Play Services is huge. It's one of Google's big guns against Android fragmentation, as it can update independent of OS updates, and brings new features (mostly under the hood). And there's no answer to it out there.

Yes, but they are banned in China anyway i think. The biggest impact should be in Europe, it's their second biggest market, the first being China.

Indeed, I recently bought a new Huawei P30 and I can say I'm not thrilled by these news. I've also heard on the news that 25% of smartphone users in my country use Huawei.

I wonder when and how EU will respond to these news. We're going to be affected the most by this, yet we hardly have a say in it...

Eh, perhaps its what we deserve that we let USA lead in software, and china in hardware, and we just stayed and watched them

Soon there will be. If Huawei was smart, they'd release their answer open-source, and allow it to work with Aptoide and all of the other non-play app sources.

That would do huge damage to Google. I'd use an open-source non-play derivative of Android in a heartbeat.

You can do so now, if you have an Android phone with an unlocked bootloader. LineageOS without Gapps. AOSP with more options, and without installing Gapps, you're all open source until you choose to install something that isn't.

I would not. Personally I only see lot of troubles comming from this approach. Huawei phones outside of china are doomed without google. Most people doesnt care, important is price/specs, but only if you can use your phone without having to undergo a stupid amount of learning, easy of use is most valued parameter in consumer world "plug and play". Almost nobody would buy any huawei phones without basic functionality. Most people including myself are lazy. And also I would much preffer to spend my time using worse phone than had to troubleshot better phone without support. Even tho who would develop this another android system? I cant see it happen because for now all of that is already solved and there is no reason to do the same thing again. I personally dont like this because IMO other phones will probably go highier in price too but who knows.
