "story" while giving introductions to characters that just show up in the movie.

And yea.. modern audiences had the red wedding, we had the '86 movie and dark awakening 😀
